kojima officially said that he was trying to appeal to a different audience in metal gear solid 2, primarily teenage Japanese female gamers. that was the whole reason for raidens character.
I might like the "make Snake seem more impressive" idea better than this. Make MGS appeal to female gamers? WTF?? (no offense to female board members, but. . .c'mon! :D )

well that is what kojima said himself shortly after the release of the game. he apparently felt as though he was going to western in his portrayal of his characters and wanted to add some androgynous appeal. i know that sounds crazy, but really that is the reason. ill try and find the interview.

At least that sounds like a reasonable idea from an economic perspective (even if really weird, given the nature of the license). So, I'm not disputing what you say. Whatever the reason for Raiden, it was a bad one, I just can't believe that it was only to set up a scene later in the game.

Part Three of the making of DVD that comes with the reg edition of MGS2. About 15 mins into the doc, Kojima states:

"In MGS2, I wanted to give depth to the Snake character, which is very hard to do when the player is playing Snake himself. So I got the idea of distancing the viewer from Snake, to provide a more objective view of him. Thanks to this system, Snake gains in stature! When you play Raiden, who is only a beginner, and then you encounter Snake, he suddenly seems more impressive."

Well that makes some sense, too, but doesn't explain why they would make Raiden an "annoying, sucky" character. They could have done this and still made Raiden a bad-ass.

Not really. If they had made him as bad ass as Snake, then the whole reason of playing a different character to show how awesome Snake is would be lost.

Playing as a rookie is what makes you respect Snake more.

Who said it was done already?

Considering it takes anywhere from 3-4 years to make a Metal Gear game, it's unlikely that Kojima would get up in front of a crowd and say, "There's a new Metal Gear game coming out. . . in 2011!!" That would be a bigger blunder than all of last year's E3 (or whatever they called it) put together.

But Snake's only personality trait isn't that he is a "bad ass," and your quote seems to support this, by Kojima saying that he wanted to give Snake "more depth." You could be a rookie, and not have long-blonde hair and do cartwheels. But then, in MGS IV, they show you how they think a "rookie" should behave in Akiba, so maybe that helps to explain things.

Yes but they allready have the game engine ready (from MGS4) and there has been a year since MGS4.So development for a new title could have allready begun, so Q4 2010 might not be so far-fetched, if there is going to be a new game and not just an add-on (which can come quicker)

I suppose, possibly. But I feel it works best as it was done.

The meaning behind long white/blond hair is because he is a virgin character.

That interview was either on the Document of Metal Gear Solid 2, or on the Metal Gear Saga disk. I forget which one...

Deja Vu? MGS 2? I don't see it happening :lol. Kojima learned a vital lesson back in 2002: The majority of fans wanted Snake, and only Snake as the main character - they hated Raiden. In fact, many of them still hate Raiden to this day. Plus, Raiden's high-heeled stilettos have not done much to improve his popularity :D.

No not deja vu, not one then the other. It would continue to switch and to....Image playing a military base as Big Boss, then 35 plus years later you are there as Raiden, the same base but it has been bombed and it's falling apart. Sort of how we returned to Shadow Moses in MGFS4 years after the events happened...

And I dunno about you but making Raiden a cyborg ninja has boosted his popularity and badassry.

I loved how Raiden was able to escape war by the end of MGS4, that he realized he had people that loved him and even as a solider that meant something to him. Even with him losing much of his humanity from becoming a cyborg. Then there's Snake who could never do that, who even tells his best friend to leave him alone at the end. Good contrast. Makes Snake even more bad ass.

Really? I actually know a lot of people who hated Raiden more because of MGS 4. His high heels and emo behavior didn't help him at all. Remember that line, "it even rained on the day I was born"... awwww... poor emo ninja :monkey2.

LOL, there were some cheesy lines, there are in every MGS game...those few lines that are so awkwardly delivered or are suppose to be so serious but make you laugh out loud. The end of MGS was especially like this.

Just because he had a few lame lines doesn't mean I like him less, "I am lighting, the rain transformed" was pretty cheesy. It's just how Hideo writes, japanese people take this stuff to heart and are dead serious about it. Me hearing it makes just laugh and shake my head as how bad it sounds.

Snake has had terrible lines before and I still love him.
