That's a good point, but I'll always give Fiege most the credit here. To me the hard part was everything before The Avengers, building a cohesive universe, putting out successful standalone movies with B list characters and getting the audience to care about these characters. It made things a lot easier for Whedon, he didn't have to introduce new characters, or really write a deep story. What Singer had to do was much harder, because his X-Men films didn't have the luxury of having these characters fleshed out in their own movies. If anything, The Avengers should have been a lot easier to actually give us a good story over X-Men. I know that's not what Disney really wanted though.

Well, it's not like a film titled "The Avengers" was gonna have a "deep" story. It's literally about a band of super-heroes teaming up to defeat bad-guys, that's it. There are no statements to be made. It's a purely action driven title. Sequels do have the opportunity to flesh out the characters and whatnot, but Avengers itself was always gonna be an action film and nothing more. I don't know what more you were expecting, really. Even the Ultimate version, which was the "darker & more sophisticated" one, just used Secret Invasion (before it was a thing) and Nazis, plus the Chitauri.

That's the comics though, they could've done something a lot better for a movie. GOTG isn't the greatest movie, but it was a lot better than The Avengers in the story and character department, and it's essentially the same thing, a band of superheroes teaming up to stop a bad guy.

Pfft, Fox was making team superhero movies in the jungles of North Vancouver while Feige was suckin' on his mama's tit at Woodstock, darthkostis, Don't lecture pturtle about superhero movies.

When I went and saw X2 opening night in 2003 the entire crowd stood up at the end and was shouting "What is this ****? Is Marvel ever gonna have their own studio to make these films CORRECTLY!?" That's what the crowd said on the second day too, and again when I caught it a third time two weeks later.

Then on a business trip to Chicago I caught it again and people were literally laughing at how bad it was. As I was leaving I heard people in the lobby saying "Can you believe we were cheering for this film at the first midnight showing? We must have been really drunk."

Seriously, I can't remember the last time I remember an audience responding en masse to a movie the way people here say they do, apparently all the time. The most I usually get is the weird, awkward grunting or laughing of random shut-ins who are seated down the aisle.

Though. . .when I saw one of the Halloween movies years ago, and a guy in the Michael Myers suit appeared after the opening scene and chased a couple of women form the theater--that was gold.

So how would you, a Normie (filthy casual!) with no interest in capes, tackle this premise: "A group of brightly coloured characters team-up to save the day". The floor's all yours.

Points out how everyone has weird theater experiences but then presents the wackiest experience of all. :lol

I have found enjoyment out of most of the movies from the comics. I like them for different reasons. Logan is enjoyable because it deals with a man's journey to find peace and to reconcile his past and was very well done. I am a fan that is happy to get the movies we are getting and though some could be better generations before us only had the comics and the cartoons and tv shows. Much different today and I am glad to be able to experience it. I haven't read many comics since Captain America 25 right after civil war. I lost interest because of the convoluted storylines and continuous crossover events. I don't know if I could really make a top 10 list overall but Superman the movie, Logan, Avengers, X-men 2, Spider Man 2 Raimi version, Blade 2, Hellboy, Batman 89, and Batman Begins, and Punisher are some I really like.

One of the most criminally underrated, unappreciated CBMs of all time. Thomas Jane ate the role. He was Ennis' Frank Castle personified. Hensleigh did a great job with that film shooting it like a Sam Peckinpah neo-western.

If that movie came out today, it'd be revered and praised for being brave and bold in a genre where formula [sadly] rules supreme.

It was ahead of its time.

Yes I think your right that it would be better received today than when it came out in 2004. I really liked it as the Punisher is my favorite character. I like the Bernthal version on Netflix but I would love to see Ghost Rider and Wolverine and Punisher together on the big screen in a Hearts of Darkness movie or something. I grew up in the 80's so Punisher has always been a favorite of mine. Loved Mike Baron's run on the regular series as it showed Frank prepare for battle but also showed how crazy he was underneath the surface.

I would have hired James Gunn to direct the Avengers and told him to inject some story into the movie, problem solved. Family friendly tone and humor would have still been there, but also a better overall movie.

Also, most of the director's that are filthy casuals tend to make better superhero movies than the purists.

Yeah, but... you didn't really answer the question. How would you take that very core premise and offer a better story?

Ohhhhhh

If I knew I'd be making millions in Hollywood as a script writer. I haven't had the luxury to research these characters obviously. I would just hire someone else better than Whedon for the job. I just know, considering there's a few other ensemble superhero flicks out there, that having a decent story compared to The Avengers, it wouldn't have been impossible.

One thing I certainly would've done was make Steve Rogers the main character and tell the story from his perspective like Singer did with Wolverine. The whole fish out of water thing could have been done and you could have really seen Cap fresh off of waking up on ice adjusting to modern day America. Instead Whedon made Tony Stark and Black Widow the main characters which obviously lead to a movie where every line had a quip in it.
