Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Finally got a chance to watch TLJ again last night, and I have to say I am more impressed with many story directions Johnson chose to take which will account for a great deal of growth for characters in episode 9, should Abrahms follow the set course.

While TLJ was primarily Rey and Luke's movie, I think the most growth will come from The secondary characters. Many people felt Poe, Finn and Rose's storyline was pointless, but I disagree. Their story led them to make choices that were nearly catastrophic for the Resistance, because they chose to not trust their leadership and take matters into their own hands, and ultimately mutiny, leading to the almost total decimation of the Resistance. Had Holdo's plan been allowed to unfurl without Poe and Finn interfering, the Resistance would have snuck away, taking refuge on the mineral planet leaving the FO to continue chasing the flag ship. This failure, I think will especially help to groom Poe into becoming more of a leader in the following film.

I also enjoyed how Ben Solo is shown as being not all black or white. I think his story shows how even good people can be lousy parents. Kylo is a severely damaged person, his parents probably more occupied by trying to rebuild the republic, rather than be attentive parents. His dark thoughts, which everybody has from time to time, led to what appeared to be the ultimate betrayal by his Uncle. What other direction could his character realistically take? Abandoned or betrayed by his family, he succumbed to the machinations of Snoke.

I actually found the lack of a cliffhanger to be refreshing, it gives a lot of room to the characters and story, as it's less clear what their next step in the Story is, the next step that I will be eager to see in the next movie.

Not new thoughts really, but just thinking about it more since watching it last night.

:lecture

Lots of failure and growth.

Yes, failures, messy victories, decisions with open ended consequences. Very fascinating to watch all that unfold in a SW flick. And the fact that it wasn't a cliffhanger, that major characters *were* killed and that it wasn't all just a token setup for the next film just for the sake of padding a trilogy, that all makes it even more "rewatchable" for me so to each his own.

Anyone else curious as to how Rey is going to get a new lightsaber? Are we to just assume the books she stole will have instructions or how to's? A wiki perhaps.

she already knows how to build one from her mind. she doesnt even need the Jedi books
in the next movie we will learn she already KNEW everything in the books.

shes gonna burn them because she already knew all that info inside her mind

...that certainly has nothing to do with what I said.

You called the generic good guys vs. bad guys plot loaded with plot holes and random decisions with no true direction "fascinating".

After part 3 the F13 sequels are completely gratuitous with no direction

It totally does. :dunno

Nope that's not what I said so I guess my post was too "cerebral" for you. :)

The only way they can support their feelings is to either twist the meaning of your words or intentionally obfuscate your point altogether. I mean, they can't be that dense, right?

Yeah, after browsing the movie threads today it might be sabbatical time. The lolz are weak and debate/discussion are no fun if you have to teach people how to do it.

Best to let it be the echo chamber it wants to be.

Rey who?? I don't understand the reference. Was she a character I missed somewhere in the OT & PT movies? :wink1:

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Rey will just build one, or spontaneously birth one.

Humor is definitely more fun than what the truth in Johnson's mind would've been.

She doesn't need to bother to learn how to build one. Waste of time. She'll have Lukes green ROTJ lightsaber since she obviously goes back to ach-oo to continue to study and dedicate years of time to learning the origins of the force just as Luke did. The space nuns will give it to her after they mourn the loss of their sad and depressed adopted little boy. :monkey3

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Do you mean how Luke hid a part of his map so no one could find him or how he doesn’t need to be connected to the force to wear his old robes?
Right. He hid it in R2 who voluntarily handed it right over in defiance of his master.

And sure. Luke wearing ceremonial Jedi robes are just his wear-around-the-house clothes.
