Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I like all the ladies, though. This is Leia’s resistance - a lot of women would have been inspired by the war hero princess.

It's so real-world and authentic too. Just like in our real wars - lots of women, especially at the top. Real-world relevancy is what gives movies their power.:lecture:clap

As a huge Trek fan... I have to say they're still not even remotely as big and idiotic as crap in TNG movies.

WTF? They made a movie out of ST TNG? Why would anyone do that?:horror

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Reading all of the comments and having watched the movie twice, I really can't think of a way to salvage the next movie unless you almost completely and totally ignore anything that happened in the last movie. And how can they do that? Jump twenty or thirty years into the future where Rey tried to start a new generation of Jedi but was killed before really being able train anyone to full Jedi Knight status. The few students she had have been scattered but are trying to restart the rebellion. Kylo has achieved his full potential as the main dark force in the galaxy and incured horrible injuries in his last fight with Rey, who he killed. He trully has to wear a suit now to keep him alive. It is a mix of Vader's and General Grievous's armor (that way they can go all out with the robotic visuals and cover up his less than pretty face). He has become the Emperor and Vader all in one and is obsessed with hunting down and killing the last of the Jedi trainees. Leia is dead, Rose is dead, Poe is dead and Finn has given up hope and ran from everything. Show the next generation of Jedi trying to learn the force from scratch and parts of the Jedi text left behind. No more Force Ghosts, no more force flying, no more being able to just pull crazy force abilities out of your butt without training and no more being able to physically affect things across solar systems. One of Jedi students finds Chewie and Finn along the way and convinces them to fight the empire again. Actually make the new characters (Young Jedi and other new rebels) compelling with good back stories and have them finally confront Kylo and destroy him and his empire. Of course this will take more than one movie but who cares at this point?

It’s like you’re playing Twister to have something to be sarcastic about. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Sadly this only really works once, for me anyway. On repeat viewings it's just annoying, and a bad start to the film.

This was another major problem I noticed when watching TLJ at home.
It does not work on extended repeat viewings. In fact everything that's wrong with the movie becomes more and more apparent.

Without the 'expectation' of where Rey's parentage is going - without the mystery of Luke's recent past. There is zero atmosphere in the movie - no drama whatsoever.

Johnson admitted it himself that he wrote sequences or scenes that he wanted to have in the movie and then formulated a narrative around them.
So basically there is no story arc - no progression for the trilogy. Just some sequences that were dreamed up to get a response on first or second viewing.
Instant gratification movie making - bad writing. I don't care if Rey is a nobody (actually quite liked it - once) I don't care if Luke dies (as long as it was handled well and has the depth it deserves) - but none of it was done properly or with any consideration for the movies that come before and after.
Anyway - enough TLJ - lets hope JJ can fix something in IX.

I like it. They could do an awesome aged make-up job on old Rey for the opening sequence. She could be totally ranting on about the force and look genderless like old Sarah Connor, but then is tragically cut down by her son, Luke. Yes, a new Luke.

latest

Except this new Luke is like early thirties and never really left home, like a neckbeard who has a "problem" with Finn and the fact that there's only broom-girls. In his room he does a lot of holo-projection to get his twisted avatar's views out there. But it all comes down to him.:yess:

Cue Darth Vader "NNooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOO" from the Revenge of The Sith and you have a new trilogy. When can I expect my paycheck from Disney?

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

How does Poe know Maz?

The plot holes and script contrivances in the movie are so idiotic.
And watching that Farthier ‘chase’ through canto bight. Jesus what a mess. As bad as the worst part of the prequels, but in 2017.

Myself and my wife started to pause the Holdo and Poe scenes to count the number of women v men in each shot. It’s hilariously unsubtle.
At one point when Poe confronts Holdo there are 5 women around him and no men, we get the point KK. But this makes zero sense in the context of the story.
And Holdo’s interaction with Poe is aggressive and condescending. Completely illogical to make a sexism point. Where was she a few hours ago?

Poe is treated like an idiot - yet a few hours before this he saved EVERYONE by blowing up the star killer base. The time lines in this movie are so badly written.

Lots of great points, but nothing can penetrate the shields of the TLJ lovers to make them think anything other than the movie is spectacular and those who don't agree are lady haters, trolls, and man babies crying about their childhoods. :monkey3

This is what I mean about people here making better points than mainstream critics. I have no idea how Poe would know Maz or have her holo-digits. :lol
They probly should have thrown a line at that. :lol

Hmmm.... I guess in Galaxy Far Far Away they also have inequality issues and suffer from male chauvinism. Maybe that's why it seems there's not many men who joined Leia's Resistance or came to her aid during TLJ. :wink1:

Anyone else curious as to how Rey is going to get a new lightsaber? Are we to just assume the books she stole will have instructions or how to's? A wiki perhaps.

I think she's just going to tell the broken saber to repair itself and it will. (She's not all powerful though so she might have to repeat the command a couple times before it finally complies.)

Might as well do it that way at this point :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Finally got a chance to watch TLJ again last night, and I have to say I am more impressed with many story directions Johnson chose to take which will account for a great deal of growth for characters in episode 9, should Abrahms follow the set course.

While TLJ was primarily Rey and Luke's movie, I think the most growth will come from The secondary characters. Many people felt Poe, Finn and Rose's storyline was pointless, but I disagree. Their story led them to make choices that were nearly catastrophic for the Resistance, because they chose to not trust their leadership and take matters into their own hands, and ultimately mutiny, leading to the almost total decimation of the Resistance. Had Holdo's plan been allowed to unfurl without Poe and Finn interfering, the Resistance would have snuck away, taking refuge on the mineral planet leaving the FO to continue chasing the flag ship. This failure, I think will especially help to groom Poe into becoming more of a leader in the following film.

I also enjoyed how Ben Solo is shown as being not all black or white. I think his story shows how even good people can be lousy parents. Kylo is a severely damaged person, his parents probably more occupied by trying to rebuild the republic, rather than be attentive parents. His dark thoughts, which everybody has from time to time, led to what appeared to be the ultimate betrayal by his Uncle. What other direction could his character realistically take? Abandoned or betrayed by his family, he succumbed to the machinations of Snoke.

I actually found the lack of a cliffhanger to be refreshing, it gives a lot of room to the characters and story, as it's less clear what their next step in the Story is, the next step that I will be eager to see in the next movie.

Not new thoughts really, but just thinking about it more since watching it last night.

I would kill for a 1/6th Scale Hot Toys “Rose” figure.

*said no one ever*

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Also major lore breakers:

Luke wearing ceremonial Jedi robes even though he had cut himself off from the Force and abandoned the Jedi ways. Mark Hamill said this was because JJ Abrams had a different vision for Luke's character.

Luke providing a map to his location even though he didn't want to be found.

That's a total of 4 off the top.

Lots of failure and growth.
