Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I thought at first he was going to be a major character in the film, after I saw it I just couldn't spend the money on what turned out to be a pretty minor and forgettable character.

But now, Chow Yun Fat from Crouching Tiger... that'd be a different story :rock

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I thought Feng was pretty interesting, actually. He had real menace and a great presence about him. I found him to be quite a formidable pirate. I love my figure of him, too. Glad I got it. Anyone who can stand toe to toe with Barbossa...

Feng also marks a nice variation on the swashbuckling, big-hat-and-a-sash pirate theme.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Sao Feng was cool, but he wasn't around long enough to enjoy for me. I didn't dislike the character, but I didn't have enough chance to like him enough to buy the figure. The only thing tempting me with his figure was the immaculate head sculpt, it was irresistable, but not $100+ irresistable.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I don't think Feng was bad, I just think he served no purpose other than "Look! We have Chow Yun Fat in this movie!" I felt the same way with the Keith Richards cameo.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yeah.

With Keith Richards it was mostly because that's where Depp got some influence from.

Exactly. Keith's appearance was never meant to be anything more than a small nod at where Depp drew his inspiration for Jack Sparrow from since Jack has been the most popular character and a big driving force in the popularity of the movies.

Sao wasn't just some cheap reason to have Chow Yun Fat in the pirates movies, he's not a genre actor and there's no draw to having his name involved in the project. They grabbed him because they were doing Singapore based scenes and he's a fine actor and they wanted him for that and he did fine. His character just was too short lived to get into. It would have required a very different plot, but had Sao survived right up until the maelstrom and then died or even faught in that fight and the film just follow a different plot, could have enjoyed the character more.

That about sums it up for me as well, I had no real feeling about him either way since he was such a small part. I think sadly just about anybody could have filled the role and had the same impact... I was really hoping he'd be more of a major player in the film :monkey2

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I literally groaned when I heard that Jack's dad was going to be in AWE. But I really liked the way they did it. To me it fit right in with the scene and the feel of the movies as well as the two previous ones.

I concur. That's exactly how I feel. Now on to Barbossa and a Hot Toys Keef. :D

Keith Richards or not, the inclusion of Teague was necessary to me. Jack, especially after that scene, really is like a big kid, irresponsible, living it up, but in just a short scene, you got the feeling Teague commanded and got respect and discipline from Jack, and the only person that could ever get Jack to look beyond himself. In Pirates story, had Jack not had that conversation with his father, his character would likely stab Jones' heart selfishly and take the story a whole other direction, but his father's words impacted him and he ended up putting his friends before himself.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I posted this in my custom thread, but I thought it would appropriate here.

Man, this one was a challenge and a half! I kind of think there is a bit too much detail in the skin. I know it's supposed to make it look more realistic, but Johnny's face was actually pretty smooth. I also think the sculpt is a bit old, like this is Jack about ten years after the movies. The brows are heavy.

Nevertheless, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out. I also tried to tint his coat up a bit with acrylic chalk. Moderate success there.

I liked how Maulfan moved Jack's eyes to the side for one of his great pictures, so I decided to try it with paint.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Awesome work Mikey. Sadly, it seems the destiny of his coat to stay chocolate, oh well, at least it's tailored well. I love how your repaint dirties the skin, that's one fairly key detail, not only tan, but dirty. One thing I'd suggest though, but in the end it's about your preference, you've got Johnny's eyes painted with the browns showing, but Jack's eyes always showed a pure black due to the suncontacts he wore for the films, they rarely, if ever, showed their true color.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Very nice Mikey! Awesome!

So has anyone ordered the Jack v2? Where from? I'm thinking maybe I should get the Cannibal Jack after all.

Ohhh, yes indeed. I got both him and Will from D Shadow.

I've got Jack V2 and Will ordered with Sideshow and anxiously wait to place my Davy Jones order, hopefully with this week's newsletter. Other than a subtle variant, I'll probably buy any Captain Jack Sparrow HT makes, he's just one of my favorite characters in all of the movies I like.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

And a couple more. I actually got the coat to a nice mottled shade of blue-ish brown. At least it's not intensely brown anymore. I might do a gray drybrush on it at some point, too.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I see Toys2 has V2 Jack arriving Feb! But for $139. Sideshow is expected in Q2. Is the $10 price difference worth it?

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Once again we see how a good head on a 1/6 figure is a marriage of paint and sculpt. HT Jack v1 is clearly a good Johnny Depp sculpt, albeit more neutral in expression than Jack, but the paint, specifically the eyes, really detracts from the likeness. V2 should definitely be an all around great Jack portrait, both heads.

Depends. For me, I save about $20 a figure going with Sideshow. Sideshow's $130 plus about $10 shipping to my office, where Toys 2 is $140 plus $20 shipping for me. If this were my first Jack I'd probably go Toys 2 to get him sooner, but I have one so I'm good and I want will but not impatiently.

Also, looking at the proportions in this image, Jack is going to be on the same body.
