Disappointing, but not the end of the world.

Now if RDJ didn't come back, that would suck.

I also hope Scarlett comes back.

I think the fanboy outcry is hilarious it's ____ing Favreau. Literally I appreciate what he did and brought a great film in number one but he isn't the God of Marvel. There are a ton of directors that can give us a film on par with one and even more than can match two. Losing RDJ now that would be a tragedy

While I agree there are plenty of other directors out there that can do well with what is there he did seem to be able to find something special. At least for me but I agree losing RDJ would be a much bigger and worse issue.

I'm sure 2 years from now, they will mend their fences.

Now that both the director and Tony Stark himself admit to having reservations about Iron Man 2's quality, can everyone agree that it wasn't that good?

I remember there being some hardcore defenders when the flick came out. I called it the equivalent of Ghostbusters 2, which might be harsh, but that got me some flaming rage from some folks here. :lol

More News from the wonderful WWW:

Favreau insisted there was no bad blood between him and Marvel._ He simply wants to direct The Magic Kingdom for Disney, and that's all.

"Marvel and I both came of age together. The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. Iron Man has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin [Feige] and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the Iron Man films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.”

He explained he really wanted to play in a new world, one that would fire him up as a filmmaker and wasn't_ "loaded with built-in expectations."__ His love for Walt Disney and Disneyland runs as deep as any fondness for superheroes: "Between the theme parks and the movies, the Disney iconography was probably the first set of archetypes that I was exposed to. Walt was able to expose me as a child to the full array of emotions, including fear and sorrow. Those movies and attractions haunted my dreams and made a deep impression on me as a child." And now he wants to bring them to life (the film is about a family who causes the rides to come alive), and play with more family friendly entertainment again.

As I said in the initial news post, I'm sad to see Favreau leave the Marvel universe. He brought a lot to it._ When the dust settles on the superhero decade, I think we'll find that Favreau and Christopher Nolan defined it, for better or worse, and ushered in something massive that will leave its mark on a generation.

Ultimately, the reasons and gossip as to why and how don't matter. He doesn't want to play with Iron Man anymore, and he's choosing to walk away._ He's not going to bog it down with negativity or exhaustion. You have to respect that. We've often begged for directors to do the same with their respective franchises. Good for him for having the self-awareness and self-respect to do so.

I also suspect this is the first whisper of an interesting and promising future for Disney._ Remember, they also have David Fincher working on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (news reconfirmed by Disney and Favreau) and Guillermo Del Toro working on The Haunted Mansion._ They have Andrew Stanton working on John Carter of Mars._ They have Pixar. I don't think we're looking at the same direct-to-disposable-DVD company that we were in the past.__ Something is brewing, and the fact that three top notch directors are in on its beginnings should excite or intrigue every film fan with a pulse.__

So yeah, Iron Man 3 will have a new director. We'll _____ about it if there's cause to. But for now, there's a bright side, and I'm going to be a bit cheesy and look at it. I don't really give a damn about any gossipy tidbit that might leak, or what anyone (with the possible exception of Robert Downey Jr.) thinks about Favreau leaving._ It's the past. It doesn't matter. We'll look to the future, and hope everything discussed here earns our ticket money and the time we spend geeking out about it.

Re: Favreau NOT Directing Iron Man 3

:D Seriously though, this is kind of a bummer. Favreau did a fantastic job. I think some here are under-valuing the importance of what he did. It takes more than fancy effects and a shiny outfit to make a good movie. But I do think there are other competent director/creators out there that Marvel can tap, that would do the character and franchise justice. We'll see. . .

I agree. While Favreau didn't do spectacular action sequences (I thought they were more than adequate, though), he handled the characterization perfectly, making you care what happened to the people.

Its how he works with the actors and his style that is already infused into the universe he created. A 3rd movie with a new director is going to change all that, and this guy won't know what Jon was thinking about all the little elements factoring togeather over time. Who knows if the style will jive with the other two, I like that the first two feel similar in presentation. I liked the cockiness of all the characters and I liked Hogan's interactions with Tony. People can say what they want about IM2, its still better then any other Marvel movie except the first one.

As long as the next director makes his mark a little more subtly than, say, nips on the Iron Man armor, I'm good.

Wait, can the nightmare be happening all over again..

Will IM3 be the same quality as Superman III :horror :horror :horror

Will IM4 be the same quality as Superman IV the Quest for Crap :horror :horror :horror :horror

Aww man, forget him not durecting IM3, that Magic Kingdom movie sounds like crap...

Meh, I enjoyed Favs two films but it isn't the end of the world. Ultimately a reboot was coming with new direction, it's the Marvel way :wink1:

Least we get RDJ for the final piece and he has financial stake in the film therefore, I wouldn't predict a collapse. Just different from first two.

1st was superb, 2nd I found boring and no where near as good as the first so I'm not too fussed about this news at all.

Someday you might have kids and you'll appreciate when a decent director works on a family film.

It's too bad Marvel screwed the pooch on this. They mismanaged Favreau and forced IM2 into production to meet a release date with a subpar script. You can bet RDJ will walk when his contract is up.

Iron Man has been the rediscovery of Downey, and he's now an A list actor again.

Favreau has talent and he's untethered from a drifting ship. Good for him.

Favreau is full of ____. Disney owns Marvel, if they wanted him for both they could easily work it out, he isn't stupid though and isn't going to bite the hand that fed him (Marvel) especially since the Mouse his new employer now owns his old.

Marvel is using the Iron Man films as a vehicle for the rest of the universe, they've said that since 1 after we saw Nick Fury and after Tony Stark appeared in The Incredible Hulk, nothing new. He didn't like it, that was one of the more noted conflicts similar to the Raimi issue in Spider-Man 3 with them wanting to jampack it so they can springboard other films and get them into spin-offs faster. He handled it as well as could be imagined in IM2 but everyone will admit whether its fun or not it feels disjointed.

Marvel is being ambitious by announcing release dates before even production but other companies are doing the same thing including WB/DC so again nothing new. RDJ loves the character so you can bet that if he can cherrypick the director due to contract and they have somewhere to go in 4 AND the cash is right he'll sign again no worries.

Iron Man IS the rediscovery of Downey but that was because of him not Favreau, true Favreau kept him tethered a lot from set reports and had him tone Tony down (which he didn't as much in 2) but other directors have done the same with Downey so I'm not really worried on that aspect.
