Don't mean to stir any pots, but as a maker of things, I'm trying to work out the actual cost to make a cape:
1. Research (time spent).
2. Accurate pattern drafting and cutting.
3. Materials sourcing -- either time spent or cost of travel.
4. Travel time/cost or shipping cost to obtain material. (see above)
5. Cost of material and any consumables (i.e. thread?).
6. Prototyping.
7. Labour for finished product. (Accurate cuts -- plus is there stitching involved?)
Low volume sales make low cost production unprofitable.
Fifty to sixty bucks
does sound steep for a piece of cloth, but it's a niche product for your niche product that someone has to make by hand.
Were I in the same position as Mr. Meis, I probably wouldn't bother doing it for less.
I agree that it's expensive, but I can't see why anyone would make and sell these for less.
