Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

This thread is putting the s***s into me - that new toy smell that I love is going to kill me and my rubber figures are going to disintegrate unless I put them in airtight cases.

Presumably cigarrette smoke will cause them all sorts of harm too. I allow my g/f to smoke in the bedroom otherwise I'd never get her alone but with this in mind I'm putting my rubber figures in cardboard boxes encased in bubble wrap for the time being....unless that too will be harmful?

Hip joints!!!??? Well that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. The design of this Alien is not conducive to having those horrible looking hip joints. Unacceptable.

It's Sideshow's 1/4 scale Maquette next year or nothing. Just hope it wipes its ass with NECA for the amount of money they will be asking for it. Hmmm, $50 or $900. Tough call.

:horror:horror Hip Joints! :horror:horror Are you serious? Please by all that is good, tell me that's not true!

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Oh noes, you mean this action figure is going to have HIP JOINTS???????????!?!?!?!?!?!?!!

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Got me, guess the ALIEN was never intended to move his hips.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Noooooo!!!!!!!!!! Anything but hip joints!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But seriously, is windex bad?

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

If it has alcohol in it, it can be.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I think Windex with a little lime tastes good.

Don't wrap them with bubblewrap, as the figure can't 'breathe'. Just put them in their box and they'd be fine.

Damn, you put em in a smoking room? remind me not to buy anything from you dude :lol

I put my collectibles in my room, so there's a smoke free policy from my wife. And inside the display case, I put a dehumidifier at the bottom of the shelf, and on each shelf (total of 4), I put 2 silica gel (those you get from buying shoes/crackers) just to be sure. I put the display case at the corner where its farthest away from the window/sunlight. So far there's nothing wrong with my figures, except for a bit of a dust.

Just from cleaning the surrounding glass, such as the levels and the inside of the door?
It's not as if I windex the case while the figures are standing around in it. No spray physically touches them, and I merely return them right after windexing the inside of the case. After doing this a couple of times in the last couple months, I became concerned over possible airborne compounds, such as the ammonia d, left behind by the windex, and causing damage. Does this sound like a legit worry? Or would you think the ammount of chemicals possibly left in the air by windex inside an enclosed case to be too thin to damage paint, plastic, or rubber?

I wouldn't worry about it man, if you aren't spraying it directly on the figs they should be fine. Their just objects to enjoy, no stress or worry should be involved in this game, in my opinion. Just go as far as you're happy with to care for them.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Harmful chemicals in most of these household stuff is low enough to not cause any hard to our figs. If they can damage high quality rubber, plastic and other materials, I don't think it would be legal for them to be sold. Like what Leaves said, without direct contact, I wouldn't worry about it much.

Well the reason I'm not simply putting them back into their respective boxes is as a space saver. Their actual boxes will be going into storage but I don't want to put the figures themselves into storage too. By putting a few figures wrapped in bubblewrap together into 1 cardboard box (and then as many cardboard boxes of figures as I end up with) I'll be bringing fewer boxes with me to the rented house than I would be if each figure was in its own individual box. Our own house will be undergoing extensive renovation, thats why I'm in the regretable position of having to put stuff in storage in the first place.

As to the smoking, its bothersome, stinks up the room and I've recently become increasingly paranoid about its effects on my figures, the rubber ones particularly and the ones with white items of clothing. I saw the effects of intense cigarette smoke on some of my expendable mcfarlane figures that I once left in my brothers room - a residual cigarette smell and major discolouration, particularly on formerly white parts. This is why I really want glass panelled doors on the shelves that I'll be getting built in when the house is done.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

personally, i'd be more worried about what cigarette smoke does to me than the figures.
but yeah, glass cabinets aren't expensive. i got a nice used one for $50 and it fits almost my entire collection.

also, it's true that it'll be a pain to try to resell anything that reeks of smoke. good luck with that.

You should be very concerned if you plan on keeping your figures "new" indefinitely. Smoke is one of the worst things you can do for your figures in the long term. Smoke condenses on the figure, becomes sticky and attracts airborne contaminants like moulds etc. The residue will also permanently taint raw "rubber" and paints. There are so many combinations of chemicals in smoke that it's hard to determine any one effect from them -- all of them are bad over time.

Everything is a poison -- it's the dose that makes the poison.

Using Windex to clean you cabinets is fine, just make sure it has completely evaporated before you return your figs. I personaly use isopropyl alcohol.

Hey I just got one of the Detolfs from Ikea, is there a way to seal the sides of the door to keep dust out? what do you use?

Get some high quality 1" wide clear tape. If you want to get hardcore; get some non acidic silicone and run a bead around all the rebates for the glass before you assemble them. Run strips of the tape over all of the rear vertical joins/seams when you've assembled them, and you've got yourself a cabinet that's good enough to store your figs for a very long time. You can't even notice the tape when it's on. A few cent's of tape on a Detolf will help to preserve your figs in top condition. The tape residue is easily removed with a clean rag and windex, but you only really get a visible build-up after you remove the tape from the door a few times. Experiment a little and you'll get the hang of the tape thing pretty quickly. I can't recommend this process highly enough. Near museum/archival grade storage in your own home -without the expense.

I'm sorry?
