I agree but... RT also placed the Variety and CNN reviews - which were most definitely negative (go ahead and read them) - into the "fresh" column under "top critics", so it kinda goes both ways though.

I never said that RT critic scores were worth much either. I mean, the whole site is kind of just... eh. I mean, their somewhat arbitrary decisions about what is fresh or not points to the general not-great-ness of the site in general.

And I'd argue (if you actually look at news articles around Christmas) that media coverage was actually the reverse - it was dubious of the RT user score and called it a conspiracy, or a small disgruntled group. The media didn't buy it at all - initially, until it became clearer that the backlash was bigger than expected.

It doesn't matter if the news reports took it seriously or not. My point was that they publicized the RT score as something a disgruntled fan could express their opinion on, thus fueling more people to go to it.

And finally, the facts:

AOTC made over $1B in adjusted dollars worldwide.
AOTC received an A- from Cinemascore

And no, you won't find those facts in any media story out there.

So, yes, general audiences didn't hate AOTC, and it made money. Look, I'm not trying to convince you to like TLJ. I'm just saying it's making money, and it seems to be generally liked. I think AOTC is a pretty crap movie, but there are people who like it, too.

:exactly:

I'm no fan of AOTC, and RT is transitioning to a content provider, so is probably best wholly ignored. I'm not sure enough "savvy" people were seeing media coverage and going to that site to do "one-off" reviews. If you're talking hundreds of reviews (like yelp or something where people hate on a cafe for something they said or did,) I can buy it, but not 170,000 reviews (note: most of those have short reviews, not just star scores.) That takes bots, and you can do checks to prove or disprove bot activity (one the tests being the same written review posted dozens/hundreds of times) which they did - but yeah, who knows if you can trust RT?

The bottom line is RT have good reason to put negative reviews into the positive column (which is a major no-no, but they did it with TLJ) because they are looking to appease Disney going forward.

MY overall point is that fans of TLJ point to a billion gross, Cinemascore and RT as objective "proof" that the backlash is some tiny group, but all I'm saying is that all of that "proof" is as dubious as the user ratings on RT.

general audiences....? when did that become a good thing? Isn't that the same thing as "lowest common denominator"? Isn't that what most of us always say is why they make bad movies? Yet now its a good Star Wars because it plays to "general audiences".

Who writes this stuff?:slap:lol

I honestly hate all the real world stuff they add in (despite my comment about new things being weaponized in TLJ movie thread :lol). In Rebels they have that character Sabine with the Mandallorian mask and she has pink died hair and does graffiti art. So dumb.

Is a new phasma a sure thing? I know there was a preview of sorts but a lot of that stuff never sees daylight. If it is made maybe they will have a buy the new phasma, get the old phasma free sale.

It looks more likely going by this:

Star Wars has always played to general audiences, It's why they are big hits. Did you think Disney paid $4b for some little cult niche movies? :dunno

That site is a total joke. All the prequels got A’s. Can’t believe anyone cites that place.
Thing is, from what I can tell, they are probably the most valid source of actual movie goer opinion, because there is sampling and surveying of a sort. Not just a self selected group who is motivated to post opinions online. And that's depressing.

That comment sounds like it came from the teacher's staff room in Pink Floyd's the Wall music video.

Duly noted.:lecture

:lol

The problem with so much of the Wookiepedia (or whatever its called) stuff is it seems really amateurishly written and uncreative. Maybe it's the "edited by regular peeps" issue, and verifying sources only ensures it's factually correct, not that it's engagingly strung together in real sentences or garnished with fan Velveeta.

But 400 people or less to represent a national opinion snapshot just seems kinda low to me. Studios like it because it's usually positive (unless the movie's a disaster like F4 obviously) and has a "grade" that's easy to cite like Ebert's thumbs thing.

It took big balls to put a character like Holdo into SW.

She actually looks like my doctor. No kidding.:horror:lol

From what I understand they only poll 400 people and only on opening night. Anybody going to a movie on opening night probably is specifically interested in that particular film and is unlikely to give a harsh grade. I just read a bit on it and only 19 movies have ever received an F.

I definitely did not want to hate TLJ but I do.
