Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I think I need to ban the smoking in my room. I can't even open the bedroom window, its so old that its sealed shut. The only thing I can say is I have a decent sized bedroom and I keep any figures that aren't boxed up as far away as they can be from my g/f's smoke. Still though, I'm in the room and it can't be doing me any good when I can't even open the damned window.

I'll definitely be buying this one. He will most likely be the only 1/6 A|L|I|E|N xenomorph in my collection, which happens to represent my second favorite film in the series (yeah, James Cameron's edges out Ridley Scott's for sheer awesomeness IMO). He should go great with Dallas and Kane. What's the story behind the name "Big Chap"?

Aliens was better when it was Starship Troopers. i think it was the most boring movie in the whole series.

that's just what the crew called it on the set. Brits aren't great with nicknames.

Just so I'm clear, so you think Aliens was the superior movie, and Alien was the most boring? Not flaming you, but just wanted to be sure I understood you right. ;)

I actually never saw Alien as a young kid. As an R rated horror movie my parents never allowed me to watch it, even though most of my friends had seen it and thought it was one of the most horrifying movies they'd ever seen. It wasn't until my pre-teen years back in 1987 when I first saw Aliens at a movie theater with a group of friends for the first time. I thought it was awesome and horrifying at the same time. The film left a lasting impression on me (as well as Predator), and I've been a fan of the franchise since. I finally got to see the original Alien at some point in the late 80s. I didn't think it was boring so to speak, but it certainly didn't move at the pace of Aliens. However, I was very intrigued by the characters, dialogue, acting, cinematography and general atmosphere of the first film. I thought it was superb film making as a whole, and actually made me appreciate my first love Aliens even more since I now knew the backstory. It instantly became one of my favorite sci-fi movies. And though a lot of people didn't like it, I really enjoyed Alien 3 as well. I felt the films should have ended at that point, as the series came full circle and had such an emotional ending. It wasn't until Alien: Resurrection did I feel the franchise was taking a nose dive and started spinning out of control. :monkey2

I see. Thanks. :)

You could always buy an air purifier. Get a razor knife and cut around the frame of the window, that might be enough to get it open. :monkey4

nuh-uh. other way around.
Alien was ground-breaking science fiction. it focused on artistic style and atmosphere.
Aliens was just more juvenile action movie fluff in comparison.

hmm. that sounds like nostalgia talking. i liked Aliens when i was a kid too. now, i'm over it.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I remember I first saw Alien when it was on video, I was 7 or 8 at the time and it scared me to death, I couldn't even watch the whole thing. Then later on I saw Ghostbusters for the first time, and when i saw Sigourney's face I actually started crying hysterically, cause I associated her with the Alien so much, I thought it was gonna show up any second:lol I couldn't separate the two films in my mind even tho my mom told me it was a different movie, I didn't believe it.:duh

Artistic style and atmosphere is all very well but Cameron couldn't simply copy that. Either he could have left it alone completely and not made a sequel or he could have done what he did - and what he did was the most logical next step both in our real world and in the context of the Alien universe.

the "logic" can be argued with here, but in the context of the original, Aliens is a lousy sequel.
it's like if someone made a sequel to 2001 that was all about marines shooting and blowing up monoliths.

Cutting down Aliens? Give me a break. I'm old enough to have seen both films in the theater. Aliens is the best follow up ever. Most that are old enough that saw both know Aliens went belond Alien. Both movies work perfect with each other. Nobody could have made the secound Alien movie better than what Cameron pulled off. They should have ended the Ripley story right there. I have fun now days showing both Alien and Aliens to younger people and seeing how they react. Most of the times Aliens gets the heart pumping even more than Alien does. Alien 3 on the other hand seems to make them ticked and should never have been made.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

i hope you're not trying to convince me that Cameron could make a better second Alien movie than Ridley Scott could.
and of course a younger audience likes Aliens more. that's who it was made for.
Alien 3 was much closer to the original and at least it got rid of that annoying kid.

You guys are never going to agree... Everyone has different tastes... There are no rules.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

it's not about agreeing it's about looking cool on the internet!!!

oh, tankman, aren't you the guy who sculpted the NECA big chap? please make that thing in 1:6 so we won't have to drop $150 on this turd.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Like I said, Alien was a fantastic film, and was certainly ahead of it's time IMO. It remains one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies to date. But I would hardly consider Aliens to be mere "action movie fluff".

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I got to go with Alien over Aliens.

It's just a better film. IMO

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Quality-wise, I'd say Alien is pretty much perfect while Aliens is just slightly behind. They're both great films in very different ways.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

alien is a classic because of its amazing design (from the creature to the whole "used future" production design) and depth of groundbreaking ideas---the biology & lifecycle of the alien, the gritty, blue-collar characterization in a futuristic space-movie genre, as opposed to the squeeky-clean, high-brow feel that was common during that era, ala star trek. and it was essentially a serious, mature "haunted house" movie in space.

aliens was different because cameron was smart enough to know ridley scott's approach could never be topped. so he consciously set out to expand the universe and establish a fresh tonality. it is essentially a war movie in space. and cameron did that exceptionally well. if alien was all about slow-burning dread, aliens was all about adrenaline.

but more so than that, it had a very strong underlying theme about motherhood and what a parent would go thru to protect its offspring. this applied to both ripley as well as the alien queen.

any sequel that injects new ideas and material into the pre-established stuff in the first film is a successful sequel, imo. i don't see how anyone can simply label aliens nothing more than a mindless shoot-em up.

they're both very different films and each stands on its own merits.
