Matt Ryan, despite the hype, is just a very average quarterback and we've laid the foundation to wallow in one and done land for years to come by giving up so much for Julio Jones..

I totally agree with this statement. As much hype as Romo gets, Ryan is in the same boat, with his "Matty Ice" nickname.

I wonder what the playoff odds are for the Broncos now. I know before last week they were 120-1 at some places.

I don't think Smith is THE problem as much as a part of it. We haven't had a defense in more than 4 years. Matt Ryan, despite the hype, is just a very average quarterback and we've laid the foundation to wallow in one and done land for years to come by giving up so much for Julio Jones. Julio is great but we have a quarterback that can't throw the ball 20 yards why so much for a deep threat?

If Dimitroff can put together a defense our offense is servicable enough to play smart and win games. Smith stays, Mularky needs to leave, Van Gorder is gone, revamp the D starting at the top and bring in a west cost offensive scheme that fits a short ball passer and Atlanta will be fine. It'll take time to build a D with how little we have to work with in the draft for two years so whoever comes in will need to be crafty.

That's a pretty damn sound assessment.

I know this name gets tossed around far too often but what do you think about Gruden? He’s an offensive guy that can bring the WC system in, which I think would really give the team a bit more offensively.

I would love someone like Gruden just for the instant belief and respect he'd have with the players for his name alone. Wishful thinking though. With what Mike Smith did for the organization with the state it was in after the whole Vick and Patrino thing he's bought himself a lot of time with Arthur Blank. Are there any more Harbough family members available? :lol

Hey, as nice as alex smith has done this year if the Falcons want to send us Matt Ryan I'd take that big time. I think he's more than an average QB.

sprig0701 hasn't posted since the Steelers lost.

Hey bro, come on back. :wave Same thing happened to me when the 15-1 Vikings lost to something called the Atlanta Falcons in the 1998 playoffs. :horror :lol

I still say Ryan's a top 10 NFL QB. Maybe 9 or 10 on that list, but still.

Well, let's see.... do we count Peyton?

Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Peyton, Big Ben, Eli.... Then it can get a little questionable. Romo, Vick, Rivers, Stafford, Newton, Fitzpatrick, Dalton, Schaub, Alex Smith (in no order)? Yeah, I'd say 9 or 10 but he still has the upside to be top 5 if he's in the right system.
Steve Young has a weekly radio show here in the Bay Area and he seems to think Ryan has the tools to be "like Brady", but as Young often points out you need the right system in place that allows for a QB to be successful and puts him in situations where he can then shine... Look at Mark Sanchez for example. He's set up for failure. They play call from a defensive stand point and then he's forced to try to make plays, forces the ball and turns it over. Ryan may not be in that negative a team system but he has the tools, brains, accuracy, to run a great offense, he just needs to have a staff that wants to do the same. Like Wofford pointed out, his deep ball isn’t very good, so what does that say about a coaching staff that tries to throw deep all the time? Stupid…. Great coaches tweak their system to fit the personnel.

Not that any of you would want to hear Young's show but it's about the best football related show out there, of course the focus is 9ers and Raiders though... KNBR (knbr.com) is the radio station, you can stream old shows of course. His insight into QBing is fantastic.

I have no doubt that systems contribute to making good QBs great QBs (look no further than what happened in Green Bay when Rodgers went out). But. . .

Insanity. And Sanchez just makes bad decisions based on what I've seen of him. You can't fix that with a system unless you want to make him a game manager type like what Flacco is becoming. Of course, maybe that's the way to go with the Jets, but I don't think Sanchez is very good.

If Matt Ryan is not still in the top 10 right now by middle of the next season he certainly won't be. The QB talent in the league is starting to pile up a lot quicker than he's striding. ATL would be smart to draft a replacement and dump him for whatever they could get or go after Flynn or even Jimmy Clausen.

Never mind Rich, you're right. Matt Ryan truly is Tom Brady in disguise. Now let's take a little ride to a friendly place where men in white coats will give you your happy pills.

Watching the BCS game last night makes we wish the Draft was today :wink1:

Saints, GB and Pats can use some of those defense Bama backs this weekend, at least they know how to tackle. :lol

Yeah I know, they probably wouldn't get them, because of their good records, but still.
