Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Kojima's got to know by now the backlash from the fans already. I still can't believe he's just going to push through without Hayter.

There was this tweet by Kojima today where he posted his lunch. The comments below were "we want David Hayter back" and "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO DAVID YOU MONSTER"

My god I was laughing so hard!

He just seems like a snooty elitist D head nowadays. Your revenue comes with the UK and US, not just the Japanese market!

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Do petitions even work, where do I sign? Knowing that Kojima doesn't care much for the English voice cast is %#^*?!* #%^*^%#* especially since we in the west is whom buy most of his games doesn't make sense to bite the hand that feeds you and I just lost respect for Kojima he's become an elitist. I mean he's keeping same Japanese cast if he wants to differentiate snakes voice from BB shouldn't be change the Japnese VO's as well? his argument is INVALID. lol David Hayter is a huge part of this franchise /end rant lol

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I'm not 100% convinced this isn't a stunt from Kojima, but it's starting to remind me of what happened with the Silent Hill HD collection, also from Konami. Heather in Silent Hill 3 originally had voice and motion capture performance from Heather Morris (yes they even named the character after her), but when the HD collection was made, they changed the voice actress to someone more generic with much weaker acting skills, and Morris said she was never contacted to reprise her role, or even notified they were making the HD collection.

It was a slap in the face to fans of the series, not to mention Morris who pretty much defined the character, since many people thought her voice work was excellent and very natural, unlike the replacement. People complained, started petitions, but none of it worked. No reason was ever given to anyone for the change.

If Hayter doesn't return, I'm thinking it's partly a decision by Konami to cut costs with the convenient excuse that it's Big Boss, not Solid Snake, so it shouldn't matter if the voice changes. I doubt Kojima would say this in public, since he is still their employee. And all this supports the argument that Konami is a bit oblivious to the importance of the English voice actors.

Even so, I still think if Solid Snake makes a return in this game or the next, Hayter will be back to voice him, but if that's the case, you wonder why they wouldn't say that to ease the fans instead of making it seem like he's gone for good.

With the Silent Hill HD Collection, it was merely Konami not wanting to contact every cast member of 2/3 because every one of them are entitled for a piece of the pie, since none of them had any formal agreement on their restricted rights (as to what they can and can't do) when they first recorded and did mocap. Konami just decided to cut costs and redo the voice work instead.

It's a bit different with MGS with one of the cast member mentioning that they all signed agreements with Konami (can't remember who said that), so that none of them can make a claim in the future. But this also means that all of them are at the mercy of Konami, if Konami doesn't want them, there's not much an actor could do.

I'm with ya on Silent Hill 3. I loved every aspect of it, and Heather is my favorite SH character ever. I can't stomach to play the godawful HD collection, besides, the PC versions blows the HD ports out of the water. PC FTW.

Oh interesting, I didn't know that was the case with the contracts, thank you for the info.

Of course Konami never said anything about money, just gave the impression they were "improving" all the SH3 voice acting by announcing the new voice director and such. This Silent Hill situation made me realize back then that Konami doesn't care much about the English voice actors, which I was a bit surprised to see almost confirmed by Hayter. It makes me think even more that Hayter was let go because of his paycheck (if he really is gone).

And yeah, Heather is awesome! :rock SH3 is one game I really wanted to play on PC someday, for the reasons you mentioned. I should get around to that sometime!

Can you post a link, bro? :lol I'd love to see it!

Edit: OMG, never mind, I found it. Ha ha ha ha...

I think it's less about money but more rather it's about Kojima's "vision" of MGSV. We all know he's obsessed with Hollywood movies, and BB changing his voice seems like an epic scene from a movie, and seems "creative" on paper, but it's no secret that he's not as sensitive towards western culture as he thinks he is.

I mean think about it, did anybody ever shook Kojima's hand while saying that they loove David Hayter's voice? No. He probably never realized that Hayter's contribution means a big deal.

He probably thought that BB needed to have a new voice to signify his "rebirth" and to him David is merely a guy under his employment. He definitely underestimated the importance of David Hayter.

Oh, get Silent Hill 3 on your PC and run it on the highest settings you can. There's a widescreen patch and you can run the game on ultra high res and 60fps. I still can't get over on just how good it looks.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Letting go of David Hayter is probably the second biggest controversy to hit gaming this year (the first being that stinking pile of **** called Aliens Colonial Marines).

Poor guy probably can't tweet in peace anymore.

Kojima: "Today I ate.."
"Where's David Hayter??!"

Kojima: "Photographs of the beautiful sunset.."
"You monster what did u do to hayter"

Kojima: "Tweet to me your fav vacations spots"
"the hell u did to hayter man"

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I too, don't believe that Kojima had expected this kind of backlash. I love him (not in the gay way but in the bro way), but he had this coming.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

It's one thing if Big Boss was never played by Hayter, but it's burned into our minds at this point. Anything but Dave is blasphemy.

:goodpost: Yes, I definitely agree with that part about Hayter's contribution, it's what I was trying to say when I said Konami (and likely Kojima) are oblivious to the importance of the English speaking actors. And it really does look like they underestimated Hayter's importance! And Kojima definitely has his own brand of style, and if this is all his decision, I'll have to reserve my full judgement until the final game is released. ;)

And I agree with what you said about Kojima's vision, I think it was a process already started in MGS4 with Big Boss having a different voice actor when sharing the screen with Snake, as both being voiced by Hayter probably would've seemed silly to some people. As much as I wish Hayter was still here, I can't help but understand that side of the argument, that Big Boss is a different character, and it makes "sense" to have a different actor with this new era of MGS. Doesn't make me any happier though. :lol

Thanks for the SH3 tip, I wondered how people recorded widescreen videos of the game, it'll look great on my monitor! :yess:

You can say that Hayter and the Snakes are synonymous with eachother. By firing Hayter, KojiPro is removing very person that helped to make those characters so believeable.

It reminds me of when they didn't bring Cam Clarke into MGS4. That caused an uproar, but no where near this franchise shattering news.

Yeah, it does soften the blow IF the VA change was done more ceremoniously, as in let Hayter give out pointers to this new guy. It would have been a respectful passing of the torch. Kinda like how Adam West gave his blessings to Kevin Conroy and how Conroy has at least guest starred in every Batman show that he doesn't play Batman.

It's none of our business but come to think of it, Kojima followed Garbage and even tweeted and retweeted them. He doesn't follow Hayter, nor has he ever tweeted to him. The (awesome) band that was on you trailer was more important than the guy working 15 years for you.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I just can't believe how much Konami and Kojima don't give a **** about the English speaking consumers.

I mean, they probably account for at least 70% of their ****ing sales.
