Official Synopsis

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

Sounds like Gary Mitchell is the villain to me.

But they killed off Gary in the comics which are supposed to be "canon" to the new Trek movies.

I'm gonna go with Garth of Izar. Maybe Ben Finney. No way they'd use Gary Mitchell after killing him off already in the comics (which didn't even start until the movie was filming, I believe. No way, no how). They've actually hinted at a much more active Starfleet Intelligence in the comics multiple times, getting their hands in all sorts of things. Check out the redo of "Return of the Archons" - Sulu was nearly recruited into Starfleet Intelligence, and Pike was chastised for the way he deals with Kirk by them. I think that will have something to do with it. Maybe Section 41?

Imagine this: Finney's an old friend of Kirks, who gets in trouble with brass after Kirk exposes something he did (like in TOS), or maybe his young daughter, Jamie, is killed by something Kirk did/failed to do. He finds out about a little blonde lab tech named Carol Marcus that Kirk had a fling with, who has now told him she's pregnant, and kills her, and Kirk goes after him, only to find out Finney's really being manipulated by the shadowy, insane Captain Garth of Izar of Starfleet Intelligence. BOOM.

Just cause they say the comics are canon to sell some copies doesn't mean jack & squat

Some on the Trek boards welcome the TNG alien parasites taking over the Federation storyline; that would be cool, but doesn't match the synopsis to me

I dunno, Orci's continually saying that, and it was a big selling point. They'll have a stink on their hands if they go against it. I could see them doing it, but why would you make the FIRST issue deal with Gary Mitchell, when you're ALREADY filming the movie, AND come out and say that it's canon all at the same time? That doesn't make much sense. If they changed their mind later, yeah, sure. But not all within that short a time frame.

Not to mention, they're doing a canon comic lead-in to the movie like they did for the last movie, so there's obviously going to be some backstory (like the whole Spock/Nero in the "Prime" universe). No point in doing that if it's Gary Mitchell and it's already been done.

What? :dunno

Roberto Orci is a consultant on the IDW series. These comics take place between Star Trek 09 and Star Trek Into Darkness.
The Gary Mitchell 'episode' took place in the first two issues.

There is also a 'prequel' mini-series being released that leads directly into the new movie titled "Countdown into Darkness".

I read the Star Trek prequel series. It was pretty decent. I know they said it's official, but it's just some marketing hype. They can ignore it the moment they have a conflicting idea and the only people who will notice are some fanboys who should be used to retcons.

It's as binding as the Star Wars EU. I'm sure Lucasfilm will ignore the hell out that too.

I've never been much of a Star Trek fan but I really enjoyed the last one & now I'm excited for the new one. I'm surprised HT, EB or SS haven't got the licence for Star Trek. It's a huge franchise with a huge following :dunno

Go watch Sherlock on Netflix. Benedict Cumberbatch is a fantastic actor. You'll be even more eager for the new film.

He really is fantastic......can you imagine him as a full on evil dude? Anyway, poster is a total ripoff of the latest Dark Knight movie concept. Paramount, get your own poster ideas!!!

Everyone is wondering about Cumberbatch as the badguy. considering the first JJ movie was pretty faithful to the costumes, what original series character would wear a trench coat like that?

Kahn in a trenchcoat? no

Gary Mitchell? maybe

Gary Seven? Yes

Charlie X? well, if grown up

Matt Decker still alive in a parallel universe and still nuts!? Yes
