I mean he kicked his enemies ass but when it came to people he didnt care he was just like whatever. Compared to other incarnations who would just wipe the floor with the military. I hate to see it but even Gino put up a fight to the military. Next time they make one of these movies I hope they show more action. Thats gonna piss people off. Cutting to TV when a fight is happening, closing the doors when a fight is happening. If Godzilla cost that much to animate then they should of put one monster or Godzilla in the movie

Yeah.... It's unfortunate.

There are many problems with this film. The first being that they did not deliver what the trailer promised.

Brian C in all honesty did not have to be in the film. He was there as a plot devise to get his son to Japan.

The film could have used more natural Human humor... I am not talking about Transformers Humor. I am talking about the humor used in films like JAWS and CEOT3K. Funny that the director used those films as inspiration but he missed the thing that made them all relatable as humans and characters. Humor. Would have helped me enjoy the human parts more.

I keep harping on this but the Ken W. character was the worst. THE WORST!! Just Shut up and sit down. You don't know crap!!! You have never seen a Godzilla in action. You don't know nothing.

There were other plot holes that I won't hold against a film like this but they were there.

But The Lack of a real Godzilla ruined the film the most. We needed the angry eyed Godzilla. The don't F with me Godzilla. He did not have to be "Bad" per say but he needed to be a problem. We needed some deliberate destruction by the monsters. Not just a scared or being a natural animal destruction.

I really hope to enjoy this more with my expectations in check.

But Like I have said. I can't think of another trailer in recent memory that was as misleading as the first two were for this film.... Now that was a film that would have kicked some serious ASS!
:exactly:

Thinking about it now, that is what stood out to be as "odd" after watching the film. I usually don't blame trailers causing hype for a movie that ends up being disappointing but the trailers were misleading on all accounts.

Bryan was lead to be the lead actor, which I imagine was used for marketing purposes but it honestly made his early death all the more disappointing.

They indeed should have focused the trailer more on the MUTO's causing the destruction if that's what we were going to be given. That Golden Gate bridge scene is something that should have been more prominent throughout the film. Was a shame we only got 1 minute of the military actually focusing on taking out Godzilla.

Hmmm ...

so I just got back from the Muto show featuring godzilla! put my thoughts in spoilers. Massive godzilla fan btw, seen every movie. Do not read if you haven't seen the movie, breaking the movie down scene by scene.

I'll break this down by acts and what I liked and what I didn't like.

Act 1. Film starts out great, I loved the beginning with the power plant and Bryan Craynston was great. I also really liked the dig sight and the finding the fossils and the hatched sack was nice. Then we flash forward and we get Ford and his family, I actually really liked this scene and felt connected to them. Then everything else leading up to the reveal of the monster that crashed the power plant was fine as well. Then the unfortunate breakout scene happens and that was great but it removes Bryan from the movie and that wasn't a wise choice.

This whole first act was nice and built up to the return of the monsters pretty nicely.

Act 2. This is the films biggest hurdle. Ford is given a brief that tells the history of these monsters which I thought was fine, even if it was a bit out there but I let it slide. Then we are off to Hawaii and this is where the film picks it up a notch. I liked the Hawaii stuff, the train scene was tense BUT I did not like how they introduced the title character. Godzilla just shows up, he's not reawakened, not found, but just shows up to fight the other monsters. And when he does show up, like others have said, they show him for a second and then cut to a kid watching the monster fight. This is the ONLY time godzilla and MUTO cross paths before the final act and it was a nice chance to add a bit of action and battle to the film but we don't get that. I understand waiting till the end but i'll get to that in a minute. Then after godzillas brief appearance for the one shot he's back into the ocean swimming with the navy and Ford is off transporting a Nuke cross country to San Fran. This scene is also quite tense and pretty cool when we see the female muto.

This part of the film was a bit of a drag, nothing really happened and we saw godzilla once. Even then we didn't get a smack down between the monsters.

Act 3. This is where the money is. The last 25 minutes saves this film. It was awesome seeing godzilla rise up from the ocean at the bridge. The male Muto arriving in San Fran and landing on the buildings looked sweet as well, but then we the two start to fight, again the camera cuts away just as they make contact and Ford jumps out of an airplane. Now we see godzilla fighting with the Muto but it's still just a glimpse. It's not until the soldiers hit ground that we actually get to see godzilla and a Muto grapple in a long take shot but at this point I didn't really get the sense of awe I wanted because godzilla had already duked it out twice up to that point and when this one happened it felt like we were getting sloppy seconds. The final fight is also nice but no where near as epic as I thought it would be. I was expecting godzilla to grab the mutos and throw them through buildings but they just kind of pushed each other around, I didn't find it that exciting save for a few moments such as the tail whip, the foot stomp, and the atomic breath. Other than that I didn't find the final to be as epic as it needed to be to make up for the lost fights earlier in the film. Also godzillas rise at the end was ok but the sudden cut to credits at the end felt way odd.

