Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

HELL NO it’s not perfect but HELL YEAH the the stakes and thrills were handled so much better than TFA!

Yep. Honestly the stakes were so high on Crait. That could have been the end of any hope left ( until the adventures of Broom Boy!) and the moment the Falcon blasts the three Ties gets me excited every time. TFA i just didn't feel any stakes at all for the end battle. Everything was obvious. The only part I truly love is the lightsaber going to Rey and her battle with Kylo. The Starkiller base blowing up, Poe blowing up the reactor (or whatever it was) had zero stakes to me because I just did t feel invested in what was happening.

My nephews hate the OT they say the effects look outdated lol

Eh, the real world has such limited utility for Generation Angry Birds.

The CGI in BP was as bad as anything in TPM. That city looked like something from a smartphone game. It was like "get a damn stunt man on top of a car and actually film it"! But...all major battles should have CGI Rhinos.:lecture

Just rewatched Fury Road and while it has its CGI-fest moments (the parts of FR I don't like) its like a revelation to see a stuntman actually hanging off the edge of a truck doing 70 mph.

I have to watch BR 2049 again - a good blending of effects in that, and looking forward to seeing it again without some woman behind me yelling "What the **** was that?! I fell asleep!" at the end of the movie.:gah:

I agree cgi in BP certainly wasn’t TWS/CW quality.

But kids are into Fortnite not angry birds lol

Too many great posts by Khev/Junk/Cereal to quote so good job to all lol

lol @ Khev and jye watching the tree burning.

There are 3 things in a man’s life you don’t mess with.

His money, his love of Luke Skywalker and his wife and in that order too!

I attached to Khev a long time ago here because of his perfect balance of honoring the old while celebrating the new.

He’s not all “Only the 80’s matter **** Disney!” or “Only modern cgi movies matter **** practical effects!”

Simply put Khev is a well rounded and informed individual and I have a blast talking film/movies with him on here.

Damn man, right back at ya! :duff

You know while TLJ is probably my 4th favorite SW film behind SW/ESB/RO I might have to say that visually speaking it's about as close to perfect as I've ever dreamed. Once Stan Winston gave us the Endo and Predator and T2 and JP upped the digital ante I've craved a SW film that perfectly married epic location shots, digital effects, and Stan Winston level practical creatures.

TFA was close but digital Maz was a real eye sore. RO would have been perfect if they had nailed Tarkin and Leia. But TLJ is pretty much flawless (again, only speaking visually here) from beginning to end. The Ireland shoot, Snoke's massive and 100% practical throne room, Snoke himself being a digital homerun, the space scenes, new AT-AT's and Crait speeders, Luke's awesome endo hand, etc. All of it is just totally off the charts. It's unfortunate that it will (rightly) live in the shadow of BR 2049's visuals but for a SW film it raises the bar to a new high.

Junkion just makes me laugh my ass off lol

Yeah every time I see him bump a thread I make sure I'm not drinking anything when I click on it, lol.

But back to TLJ.

HELL NO it’s not perfect but HELL YEAH the the stakes and thrills were handled so much better than TFA!

Leia herself saying "We fought to the end" might be the most somber moment of the entire Saga.

I like the aerial battle above Starkiller Base but it was *so* obviously an afterthought. JJ even said on the commentary that he didn't put much effort into it "because you know they're going to blow up the base." Seriously? Bring your A-game or go home man! :slap

I know I'm not alone in freeze-framing Immortan Joe's face being pulled off.

I find it so funny that you never once see Hardy's face in TDKR due to a metal mask, and then for half of this movie he has another metal mask obscuring his face. His agent must have been "there's good news and bad news - the good news is you got the part, the bad news...":rotfl

Oh that's right, Angry Birds, Facebook and WhatsApp are for senior citizens.:lol

Another thing I liked about Johnson's filmmaking process was that he literally had Adam Driver fly out to Ireland just so that he could stand off camera and respond to Rey during her "Force link" scenes. And similarly Daisy Ridley was always off camera on the Star Destroyer set so that he could also be really facing her. I know that a lot of these movies are just straight up pretend and that as professional actors it's literally their job to sell whatever the scene calls for but I still like knowing that Adam and Daisy really were making eye contact with the other person and hearing their real voices just as their characters were in the movie. I just like that extra little level of authenticity.

Watching the behind the scenes docs for The Hobbit movies kind of bummed me out when they showed that Martin Freeman never once heard Benedict Cumberbatch's voice as Smaug and instead it was the female dialogue coach who was off camera reading Smaug's lines to him.

if you love that kind of film making oh boy do i have the best movie for you!!!!!

Crazy how they filmed on that damn island with all those riggs!

They sent Hamill over that cliff for real FOR REAL KHEV!

I loved the WW2 bomber look in the TLJ bombers.

[emoji1547] BR 2049 were the best blend of CGI, model work miniatures and real world locations I have seen in quite some time. For myself that movie is a masterpiece and gets better every time I watch it.

Crait was some of the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen in any movie. It was a very painterly look to the sky, the sun, the red coming off of the white salt plains. Plus, I mean come on, Luke facing down the AT-ATs was just jaw dropping! I keep meaning to paint it using oil paint but won't have time until next month. But that is an image that immediately stuck with me and knew I wanted to paint it. Same thing with the rooftop scene with K and Joi. Just an image that sticks with you.

You're a painter? That's awesome man! I hope you post your work. :duff But yeah Crait was gorgeous. Man I love it when the speeders start going serpentine and the red plumes go every which way. Those wide shots of Kylo and Luke facing off against each other were incredible too.
