Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Days of Future Past took significant liberties with the comic. Civil War will no doubt do the same. Expect more of the same with Old Man Logan.

DoFP still had an X-MEN sent back in time to stop a bleak future where Sentinels crushed and devastated the mutant population. Civil War will have Cap vs Iron Man at odds over registration. What's Old Man Logan gonna have? Will he slaughter the X-MEN (I highly doubt it)? There will be no Red Skull, no Hawkeye, no Mysterio, no Hulk/Banner kin, and no Dino-Venom. Just about every major plot point involves characters Fox can't use. I can't see anyway they can stay close to the source material and make this a decent movie. It's a waste of time IMO. They should have picked another storyline that could resemble the movie they end up releasing.

I have no problem with the movie being R if the material requires it to be, just not make it to be R simply because they think it might somehow make it more of a hot topic.

But R can indeed hurt the film, with box office receipts if nobody under 17 can go without Mom or Dad.

I absolutely agree 100%.

Yea they need a savage Sabretooth like the first X-Men, not a dude in a suit with fingernails.

Just growing and looking the part was enough for X1. Although, it would be nice to actually have him with some dialogue this time.

One way to get Sabertooth to show up in this would be to **** with Logan on his birthday, since that's a thing in the comics.

I don't see how Civil War is any more faithful than what you are anticipating we'll get here, based on what little we know. I suspect both will take huge liberties, and only share minor connections here or there. The fundamental premise is pretty significantly different, since there are so few super powered characters to begin with. And it's presumably not juvenile negligence that's going to be the catalyst for everything, but the events of Age of Ultron. Which, ironically, were primarily the fault of the guy who is on the side of the government in this film!

But I strongly disagree with your larger argument that live action films should ape comic stories. We've already had those stories. If the movies can't bring something new and interesting to the table beyond being an existing comic in another medium, then I don't have much use for them. It's like a musical cover of a well known song. It can be nice, but in most cases it has pretty limited value in relation to fully original works.

I personally don't need or want them to come close to the sources material, I just hope they use that story for inspiration but make something original, unique, and can stand on its own.

I agree with all of what you said. I want something unique and original. Them saying their making a movie based off Old Man Logan storyline is none of those things IMO. If Logan isn't old, doesn't have Mysterio trick him into slaughtering the X-MEN, or have Banner's grand kids kill his family...you don't have a story based off Old Man logan. I'm hoping like hell the next movie has nothing to do with the Old Man Logan storyline. There's NOTHING in that storyline I think will make for a good Wolverine movie. I was really hoping that FOX would get at least one Wolverine solo movie right. Jackman deserves that given how much he's put into the role over the years. Give the man a storyline/script that sends him out with a bang. I fear this new movie will just be more of the same crap we've seen before.

There's no doubt liberties were taken with Civil War. However, it will always boil down to Cap vs Iron man over government backed registration. From what I've seen of the previews so far, that theme runs throughout the movie. I'm not saying movies should ape comic stories. I have no problems with liberties being taken. However, I firmly believe that the theme of any storyline should remain intact. Why call the new Cap movie Civil War if the movie takes such liberties as to ignore the entire theme of the storyline?

IMO, the Old Man Logan storyline can't successfully be translated to screen. If they prove me wrong, I'll admit it. I'm going to see the film regardless. I just think that FOX should have given Jackman a better storyline/script. Nothing I've seen of the past 2 solo movies tells me they will pull this next movie off. I'm a HUGE Wolverine fan and to see FOX fail so miserably in the solo movies so far really sucks. I just want to see one great solo Wolvie movie and I don't see this next movie being any different from what we've seen before.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

So this continues to be a real mystery. We're less than a year away now and barely know anything other than hints that it might be based on OLD MAN LOGAN.

I decided to do a little research tonight just to assemble what we have so far (which is very little):

Working Title: JUAREZ
*in OLD MAN LOGAN, Wolverine's farm was in Sacramento, California so maybe the movie opens in Cali and takes Wolverine south of the border.

MPAA Rating: R

*The best thing the movie has going for it so far. X-MEN ORIGINS (2009) & THE WOLVERINE (2013) would have been much better films had the writers' hands not been tied by the studio's wish to make them accessible to younger audiences.

Release Date: March 2, 2017

*KONG: SKULL ISLAND opens the week after, though I don't think it'll affect it too much. Same goes for Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST on March 16th. This will be the only R-rated CBM so it should go unopposed throughout the month of March until GHOST IN THE SHELL opens on the 30th.

Director: James Mangold

*He did well with THE WOLVERINE (2013) but he could have done better. HEAVY, COPLAND, GIRL, INTERRUPTED & WALK THE LINE were all great films and the best he's done so far. The 3:10 TO YUMA remake was pretty good. Didn't care for IDENTITY, while KATE & LEOPOLD and KNIGHT & DAY were just pleasant popcorn movies (nothing to brag about).

Written by: Michael Green & David James Kelly

The only [released] film Green penned was GREEN LANTERN (2011). But he also wrote the upcoming ALIEN: COVENANT (2017) & BLADE RUNNER 2 (2018). David James Kelly's only writing credit was the never-produced FOX DAREDEVIL reboot.

*Not diggin' these writers.

Cast:

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier
Boyd Holdbrook as Yet-To-Be-Revealed Villain
Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth?

*If Schreiber comes back the movie goes up a few points. He's a tremendous actor & was the best thing in X-MEN ORIGINS. Ever since that he's been killin' it with RAY DONOVAN (three Golden Globe Nominations, 1 Emmy Nomination), plus strong turns in SPOTLIGHT, PAWN SACRIFICE, THE BUTLER & DEFIANCE. Holbrook was pretty good in NARCOS. He's a good addition. But you gotta bring Schreiber back.

The Cinematographer hasn't been announced but I hope FOX nabs Amir Mokri (MAN OF STEEL) who was originally going to do THE WOLVERINE (2013).

Plot: All we know officially is via Simon Kinberg who confirmed the film takes place in the future, which makes sense given that the last time we saw Patrick Stewart's Xavier was at the end of DOFP in 2023. Plus Holbrook's character is the Chief of Security for a Global Corporation pursuing Wolverine.

*You can adapt OML without Red Skull, Hulk and Hawkeye.

Stewart's Xavier smells like this version's Hawkeye to me, with Sabretooth taking over Hulk's role. "The Global Corporation" may be the world power in the future that has dominion over everything which is run by McKellen's Magneto instead of Red Skull.

Because things seemed peaceful in 2023 during DOFP, the date should be 2045. That way Wolverine killing all his teammates is an event he's been tormented over for at least a few decades.

Really hoping this one knocks the last two outta the park and that the positive reception makes Jackman postpone his retirement a few years.
