the suit was powered by the arc reactor, not his heart. the same reactor was keeping shards of metal from entering his heart and killing him. the reactor and the shards of metal were a burden and at one time almost killed tony before a redesign. with the stable formula extremis, pepper was returned to normal and tony was able to live through the surgery he previously would not have been able to. removing the shards was something he had wanted to do since IM1. so what was wrong with that? you'd rather see him carry that burden? seems to me IM3 was about tony facing his demons and winning out over them.

That pretty much nails it. :goodpost:

I think the Air Force One rescue scene was epic and superbly done..just wish Tony was in the suit..and not his fly-apart-on slight-tap empty suit

I revise my US Box Office total for IM3.....380 million

It was great but at one point the people look like they where hanging with wires over the water.

looked weird.

I wonder what all that means for Avengers 2. I said it before that Iron Man 3 would have been great as an end to his story, but there still a lot of ground to cover with Avengers 2 and 3. I feel is way to early for all these radical changes. I almost get a feeling that Tony is retiring for good. He doesn't have an arc reactor anymore, he lost his lab, he destroyed all his armors and said there won't be anymore "distractions" (meaning he won't be making more suits)... so like, what happens now?

I liked the movie, thought it was better than IM2, but still far short of IM1. My only real gripe was the brittle nature of the suits. I can buy into the logic that they were poorly made distractions, etc. but that doesn't make the fact that the function most used by Tony in the end battle was the "EJECT" command...sit any better with me.

Deckard has also swayed me on the Arc reactor, it didn't bother me at first, but it really was the only part of him (physically) that was unique, and it was a pretty elegant way to "connect" him to his armors.

I'm not sure if this was discussed yet, but did anyone else pick up on Happy's Vincent Vega tribute? :lol That made the "Pulp" style end credits that much more awesome.

Yup, I actually posted about it in the RM Vincent thread. From the Bolo tie to the hair; just pure winning.

So because of this new, improved Extremis, Tony has real super powers now? I would've rather had them say a wizard removed the shrapnel from his chest.

Apparently no he put it in himself long enough to somehow survive the surgery to remove shrapnel from his heart and than removed it? I don't really understand and frankly I don't think anyone can give a straight answer on that right now. Maybe it's still in him and somehow will power the suit even though that makes little sense given what the virus does in the movie. What we do know is he should essentially have a hole in his chest the size of a woman's fist which seems a bit dangerous but on the plus side it could make for a pretty nifty fish tank.

But yea, so far as I can tell no powers, now he's Justin Hammer, he makes drones that fall apart and bangs Christine. Next time a god pokes him in the chest it's gonna tickle.

The temporary Extremis would've repaired his gaping chest sphincter, right?

Again, that's not entirely clear but one would certainly hope they closed it up somehow so he doesn't have a death star trench right to his life button.

Alot of little details like that. Going again Friday to pick up on the stuff I missed first go round.

I think some people might be taking the exploding armors too literally. I kind of thought it was more symbolic. Not that Iron Man is a distraction, but that those particular armors (done during his post-Avengers anxiety phase) were a distraction during that time. They represented all the trouble he and Pepper had. So, since he's mega-rich and can build many, many more... he destroyed them in a grand showing for Pepper's benefit.

I don't even think SHE thinks he's done as Iron Man. Remember, she says (after she has Extremis) that she understands why he can't leave the armor. "Now what am I going to complain about?" she says - fully realizing that Tony isn't giving up the armor. True, that happens before the armors explode... but I think Pepper knows Tony too well to believe that's the end of Iron Man. I don't thinks she WANTS that to be the end of Iron Man.

I posted this in the Iron Patriot thread, but part of me wonders if IP won't join the Avengers, get in trouble, and lead to Tony taking up the mantle of Iron Man again. I do feel like, in some way, Avengers 2 might involve Tony suiting up again after some time off. He'll have been working on Mark 43 or something post IM3. It'll be odd if he just walks in and is Iron Man again after the end of this movie.

Ifi remember correctly the extermis helps work with the suit right before the bleeding edge armor and then they develop that off the extermis stuff.
