You know how I know Fury Road was a great movie? Because its thread is nowhere to be seen on SSF, it's buried deep. Same with BladeRunner 2049.

Jal may think I'm taking a sarcastic swipe at FR there, I'm not. I meant what I said. The fact is when something is really really good we just don't have much to say about it on here. There'll be the ''just got out of the cinema'' discussion that keeps going for a month and a half or so, then the thread dies.

I bet even if there was an Empire Strikes Back thread running concurrently with this one it'd die off while Episode IX: DROSS would go on and on.

Nope to all of those.

Good Bad Ugly is the one true masterpiece in that series not the others.

Godfather 1 is the one true masterpiece not Godfather 2

FOTR is the one true masterpiece in that series not the others.

Alien and Aliens are two completely different movies for crying out loud lol

There are only 2 movies in the same franchise in the history of cinema that both can be considered masterpieces.

Yup...SW and ESB.

I will give the MCU some respect though for keeping it consistently entertaining with IM1/TIH/Avengers/TWS/CW/Thor1/TR/IW they accomplished what many franchises could not even do for a part 2.

Alien and Aliens are two completely different movies? All of these movies are completely different movies. What in the world are you taking about?
And if in a discussion about cinematic masterpieces you introduce the MCU...which I very much enjoy...then sadly I have to seat you at the kids table and maybe see if you have a parent or older sibling that you would like me to discuss this with on your behalf.
If in your head you want to establish a personal rule that only one movie in a series can be considered to be a masterpiece by you...that?s your business. It has no bearing on the fact that each of these movies that I listed is a masterpiece. Yep a masterpiece. You?re gonna have to live with it. Sorry.

Actually since Alien and Aliens are two completely different movies there are some that say Alien is a masterpiece in the horror genre with Aliens obviously being a masterpiece in the action sci-fi genre.

I thought that I had read you correctly and I am glad that I did. You are absolutely right. I also forgot to list. Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049 in my list of multiple masterpieces in the same series so thanks for the reminder!

I would not get so hung up on genres and sequels...etc...ultimately a filmmaker makes a film and it can range from terrible to masterpiece or maybe something even beyond that regardless of the genre or whether it?s a sequel or anything else.
Cinema is a science as well as being an art and while there is a subjective component to what anyone may enjoy there is objectively great filmmaking. Regardless of who likes his films Hitchcock was an objectively great filmmaker who created numerous masterpieces.

BR a masterpiece yikes

Sorry if you don?t know that Bladerunner is a masterpiece then I think it?s safe to say that you are not all that knowledgeable about cinema. You like what you like...superheroes fighting...light sabers and space ships and that?s okay...cinema is not for everyone...my kids don?t want to watch Chinatown or The Seventh Seal...they want to see Thor kick the Hulk?s butt...they love that too...but if you ever discover some of the great films that are out there you may find them to be personally enriching.

But in this case literally nobody talks about it. Anywhere. It was just a somewhat entertaining film that has been forgotten by everyone except perhaps a small cult following. It didn't really transcend or define anything. And let's not forget IT LOST MONEY! It wasn't a bad movie but let's not pretend it was a classic or one for the ages either.

It has been rare. I think we would do better on films not involving the ST. For the record I am a big fan of Jaws [emoji38]

Nice!!!!

I think we are on our way to a beautiful friendship! :lol

Was browsing TV and found Jaws 2 on. It's gas the way the sharks got less and less real looking as the films went on. Jaws 2 is an alright flick albeit nowhere close to the original.

It the slasher movie of the series. I like it because its the most 70's of the series also.

Its an easy watch. Chief Brody and many of the other town folk and characters coming back helps also.

But yeah.. Nowhere new as good as the original but probably as good of a sequel as it could possibly be when following up that film.

ALIEN and ALIENS are both true masterpieces.

Some would say T1 and T2 (Not me - sorry a-dev :) )

Most think Godfather 1 and 2 are both great with some saying 2 is the better film (not me)

I agree that Good Bad Ugly is the only true masterpiece of that series and FOTR is the one true masterpiece of that series also..

I really like The Road Warrior.. But I don't think any of the Mad Maxx films are Masterpieces. They are good.. But do I think they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the other films mentioned.. Nope.

Yeah... I agree. I mean I like it. I was very disappointed when I first saw it. I was like "Really? This movie?" :lol

I love post-apocalyptic films but the action in FR did not blow me away. Since most of the film is action, I find myself slightly board. Loved the film score though. That really saved the film for me as that made the action more exciting then it really was IMO.

As far as Post-Apocalyptic / Mad Maxx type films.. I liked Book of Eli better then FR:chase

Blade Runner is a visually brilliant film.. In my older age I have found the story more intriguing. The last time I watched it i was sort of surprised to find myself thinking that Dekard was the the actual villain in the film. I just never saw the film that way before. I mean I know we were suppose to feel bad for the Replicants, but man the last time i watched it i just really sided with them. I looked at the movie completely from their point of view and how this guy was just hinting them down an killing them.

Gotta get rid of that Love story though... Ugh.. Of course there would be no BR 2049 without it.

I am not sure I am ready to call BR 2049 a masterpiece yet.

Is that why Empire Magazine ( one of the more influential cinema periodicals) literally just named it the best film of the 21st century so far...far from forgotten...highly transcendent...already one of the most influential modern films...sorry you are just out of the loop is all.

Most influential?? I cant think of what way that it has been.. But maybe I am not thinking of something.. IDK.

I like the car chases and stunts in Ronin better :)

Did they give TROS a ranking?

TRW is the masterpiece of that series not FR.

Yeah, RW may not be a masterpiece is the truest sense of the word, but that film had a major impact on cinema -- one that filmmakers immediately adopted even if audiences may not have been aware of. If you watch RW, you'll notice almost every shot is moving in some way. Except for a few static POV shots and an establishing shot here and there -- and even those shots have movement within the frame -- most of the time the camera is moving; pushing in, pulling out, panning, craning, always in motion like the movie around it. Sounds silly but that was a very innovative technique back in 1980 that we take for granted now.

That technique caught on, and not just for action movies -- nowadays, even slow movies have to have the camera moving, often for no damn reason.

They do...usually online but you can still subscribe or go into your local bookstore for a physical copy.
Yep...2 types of people out there. The ones who appreciate great filmmakers and great filmmaking and the others who think that Captain America and Aquaman movies are cinematic art and don?t know that magazines are still published.
