Exactly. I don't like the prequels, but I like certain elements of it.

To distance itself from the prequels doesn't mean to negate their existence or their plot. You could consider, for instance, the prequels as "bad movies" from a period of Star Wars history.

My sentiments also. Even if you felt the prequels were "bad" movies (which I don't), they did their purpose in explaining how Darth Vader came to be Darth Vader. They also do a good job at depicting what the Jedi look like at their pinnacle. The lightsaber duels were great.

I still love the prequels. And i can forgive Jar Jar because they used him in the same way(And with a lot better results), in the Clone Wars show(Bombad Jedi is close to a perfect Jar-Jar episode).
What i can never understand is why people criticised the designs and starships in the prequels. The height of the republic was supposed to be a pinnacle of style and technology. Vehicles, buildings and clothing of a time when people were in a free society able to do what they wanted, making starships of such rarity that some were one of a kind craft. Cut to twenty years later and they were in the equivalent of communist russia just before the collapse of the wall. Designs were blocky and utilitarian, using less refined components and mass produced with cost in mind.
It's like taking a 70's design:

And complaining that the design from twenty years before isn't realistic because it looks so much nicer than the one that came later.

By having Ewan McGregor's voice in Rey's flashback, they're acknowledging the existence of the prequels.
Have to disagree with you there. By having Ewan McGregor's voice they are only acknowledging that Sir Guiness isn't alive to do the lines himself.

How are they suppose to go out of their way to acknowledge the prequels? Going off what Rey said, the younger folk thought Jedi were nothing but stories, and the only ones old enough to remember the Clone Wars are Chewie and Maz. They would have no reason to talk about that.

Chewie was too busy being a wuss, and Maz wasn't saying much at all due to her confidentiality clause with Disney so as not to spoil VIII and IX.

Actually, they edited one of Alec Guiness line to make him say Rey and used McGregor to say a line that Guiness had already said in the OT (which means that they could have done it without McGregor completely, if they wanted).

It's on one recent Ewan McGregor interview.

:exactly: They edited Rey out of Guiness saying afraid.

That's what I thought also. I thought there were lines in the film that were spoken both by Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan ("Now you've taken your first steps") and by Alec's Obi-Wan. If they didn't want to acknowledge the existence prequels in any way, I would imagine that they wouldn't bother to include Ewan's voice.

I don't know why they would actively try and forget about the prequels to begin with. No need to go out of your way to refer to them, but no need to actively avoid them also. Like them or not, I feel they're just as much a part of the SW Universe as the OT.

Ugh, I want this to hurry up and come out already. Kylo is getting lonely!
Yip. I agree! I hope she comes out as scheduled too! Although it gives me time to make my custom bases! [emoji6] [emoji106]

Alec's actual line was "You've taken your first step into a larger world."

But had they lifted that line in it's entirety will all of its inflection and shape intact, everyone of us would have instantly recognized it and assumed that it was nothing more than a flashback to this very scene, with no implication or import specific to Rey, and would have thus lost all of the intended impact.

The visuals are probably the aspect of the prequels that gets criticised the least. But for those who think they're too different to those of the OT, Lucas purposely did that for the exact reason you say.

Depending how the rest of the NT pans out, the prequels may continue to stand apart from all the other films in tone and style, representing a mythical, "more civilised age".

Precisely. Haters may ignore them if they wish, but they're still the official Episodes I-III.

Honestly your telling me there isn't a voice actor on the entire planet that couldn't have delivered the same line and sounded like Sir Guiness or simply chosen not to have the line in the movie?
There's no other reason why Ewan McGregor was asked to record the line other than the fact that he is the actor that played Kenobi in the prequels...why would lucasfilm ask Ewan to do this for another other reason?

They called McGregor in because they wanted him. He didn't go to them, they asked him to do it.

Heck, Mark Hamill is great with voices. He probably could have imitated Sir Guinness well enough to do one line.

Within reason.
I can always tell it's him, lol. Every time he tries an accent with received pronunciation, it just sounds like Joker.
Not trying to put him down.
He's great at everything else, but his stock British accent always sounds like Joker to me.

One of the things they tried to avoid from prequels was midichlorians. It was definitely a concept I was never keen on. I loved all the mystery surrounding the Jedi and their powers. Then suddenly it just depends how much bacteria you have... I also thought there were far too many Jedi in the prequels. But just my opinion. I think prequels are always difficult for long time fans of something because they will already have an image in their head of what things should be like and when it doesn't match it's upsetting.

That stuff never bothered me in the prequels, although I agree it didnt need to be in them. I was more bothered by TFA not having much actual Star Wars stuff than the prequels getting into details about how the force works. TFA has no Jedi, no Sith, no Darth's, no exotic planets (they were all places that look mostly like Earth), no crazy ships we've never seen before... its not really a Star Wars movie. Its more like those 2 new Star Trek movies JJ did (which I liked a lot btw), with the Falcon replacing the Enterprise, and some other SW stuff sprinkled in here and there, but it felt nothing like SW to me. I love TFA, but for me personally, its hardly a SW movie, and im ok with that.

George didnt make this movie. Had nothing to do with it, so naturally its not going to FEEL like Georges work. This is like trying to find a new lead singer for Led Zeppelin or whatever. Sure they could find someone to do a good enough job, but it will never feel exactly like Zep without Robert Plant. I dont believe SW will ever feel like SW again. Not for me anyway. They will always feel more like cover bands. Some are really good, but not the same thing. And TFA is very good, but its not the same thing. Its someone elses interpretation of SW, not actually George Lucas' SW, that he created and is more intimately familiar with than anyone else.

Every time I see TFA, which is like 7 or 8x now, every single second I feel George missing from the project. Even the opening shot with the stormtroopers in the lander. The way its edited, the way it looks, its so finely polished like those 2 star trek movies, so it looks like them to me, and not like SW bc SW never looked like that. I feel JJ's style in every frame, and feel none of George's. I dont know if thats good or bad. Its just unsettling for me. Thats all.
