And who?s to blame?

The PT.

Lucas tried a completely different route with almost zero nostalgia and BOOM!

So Disney going the familiar route only made sense hence TFA over 2 billion box office.

AOTC didn?t even make it to 650 million.

I agree with that and I'm certain that was Disney's logic as well. I'm just saying, maybe it was wrong thinking. New company, new head, maybe a new direction was needed.

I mean, the PT was hardly 'fresh and new' without any connections to the OT: Obi-Wan, Anakin, R2, 3PO, Boba Fett, Darths, Emperor Palpatine, troopers, etc, etc.... in fact, it was one of the newest aspects that is its most indelible image: Maul.

I'm just sayin...

Can you please not use adjusted for inflation in your arguments it?s embarrassing lol

Weeell... when ten thousand bums-in-seats today earns the same $ as a HUNDRED thousand bums-in-seats 50 years ago, it is kindaaa an important point, no?

It's like saying it's embarrassing to compare what it meant to have $100,000 in 1919 and what it means to have $100,000 in 2019.:dunno In 1919 you could almost buy the Waldorf Astoria, in 2019 the same amount buys an okay house in Detroit (and yes, 1919 is only 20 years before the year Gone With The Wind was released.)

Even if you go half way and take 1969 (a year after Planet of the Apes) - what did $100,000 buy then versus in 2019? But you'd ignore that and laugh at the 1968 POTA for its paltry sum vs the most recent POTA trilogy, even though the 1968 movie is still the highest grossing POTA adjusted (and did it on less than 1/4 the number of screens of the recent trilogy...)?:dunno

Adjusted for inflation is absolutely pointless because you?re comparing movies from massively different eras.

How people lived during Gone with the Wind is different than how we live today.

The list of differences would be enormous!

How we earn money
How we travel
Highway access
Work commute
Vehicle quantity
Vehicle reliability
Mass transit
Energy distribution
World Wars
Education access
Health Care access
Social integration
Asian Electronics
Automation
Internet
Streaming
Videogames
Home Theater
Smart Phones
Ipads
Theme parks
Concerts
24/7 news
Print publications
Sexual revolution
Blurays
Sports stadiums
Gyms
Collectibles
How we cook
Fast food
Terrorism
Proliferation of gun violence on non criminals
Restaurants
Broadway

This all impacts how we make a decision on what we?re doing on our free time.

I could add another 10,000 items on that list!

How we consume entertainment and spend disposable income changes every generation if not much sooner than that.

I don?t care that Gone with the Wind is # 1 when AFI because life was not the same then as it is today.

I think there's merit in acknowledging all factors. Yes it was a different world 50 years ago but it's also no coincidence that most "adjusted for inflation" films are indeed the most well known and/or beloved classics of all time. I also think that another huge turning point for pop culture started around 2015 when the production value of made-for-TV movies and series' on premium channels finally caught up with all but the most expensive theatrical releases.

So it is indeed worth noting when Endgame can best Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark attendance in 2019 with so much competition across so much other media.

In other words I appreciate both jye and Tali's points of view, lol. :duff

Holy **** Jye.:lol

BUT... you forgot the biggest difference of all: "gender identity.":lecture:rotfl

I remember during the PT era Rick McCallum was fretting that piracy would be the end of Hollywood. Now seven of the 10 all-time highest-grossing films (non-inflation-adjusted) are from the past four years!

Sheesh is this forum imploding or something? I can only get in via laptop and not phone

I only ever browse on my laptop anyway but it's still wonky - very slow, database errors all over the shop and question marks instead of apostrophes.

I can?t even post!! This took me like 20 times, what Fuuuuu is going on, i can?t even look at topics because it?s saying my ip address is banned on my phone, desktop, ipad, modem, even on cellular, it?s ridiculous I don?t even know how you guys keep posting with all these issues, even messaged mods and still no response or a call for help into donating money

:goodpost: Great point.

Movies "aren't what they used to be" in terms of cultural relevance - my kids don't crave seeing movies the way I did. So many things that as a young person I got from movies you can get in other ways now: the big screen experience can kind of be replicated with an amazing TV, youtube can plug you into what's young, hip and edgy (the way movies used to in terms of clothes, music, culture,) streaming services have replicated everything from the big screen tent pole movie to the period drama to the quirky indie comedy/drama to Sandler comedies.

I?ve narrowed down my theater going motivations down to these 9 core events:

Star Wars
Indy
Arnold Predator/Terminator/Conan
Stallone Rocky/Rambo
Gibson Mad Max
DC/Marvel core characters
Godzilla
Fantasy movies
Horror movies

Now watch me destroy my own list by explaining why my theater visits are going to drastically decrease.

SW ok i?ll still go but man will it be an uphill climb.

Indy too late Ford will be 95 in the next movie super ridiculous.

Arnold?s career is over no more good Predator/Terminator/Conan movies will ever exist again before he dies.

Stallone?s career ended up in a much better place than Arnold?s but even he needs to call it quits while still on a high note before he ends up like Arnold honestly he should?ve done that after Creed and died in that. Rambo 4 was a good ending for him as well.

Gibson Mad Max 90% chance not happening so scratch that off my list.

Superhero?s ok give me a great JL, Batman, Joker, Spiderman, X-Men, F4 and other core character movies and i?m there otherwise screw you Miles Moralis, Eternals, Harley Quinn and other clone characters that poison the comicbook industry.

Godzilla I think after his team up with Kong bombs TOHO?s partnership with Hollywood is over.

Fantasy movies forget about it nothing will ever top LOTR, next.

Great horror movies are far and few between but give me a great F13, Halloween or Werewolf movie and i?m there but yeah that?s so not happening lol Please no more of that Conjuring crap.

I didn?t even bother adding Willis Die Hard, Weller Robocop or Aliens on there those are DOA!

Yup trips to the movie theater drastically taking a hit lol

But none of this will stop you seeing Avatar 2 & 3 about a dozen times each. :rotfl

Unless they debut glasses free 3D with it i?m not going.

Maybe HFR 3D will be the gimmick this time who knows.

I never cared about any of those characters I went because i?m a tech geek.

The movie-going experiences of my youth can never be topped. They were glorious and of a time that is long gone.

I'm so thankful I had them. Cherished memories, or I wouldn't be on a collecting (old movies) forum. I wish others in the future could experience them too... but its a brave new world.

Truly immersive interactive VR or AR is something that I'm very much looking forward to in my soon-to-come old age.

Once androids are affordable enough incels will no longer feel left out.

It will be just like buying or leasing a car lol
