Well to me its more about the themes/story rather any specific characters and scenes.

For example Nolan's films generally always explore moral dilemmas, the gray areas in life where the lines between right and wrong are blurred and then facing the consequences of decisions you make. So they may be big and flashy but there's substance there.

I haven't been reading any spoilers or anything so not really sure what ideas this film may or may not explore. But what seems clear is Mendes doesn't just want to delivery a big flashy Bond flick which entices you to watch it with its snazzy trailer but you pretty much forget about it the day after you walk out of the cinema.

Also the shooting style appears very similar to Wally Pfister's style - I looked up who's doing the cinematography after I saw the initial trailers for the film and its Roger Deakins - one of Wally's inspirations. So there's that too. Actually it's rumoured that going fwd Nolan's looking to hire Deakins as Wally's retiring from the cinematography job.

Hmm, maybe he's drawing inspiration from the themes of Nobats, but I'm sticking to my theory of him wanting to make a good blockbuster film that's set above the rest, in tone and without mugging down the story. Like Nolan has done with a previous campy franchise (Batman) and films like Inception.

As far as parallels between films, you could go on and on. TDK had a shootout, so did Expendaples, it must have drawn inspiration from TDK?

Nah.

But yes, very excited for the cinematography in this one. It looks absolutely stunning.

Oh I agree - I don't think he's gonna explore the same themes and ideas. I was just pointing out Nolan has his set of standard issues he tends to deal with, and that is consistent whether it's an arthouse flick like memento or a big budget blockbuster like TDKR or TDK.

Similarly, I know Sam Mendes has done some pretty small scale arthouse films in the past, and that seemed to be his preferred medium. But he only got comfortable with the idea of a huge blockbuster once he saw that blockbuster can be done with some brains too like Nolan.

For yeww!

If he's inspired by it, good! He's being honest about his inspiration. I hate it when people (artists, politicians, anyone) just tow the line

'blah blah Bond great British icon.. absolute honour to be a part of this blah blah blah'
'blah blah our new record is the best one we've done yet'

Stuff like THAT is what's nauseating to me.

Not stuff like 'actually I couldn't give a **** about Bond'
But then I saw this great film, and it gave me ideas on how to make it work and make it relevant.

Or 'the new record is really different, we couldn't get anything to sound good but then we heard some of what xxx was doing and it was inspiring'

That's genuine, that's the truth, that's more interesting to hear.

Okay, so were on the same page.

:lol

:duff

I call director **** sucking.

That's exactly how I read it. :huh

Nice to see the usual suspects blowing up this thread now. :lol

Guilty. I just think it'd be nice to visit a thread without seeing "Dark Knight", "Trilogy" or "Nolan" plastered all over it, ya know?

If I didn't chime in I'm sure there'd still be a discussion going on about it.

They can't come to terms with the fact that Nolan's a genius. :lecture :lol

Insert Zach 'deal with it' GIF

If Nolan's trilogy hadn't been such a gamechanger, you wouldn't see it 'plastered' everywhere ;)

:goodpost::goodpost::exactly:

But I'm only seeing it plastered everywhere on message boards . . . from hardcore fans.

Maybe it is Nolan being a genius . . . or, ya know, his uberfans having slight to severe cases of autism.

Independent films/associations (and I believe that interview originated from Indie Wire) are starting to get a little pretentious like most art groups, specifically post-modern artists. This **** is getting way too serious and high brow, kinda deflates the fun out of cinema. I mean I'm not saying a Michael Bay mentality is the way to go but, man, this **** is getting old.

Nolan is starting to become a little like Duchamp's Fountain in that, soon, we'll start seeing comparisons and inspirations of his work even in films that predate his very existence. Hell, why stop at film? Maybe we'll see entire constellations named after "Dark Knight Trilogy" and "Christopher Nolan"? That'd be pretty cool.

I wonder how he actually feels about it, especially from his fans? Honored? Embarrassed? I wonder if any of this humbles him or if he condones it (like that mass hysteria of users getting upset when TDKR was getting knocked down a few percentage points and threatening with death threats).

Another clip. (*SPOILER* Doesn't contain batman or Nolan fellating)

Before DiFabio gets frustrated and pissed off and disappears again, I just want to say......

I love you man!

You know, in a geeky non LOS type of way.

POLITICS MAN, POLITICS.

No wonder you don't like Bond. He's been political since day one. Almost every early Bond movie has a political edge. Weather i'd be about the Cold War, or the space race, or something sinister going on in the middle east....Bond is a series that every movie reflects it's place in that time period.
