Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I try to remain optimistic about the Classics future even though I've gotta say I HATE CO's business practices and the way they both run it and treat us communication wise. I am anxious to see what develpoments 2010 might bring for this line beyond what we know. The UK toyfair can't be far away, so I am hoping to hear something snuck out of there (although exclusives usually aren''t shown, right?)

I dunno if a companion could be a BAF and be financially viable. It MIGHT be since they are "sneaking it out" as it were. and it is part of every set.

One thing to consider for companion re-use too is the idea that if they sculpt a character, (say Leela), you could make that figure in both her brown and tan skins, so thats two uses, and if they made her hair a seperate piece, they could use the same head for a Talons variation with just the hair-piece re-tooled for her head (so no new sculpt), so there is some cost savings. THEN say they later released Leela in a ROBOTS OF DEATH boxed set with other re-issued vocs and re-painted POM Tom so they'd get to use her mold again. They can get good use out of a popular companion than just the initial release.

Much like if CO were to make a fur coated Troughton, as a cheaper variation, all they'd need to tool is new fur covered arms and a vinyl fur coat to hang over the already existing figure, using the rest of the original figure. He wore a fur coat in ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN, ICE WARRIORS, and FIVE DOCTORS (Five Docs was a different coat but lets assume CO wouldn't get so specific to as sculpt two different fur coats).

They could release him individually (or more likely rape us with a useless two-pack), then use him again in future episode specific boxed sets. That saves money. Now if they made Jamie, he too could be re-used in ep specific boxed sets (and wore the same costume in ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN and ICE WARRIORS, as did Victoria). All they'd need to add is an exclusive Ice Warrior varient with different head and an exclusive Ice Lord in the ICE WARRIORS set (and an Ambominable Snownan exclusve to an A.S. set and we'd be suckered into rebuying the same figures again for the 1 or 2 new ones. Common practice for CO.

I'm just giving an example for how they can re-use a sculpt all they want once it's made to get their money back. As has been mentioned by other people, in multiple character sets you can sneak whoever you want in them as long as there are strong sellers in there too.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

WST & Memnoch,
At last! people who understand what I'm getting at without feeling the need to get the pitchforks out :D

I made the mistake of mentioning my disappointment on a fansite and the CO apologists came out in force.
Why do some people follow things so damn blindly and adopt a retarded "Just be happy we're getting them at all" attitude?

And the whole "CO makes them for kids" argument is starting to look increasingly laughable when most of last years figures were released as collector store exclusives at prices that the average kid wouldn't have been able to afford.

It also goes back to what I've said before that CO were stupid marketing the Classics to kids in the first place because,

A) They haven't a clue who most of the characters are.

B) Won't take the time to learn about the Classic era because it doesn't look as "cool" visually as Nu-Who.

Memnoch,
Intresting idea on a Mattel Who line, I'm very, very impressed with their initial WWE figures so I think they could potentially do a decent job with Who.

I wonder why they got their stock on time and FP didn't?

Anyway congrats on getting wave 2, despite my doubts over CO's long term commitment and their first Master figure not being my preferred incarnation I'm still looking forward to receiving my order.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Personally I'm over the moon to get the Decayed Master, as the Target Novelisation cover used to give me nightmares as a kid. I used to have to lay the book face down!

Conversely I was too young to remember Delgado's Master, although of course I've seen him since and love his portrayal. I strongly suspect that they've had problems securing likeness rights from his estate. If that's the case, then you could take the view that the under-suit is a gift to customisers.

Don't get me wrong, "The Deadly Assassin" is my 3rd favorite story ever so I'm glad there's a figure of the decaying Master being released but Roger Delgado is who I think of whenever the subject of the Doctor's nemesis arises and as the 3rd Doctor's main adversary and original incarnation of the character I think he should have been first.

Maybe likeness issues do exist but I suspect that CO haven't even tried due to their "Doctors & monsters only" mentality.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I am sure it has everything to do with being young and watching Doctor Who but this is my Master ordering

Deadly Assassin (my first master)
Anthony Ainley (the master I grew up with)
Roger Delgado (the guy in older stories I never really watched until I got older)

Wot, no Eric Roberts? ;)

By the way, the Cyberman is AWESOME.

By the way, the Cyberman is AWESOME.

You know... not only do I like the TV movie but I liked Eric Roberts hammy performance. But he wasn't in the character long enough for me to even consider on a grand scale.

Per the cyberman..... :drool

I can not get these soon enough. Times like this I wish I had a private jet so I could just take the day off, jet across the Atlantic, pick up some toys, and jet back here. :lol

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

It must be frustrating. Still, once these are on general release in major retailers you should find them easier to come by online.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

My order,
1.Roger Delgado
2.Anthony Ainley
3.Geoffrey Beevers/Peter Pratt ( the decayed version seen in "The Deadly Assassin" & "The Keeper of Traken" )

The other 2 were never The Master.

Guess what accessory my "Deadly Assassin" Master is getting?
Here's a clue,

That gave me the creeps so much as a kid.

"A new body at last...."

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

i don't collect the line, but there seems to be new pics of figures all the time in this thread, so I'm surprised there are so many complaints about the progress of the line.

"A new body at last...."

Coming to the Classic era so many years after it finished it amazes me how creepy certain villains come across despite the often dubious quality of the costumes.

In the case of the decayed Master, the actors had to get round the fact that the mask had ping pong balls for eyes so I credit them both for the fact they still made the character appear a major threat as it could so easily have been "just another" masked bad guy.

Prog,
I think much of the frustration stems from the fact that CO seem incredibly uncertain about who they should be marketing the Classic line to and the lack of any official communication with the fanbase via something like the Q & A's that Hasbro do also plays a part, potential customers like to be given some idea of what's coming so they can budget accordingly :)

The one thing that rarely, if indeed ever gets criticised is the quality of the Classic and indeed the majority of Nu-Who figures because that is incredibly consistent.

The only Classic figure so far I would not give at least 8/10 is the Sea Devil and as the one with the Pertwee figure proves that just needs a better paintjob and maybe some better quality netting material for the costume.

The line itself is great, I've had no complaints at all. Make no mistake, these are some of the best, most accurate action figures out there. And perhaps I've been fortunate, but the choices made so far on what to release have largely covered my favourite era of the show.

The complaints largely centre around the hideously expensive "exclusive" figures, and the fact that so far they have been the only way to get hold of the first three Doctors. But there are supposedly good financial reasons for Underground Toys/Character Options to do things the way they have. As a consumer however, it's massively frustrating.

I doubt they have either. I think this is definitely the case. Regardless of whether they will ever do companions or the various Masters which would require likeness rights, they will pop out as many monsters as they can that don't require them first before they get to that stage.

I foresee CO being quite evil about never even bothering to try for anyone elses likeness because they can go so long with just the other monsters without having to, however I am more than willing to be proven wrong. :)

My Dad built it for my niece's doll's house a while back and once I realised it was more or less perfect scale for the CO figures a lightbulb went off above my head!

And yes that does mean I was messing around with my niece's dolls house to see if there was anything I could use when I take pics of my Who figures :lol

So once I've got some decent reference pics and the materials he's going to make me a screen accurate version of the Master's clock shaped TARDIS from "The Deadly Assassin" complete with working clock!
