It's not to take anything from the figure, but when the chips are down, you have to pick what you want the most, and if you're pinching pennies then I'd pass. If you have cash laying around then you can't beat the price!
Just my 2 cents...
And that's exactly how I thought of it when I bought this figure. Sure there are plenty of other nice figures coming out, but ion the end, when it comes to HT, just about all their figures are nice figures. How does one choose out of so much to offer? It really just depends on the collector. I don't think it has so much to do with having or not having money when compared to a collector's individual wants.
Yea you can dumb it down (not trying to offend btw) and say "it's just an old man in a robe," but to me, he's Kevin Flynn, the Creator, the User of all Users
I honestly don't find this figure boring in the least bit
I honestly think if you had the light cycle to go with it then the figure becomes cooler, but by itself on display it isn't all that tied to TRON. It needs a cooler stand or something. A light up hood. I dunno. It just needs...something more.
I totally get what you mean, because I was planning the way it was going to be displayed in my head back when I was deciding whether I should get it or not. And when I did put the order through, I went and ordered one of those light-up identity discs to use as a back-drop straight away.
I absolutely didn't mean to offend anyone. It's a sweet figure. I also see the value in it, but I think a lot of people just see him as this boring figure, and it sells it short. Congrats definitely a good price there!Grabbed him from FPNYC, for that price it was super hard to resist. I can see how he might not be the most exciting figure to some, but I enjoyed it enough that he's definitely worth it.
For me this was a must have figure because of my connection to Tron.
I saw the original film on opening weekend when I was eight years old. I was dying for an Atari 2600, which we did get by the end of that year and anything involving video games and computers seemed really exciting and exotic.
I can remember learning about Tron a couple of months before it came out when we were on a vacation and my mom's cousin had an Omni magazine with an article about it on is coffee table. I couldn't keep my eyes off the pictures. When the movie came out, I don't think my mom was in a super big hurry to take us but a friend came by and asked if my little brother and I wanted to go see it with him.
We jumped at the chance and were completely blown away. We talked about it constantly and took paper plates and drew blue rings on them and threw them at each other that summer. When I had gotten my first DVD player years later Tron was the very first DVD I bought.
But, I realize that that's not everyone's experience. Heck mentioning Omni magazine and the Atari 2600 makes me feel a bit old compared to some of you guys. I can totally understand people without feelings of nostalgia about Tron would say, the figure is an old guy in a robe. I really love the figure but I think what is frustrating about the figure is I think it would be more valuable to a lot of collectors if we know it would have others to complement him. Some figures are just fine standing there by themselves, but I think he'd pop more with a Clu, Quorra or a regular issue Sam. What I'd really love but I don't believe it would ever happen would be to display him with a 1982 version Flynn.
This figure is only $104 at Forbidden Planet NYC.

Good luck!
"Old man in robe" doll is accurate only because the sculptors didn't quite capture Kevin Flynn's true likeness from the film. It's a good sculpt when looking at Sideshow's early days but from what we expect Hot Toys to deliver, it's a bit off to be spending that much.
