Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Sadly, I think it's going to be one of those, leave it open to the audience to decide where it goes, mysteries, but it did spark my interest. That Jack really wanted it in Curse didn't catch me much, it's a super fast ship and he grew attached, no big deal, I do that with cars, but DMC declaring that his acquisition had specil circumstances got me intrigued.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

This isn't Hot Toys, but since this is basically the main POTC thread I thought I'd put it here.

I recently got the Kotobukiya X-wing from Redfordfilms.com and they happened to have the Barbosa scene replica by Master Replicas for $1.00 (actually $0.95 after my newsletter subscription discount). Since I was already getting the X-wing, shipping was free. (I also got a MR scaled Clone Trooper helmet for the same price.) That's one heck of a discount off of the original $149.99 price tag. (I think both items are now sold out.)

This thing is freaking huge (although it's mostly because of the oversized base). I guess it's not terrible looking, but I think the concept was a flawed one from the very beginning. The whole "let's put pictures of the character in frames next to a sculpture of the character" thing just doesn't work that well. That said, the actual Barbosa statue isn't that bad. The paint could use a little work in places, but the likeness isn't bad in person. And he's kind of close to 1/6 scale (probably more like 1/7). He's a separate piece that slots into the base, so I'm tempted to make a separate base to display him on his own. Anyway, I remember seeing these back when they were first released and wondering about them, so maybe someone is interested.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

i hope somehow Bill Nighy comes back as Davy Jones (in human form) it would be pretty cool to have a trifecta of awesome with Sparrow, Barbossa and Jones interacting. an explanation For Him coming back, i was thinking up a meeting of something along the lines of

Sparrow:"Jones? but...youre dead"

Jones: "i was sent to the Locker Jack and i got out"

Sparrow:"b..b..but how?"

Jones: "its my Locker jack. ya think i dont know how to get out of my own locker?"

i dunno...lame maybe, but i think itd be pretty cool. Davy is my favorite character of the series.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

We never saw Jones really "die." The curse was broken and he fell off the ship into the water, but I wouldn't say he died. Heck, Barbossa DIED but that didn't stop him from coming back (although I still think it was lame they didn't really explain how - hopefully the new film will explain it more).

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I think some things are better left to magic and wonder. How does Davy Jones cutting out his heart and refusing to ferry souls cause him and his crew to become sea creature mutations, how can an Aztec curse make you walking dead only visible in moonlight.

These elements make the story interesting but having them make sense is unnecessary for the movie to work. Barbossa's return doesn't need an answer to how, it was just enough to have the twist that he was back.

One thing about the POTC movies I don't like, mainly Curse to DMC, are the added scenes after the credits, I never bother to sit through credits on the off chance unless I hear something. I watched DMC for a long time without knowing about the clip at the end of Curse showing Jack take the coin and that's how he was undead in DMC, I kept scratching my head, it would have been nice if that were in the movie up front, it may not have seemed important at the time because DMC wasn't planned, but I think anyone in film today understands the likelihood of sequels if your movie succeeds so anything you hide should be irrelevant, like the dog on the throne after DMC wasn't a big deal, Elizabeth with her and Will's son but again, no bearing on the main story.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I agree, some thinks are best left to mystery. But they didn't even really explain how Barbossa was brought back other than Tia Dalhma did it. Is he reserected, a zombie, ghost, voodoo, here for a limited time only, is he cursed again, etc. So I think just a little more info on that would be nice. I don't expect them to expain how/why that works, but it would have been like not explaining that the Aztec gold turned them into skeletons. We don't need to know how it does it, just that it does.

exactly! which is why I'm so hopeful

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I don't see Jones being back, I think that would be one step too far in having the 4th film be repetitive. It's one thing to have Barbossa and Jack, that's basically where they left you off, the pursuit of the Fountain and of course the innevitable plot to regain the Pearl again, but if you throw Jones in there again people aren't going to be very receptive too it.

I don't know who it'll be, but I'm sure some character that will be both Jack and Barbossa's nemesis will be part of the plot.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

perhaps another historical pirate? The film is loosely based on an old "prate tale" from what I've heard, so How about Edward Teach?

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Apparently the novel On Stranger Tides features Blackbeard, so as far as guesses go, seems like he's a front runner.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Blackbeard is Edward Teach. And he's a likely suspect. Although, like Davy Jones, probably reinvented into a supernatural villain of sorts.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I hope not. I actually would like to see some piracy in this next movie.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I hope not. I actually would like to see some piracy in this next movie.

If you mean like hijacking ships and stealing from them, maybe hints of it like the past, but for films, the focus seems to be on grand adventures and pursuit of great things.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I just want it to capture the old fashion adventure feel of the first film, no more, no less. I believed they were actually pirates in that movie.

The sequels, the supernatural pretty much swallowed them whole. But I fear this film regardless.... I'm predicting a screwball buddy comedy, which I think would sink them lower than the sequels did.

My expectations are so low they're buried underground.
