i said in this very thread what feels like months ago that they should have started with Godzilla on his own in this film because the advertising of this film was doomed to let people down but people were so hyped on this movie they felt like it could do no wrong. And since Godzilla fans were so ready to settle for anything not related to Zilla '98 now we have what many people feel like is a mediocre film and Godzilla's reputation in Hollywood is not as improved as it should be. I swear this movie should have been awesome they even had a decent backstory a good cast (on paper) but they underutilized their best actors and the main star and monster himself smh.

Worse than Iron Man 3 or Transformers: The Dark of the Moon?

yes, Iron Man 3 just had a bad guy swap and I'm not sure what you mean with Dark of the Moon, I felt I got the movie that was advertised. Godzilla is completely different from the trailers we got. We were advertised the monster of death and destruction but we got this

I haven't quite put my finger on what I really didn't like but I think it has to to with the fact that Godzilla really isn't the one driving the plot. Godzilla himself is just depicted as a giant animal, nothing mythological or anything. Also as others have said, this godzilla wasn't angry, he didn't retaliate on the military firing at him, he was there to fight the Mutos, for no real reason other than the exposition we are given. I think a flashback scene when Ford is being told about Godzilla and the Mutos of maybe the Mutos long ago feeding on Godzilla for his nuclear energy would have gone a long way for showing WHY godzilla wants to kill these things. And then actually show Godzilla waking up in the bottom of the ocean instead of telling us he's going to wake up. That's one thing the 98 godzilla got right was the build up to zilla, it is fantastic, this one he just shows up because someone says hes going to show up.

then i guess you should go ahead and read the graphic novel

Godzilla Awakening Graphic Novel prequel!

Godzilla Awakening follows the exploits of the elder Dr. Serizawa (Ichiro’s father) from 1945-1954 as a member of the elite Monarch Unit. A group tasked with finding and exterminating the MUTO creatures. Though what the good doctor would theorize, and this unit would later discover, would be something far greater. A living legend, a monstrous myth, the king of all monsters, Godzilla! This book set out to expand the historical universe of the 2014 Godzilla film and it has succeeded wonderfully. If you want more insight into just what drives Ken Watanabe’s character, Dr. Ichiro Serazawa in the film, then this story about his father, is a must read.

it is interesting to see some people starting to defend 98 godzilla. Before no one dare say anything good about it.

but now i am seeing some people singing all kinds of praises about it :lol people talking about hoe great gino was because they hated this movie lol.

Let's not exaggerate. No one's defending G98, but there were some cool elements to it. Godzilla was not one of them, which is why it's still largely rejected by the fan community.

Godzilla Awakening Graphic Novel prequel!

I might look into that, but all in all I did enjoy the film. I just think a scene featuring the history of Godzilla and the Mutos would have gone a long way. Just a short fight of a hand full of Mutos jumping on godzilla and absorbing the nuclear energy out of him and pretty much leaving him for dead as he retreats to the ocean would have helped. But I had a hard time getting into the final fight because I didn't feel like I came just to watch animals fight, I wanted godzilla to try and fail and the end fight would be his redemption moment, but in this case because we didn't get a first fight there's no redemption moment to be had. That's what I love about godzilla vs mechagodzilla, godzilla is pretty much outclassed in his first fight and when he returns at the end he gets his redemption and reclaims his right as the king of the monsters. In this film it was never taken from him and what Edwards did isn't make us wait for a fight, he took away the essence of a hero, which is what this godzilla was, heros need to be defeated so they can stand up again, it's what makes them special.

Where? No one is defending that movie at all. Infact this movie made people forget it. I havent seen it mentioned in any of the godzilla boards. Nobody is gonna but 98 above this movie. This Godzilla didnt fight the military but he kicked some monster ass and was indestructible compared to gino who ran. Please link me so i can see for myslef. thats utterly ridiculous. I dont care how disappointing this movie was it was way better than Ferris Buelers pet radioactive iguana.

believe it or not but the person i went to see the new movie with actually preferred the 98. like if both of them would be playing on tv at the same time, he'd choose the 98 one :cuckoo:

WOW. I remember people thought this godilla was a reboot to the 98 film.

I don't remember many funny scenes in the movie, but I do remember the audience laughing in the theater when Godzilla was throwing the muto around on the tv during the first fight, and when the bird suddenly hit the bus window. It was like a mini jump scare turned into humor i guess.

That I agree was funny, the TV scene.

But they should've cut back to the fight after the joke.

Because the movie was different than advertized, the halo jump scene with the creepy 2001 music actually felt out of the place in the movie when it arrived where as in the trailer it totally sold the doom of humanity.

That being said, I guess Garth Edwards felt that the Muto, especially 2 of them and with babies, were enough of bad news for humanity that Godzila fighting the military would've been a silly distraction. :dunno

Here's a question for you guys: what is the point of a mating call when the female already has fertilized eggs?

Ohhh, so they were actually a lesbian couple then? Transgender Mutos? Guess the pregnant one got ahold of a bunch of radioactive sperm donations before busting out.

:horror:dance

I do agree that having Godzilla on his own would've been a better place to start. There's certainly enough mystery around the character that they could've made it work, but I also think that they really tried distancing themselves from the '98 picture as much as possible. And actually, on that note, I think the best thing G98 did was the mysterious set-up for the creature. The destroyed boats, the footprints... love it or hate it, that stuff got me pumped to see the creature.

They should have distanced themselves more and not made Godzilla's personality so similar to the G98 one... :(

98 getting some love thrown its way now I see. :lol

I'm joking, I know what he's trying to saying with the comparison.

With G2014 they showed Godzilla right in the opening credits.

I know one thing is certain, no matter what problems I might have with G2014, G98 isn't coming anywhere near my movie collection.

:lol
