Mandarin never struck me as particularly aged looking when I read the comics.

If RDJ asks for more $$$, I can see Feige waving goodbye.

Without the critical success of IM1 and then the financial success of IM2 Feige must realise that RDJ is a major reason for the success of Avengers. I'd actually bet it might not even have happened if it were not for RDJ's portrayal of Tony Stark. Pay the man and keep him on board.

I know Marvel Studios is notorious for penny pinching. I don't think that's a BAD thing. More studios should be more fiscally responsible, honestly. They are making movies that should never cost 100s of millions of dollars (like rom coms) because they are letting budgets and salaries get out of control.

However, with RDJ they know he's a lynchpin in this universe. They were more than willing to give him a nice back-end deal for IM2 and Avengers, and I'm willing to bet they'll pony up some more money plus a back-end to keep him on board as long as possible.

:exactly: so far he's the main star of Marvel Cinematic Universe. They can't let him go.

I could do without another Iron Man film ever being made as long as it guaranteed RDJ appearing in future Avengers films.

Does Whedon have any sort of creative rights now over the other movies?

Not one bit. With The Avengers he was given an outline of how the other films connected and then was allowed to write from there. Now Thor 2, Iron Man 3 and if the upcoming Ant-Man ever gets off of the ground will be stand alones but Captain America 2 will be a direct "sequel" to both the first film and The Avengers so Whedon if hired on to do The Avengers 2 would basically look at whatever occurred in CA2 as the template to continue forward since the rest would be independent.

And is this suit just a stepping stone to whatever happens with Iron man in Avengers 2?

This suit(s), I still think they'll be more than one suit in this, will be the last outing of Stark before The Avengers 2 but I guarantee you they'll be new suits in that too even if they are adjustments to whatever is in here.

It is an interesting question. Favreau seems to have had a little bit of hand in things here or there since Iron Man as it was the most successful movie before Avengers.

He didn't, Kevin Feige oversaw the entire thing and kept the directors talking that had to but other than that kept them independent. He had say in IM and IM2 obviously and had a few bits over the initial draftings and ideas of The Avengers but Whedon took that and ran with it independently of off Zak Penn's script for the most part. Favreau was supposed to produce The Avengers but seeing as he didn't get a credit, I would imagine that he wasn't involved at all. He will produce IM3 but he has even said that Black is running everything on his own and he is simply there to help here he can.

Just reading this months Empire and Feige confirmed this was the last movie of RDJ contract but he expects him to be in future outings. Was there rumours that Feige would be happy to see RDJ gone?

Feige publicly said that RDJ was great for them, made movies for them but eventually will be gone and they'll "James Bond" the Stark role and continue forward. He mentioned that he'd like RDJ to continue with them past IM3 but that if he didn't then they'd find someone to step in.

Feige was under a lot of heat for dumping Norton in Act 1 of the Avengers Assemble project and if Ruffalo had sucked for example he'd have taken the blame fully but since Ruffalo not only worked out but IMHO outdid all those who came before it's given Feige a bit of cred and even made him a bit arrogant in interviews when it comes to actors in the Marvel Film U. He'd happily show RDJ the door if they came to butting heads without fail as he has that kind of complex going on from anytime someone talks to him about casting.

I could do without another Iron Man film ever being made as long as it guaranteed RDJ appearing in future Avengers films.

Ironically when Favreau left, there was talk that they'd stop it at IM2 and save RDJ's last contractual for The Avengers sequel but obviously that didn't happen. It could have though.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what you're saying is contradicting anything I said? :)

They talked to each other when they had to... that is called collaboration. I also said Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios had the strongest hand. I'd also call having input in early drafts as "having a little bit of a hand in things." But, anyway, no big whoop.

The one thing I hadn't heard that is interesting... Favreau didn't get an on-screen credit? I'll be honest that I didn't look. But he's still listed as a producer most places and still seems to talk in interviews like he produced it. Huh.

Is that what collaboration is!?!

Your quote said:

I'm relaying that he didn't. He spoke to no one really in any official capacity. The ones that had the most collaboration were Johnston and Branagh as originally The Avengers was supposed to come out a month after Cap and that was primarily dealing with post credits scenes. The studioheads were the ones who kept everything running, creatively they allowed the directors free reign over their processes save making sure certain elements were included. Theoretically as far as Favreau was concerned, his stuff was done and moved on from before The Avengers was fully flushed out. Even Shane Black has said that Iron Man 3 is independent as they are working on Captain America 2 being the bridge from The Avengers and he hasn't really collaborated with any one else on any other project.

Feige on IM3:

Empire magazine sat down with Marvel head Kevin Feige to find out if we'll see the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline, which focuses on Tony Stark's alcoholism, in the third "Iron Man" movie.

"He's not an alcoholic in the movies. Maybe one day that's a deeper story, but we're not going to do it unless we can make it a full-focused plot," he explained, adding that "Iron Man 3" will be the best in the trilogy. "It's Tony's most personal journey since he was trapped in a cave in the first half of the first movie, but it'll also have the largest spectacle of any of the 'Iron Man movies."

He was then asked about the rumor that the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will show up in "Iron Man 3." Feige denied it, but said: "We will see the Ruffalo Hulk in the future. I don't know when or how exactly, but he's an interesting character, and so many new avenues have opened up. But now in the movies, who's gonna pop up where? You're never quite sure."

Feige also commented on the mysterious 2014 movie that has yet to be announced. "Our next step will be to introduce a character outside the Avengers' world," he hinted.

I dunno. It seems more like they're treating this as a "grand finale" vs. a solid third entry in the Iron Man series. And that's what scares me. :(

I have a feeling that they are going big because RDJ's involvement isn't yet secure. Who knows where they go from here.

If they part ways with RDJ after this Feige is going to come crashing back down to Earth really ____ing fast.

Feige hasn't been making even optimistic quotes, he has a "meh" kind of reaction and moves forward. If RDJ signs a longer term contract after this I would be more shocked than if he left.

I wouldn't be surprised, either. But Feige will rue the day and ulimately be thrown right out of his ivory tower if he makes a bone-headed move here

RDJ as Iron Man is on another level entirely from Norton/Ruffalo as Banner. And it's not even close. If Feige doesn't see that then he's a clown in the penthouse.
