Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Yeah, there have been several attempts at adapting Alan Moore comics to film. Watchmen and V were OK, but the others were bad to terrible. If the original writing that made a story great doesn't translate, then nothing else matters. Though Days of Future Past took major liberties with the original story, it was still an extremely solid story unto itself. So, it worked. Only cosmetic connections between Claremont and Miller's work were kept for the Wolverine, and the new story was bland and forgettable, so now no one cares about that movie.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I don't know. They tried adapting The Wolverine from the Wolvie mini series and failed badly as far as I'm concerned. I expect the same to happen if they want to adapt Old Man Logan as well. It's the writing that is sorely lacking in the Wolvie solo movies IMO.

It sure was mediocre but a major improvement over Origins, I'm hoping this new one will be a major improvement over The Wolverine. I wasn't excited for any of the Wolverine solo movies but this one has me excited right now, the R rating, Jackman's last film in the franchise, Mangold developing the story from the beginning instead of reworking and sanitizing a much better script they originally had so the movie could be PG-13 and fit in with DOFP etc...

The R rating seriously has me excited though, not that it means it will automatically be a great movie , but it might finally give us that intensity that a Wolverine movie should have and show us what Jackman can do in the role unshackled.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

The Wolverine being too slow was it's biggest problem. I don't mind story manipulation from what was in the comics since let's face it, they've never been faithful to them. X2 is the fan favorite and it's only loosely based on the comics.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Nah, the slow pacing was exactly what The Wolverine needed. Silver Samurai being yet another "take over the world" cheesy villain, yet not even an active character, is the reason why this film was DOA. Producers, screenwriters or whoever - they just don't understand what makes a good film in general or not interested in givin' it a chance.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Agreed the slower moments worked for that movie, but the action really seemed over the top and not really fit. The 3rd act was an abomination, not a horrible movie but definitely not a good one.

I liked The Wolverine. Loved the fight between Logan and the main chicks dad.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I liked it until he decides to spare his life and the line he drops afterwards wasn't very wolverine like.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Seriously, this R rated thing for super hero movies is just the latest gimmick, as soon as one film underperforms at the box office it will end. Just make the movie as it should be made, if it ends up being R rated, fine, but it seems so crass to just Shoot for this arbitrary rating for no other reason than one film had success with it.

Exactly- a new GIMMICK ...flavor of the month...

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Well for Deadpool it isn't a gimmick, except as far as Deadpool himself is a bit of a gimmicky character. But sure, if it catches on with other films it will probably come and go when studios realize that the fact that it was R wasn't the reason for its success.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Except with R, theres literally no way it can harm the film unless the directors/studio try putting a gratuitous amount of violence in the movie for no reason.

X2 actually had to have scenes pulled from the school invasion scene (god knows what else) because the movie would have been R had they kept it and same for The Wolverine. I’ll take this flavor of the month anyway if it means that filmmakers can make the movie they want to make without having to remove or sanitize scenes so the studio can make more money.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I have no problem with the movie being R if the material requires it to be, just not make it to be R simply because they think it might somehow make it more of a hot topic.

But R can indeed hurt the film, with box office receipts if nobody under 17 can go without Mom or Dad.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

R can hurt the success of a film for sure, which is why Studios are always cautious but I don't think it can hurt the quality of a movie. Hopefully the success of Deadpool can help the next Terminator, Alien, Wolverine, Diehard and whatever other franchise to go back to their roots, in fact making everything PG-13 has hurt some films in my opinion.

I'm also hoping if the R rated trend continues, the budgets start lowering as well. Something like a Wolverine or Gambit film shouldn't have a 100 million plus budget, hopefully this leads to better films with more practical effects.

No doubt, I hate when they have to edit the movie down to achieve a rating they want, or worse, engineer it for a specific rating from the onset.

But I guess I'm not looking at it from a purely business standpoint.

It seems like every movie is PG-13, i admit it is nice to have a few R rated movies come out.

If we do get an Old Man Logan they should open the movie in a similar way to Origins but instead of wars have him fighting against various villains across different places and time periods. Slicing through Omega Red's tentacles, taking a punch from Cyber, stamping on Ogun's mask, it'd be cameos galore and a great set up.

They could show a few Sabretooth fights throughout showing that he always comes back.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I honestly don't even know why they are calling this movie Old Man Logan. There's just no way they'll be able to incorporate most of the storyline from the comic.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Days of Future Past took significant liberties with the comic. Civil War will no doubt do the same. Expect more of the same with Old Man Logan.

To be fair, what superhero movie comes close to resembling the source material its based on these days? Look at Civil War, no way in hell will that be anything like the comic version.