Even though this part of the film ultimately saves it, it wasn't enough to make me love this film as it didn't make up for lost time earlier in the film.

All in all I felt the movie was ok and was saved by a tense final act. But the final fight wasn't enough for me to make up for everything we missed leading up to that fight. Godzilla just showing up felt odd and didn't build up to him much if at all. I also didn't like that you only really see godzilla once before the final 25 minutes and then he's there. It's kind of like having a spider-man movie without spider-man until the last action scene. It was good but it was also kind of odd, it had it's moments.

At the end of the day, I have to say I liked Pacific Rim much more, better action and I much preferred the characters. Godzilla actually shares more in common with Super 8 than anything else as the main monsters in both films don't really show up till the end save for a scene here or there, but I also liked Super 8 much more.

also felt like this was a better Gamera movie than a Godzilla movie. It was like Godzilla guardian of the universe minus some action beats.

Saw this earlier today. I have to agree, its good, but not the movie advertised. The last trailer was epic. Cranston was the star and Godzilla was a force of destruction and it looked awe-some. That's not what we got. Many shots from the trailer were either not in the movie or drastically altered. They really kept the Mutos under wraps in the marketing and I wouldn't have known they were in the film had I not seen them at SDCC in the airport 'fight' footage of Godzilla putting his foot down. And WTF is up with cutting away from the fights? Did they really blow their budget on human filler rather than monster fight CGI? Not a smart move.

It looks this is going to make a ton of money this weekend (likely $100 mill plus) so hopefully we get a sequel this film's trailer promised us. At least they didn't royally screw this up like the last American Godzilla. I think having Godzilla vs something else should have been saved for the sequel. It should have been Godzilla vs humans for this first film. So its not likely we'll ever get that now. :(

I do agree that having Godzilla on his own would've been a better place to start. There's certainly enough mystery around the character that they could've made it work, but I also think that they really tried distancing themselves from the '98 picture as much as possible. And actually, on that note, I think the best thing G98 did was the mysterious set-up for the creature. The destroyed boats, the footprints... love it or hate it, that stuff got me pumped to see the creature.

Aside from the egg laying and bits of silliness, I actually like the 98 storyline. The look of Godzilla wasn't anywhere close to where it should have been, but it was a decent story for the most part. I with they had combined those suspense bits of the 98 film with this. If you take the two films and mix and match some stuff, you'd end up with a great Godzilla film IMO.

Although the lack of Godzilla in the film was a bit disappointing, I did enjoy the human characters. I thought ATJ and Olsen were great and this film has me even more hyped to see them teamed up again for Avengers 2. It would have been nice if Cranston had a bigger role, but what we got from him was satisfactory.

Overall, I really enjoyed the film. I'm happy I got to experience it on Imax/3D... but I don't think it is a film I would buy and watch again. I don't think a home TV would compare. :lol

it is interesting to see some people starting to defend 98 godzilla. Before no one dare say anything good about it.

but now i am seeing some people singing all kinds of praises about it :lol people talking about hoe great gino was because they hated this movie lol.

Instead we got that forced humor of Ford telling his wife some useless joke with her laughing at it while the audience is yawning.

Nothing worse than valuable minutes being wasted on fake humor and horrible exposition.

Godzilla didn't attack one soldier. :(

With the studio being so afraid of keeping Godzilla squeeky clean i'm actually surprised that they allowed the tsunami.

I don't remember many funny scenes in the movie, but I do remember the audience laughing in the theater when Godzilla was throwing the muto around on the tv during the first fight, and when the bird suddenly hit the bus window. It was like a mini jump scare turned into humor i guess.

This had to be the worst case of false advertisement I have ever seen for a film. The trailers showed us a deadly serious film about a monster that was going to "send us back to the stone age" that Monster would be Godzilla and the film Stared Brian C. Hell even the Godzilla shots were done differently so we would think it was just Godzilla and not Godzilla the savior vs the Mutos.

Worse than Iron Man 3 or Transformers: The Dark of the Moon?
