The only thing that didn't pan out was to kill off Han Solo -- to have him make the ultimate sacrifice. Which he should have, given his character. Would have given "Jedi" some extra weight and drama. But Lucas didn't want to upset the kiddies. Same kiddies he made Ewoks for.

I'm glad they didn't, because the dramatic weight of a scene like that would be utterly ruined by a cavorting Ewok.

Even as a 12 year old, I hated those Ewoks.

It was so obvious Leia was his sister as soon as Leia chose Han instead of Luke sexually -- plus both in white, plus both names start with "L". Deductive reasoning.

I truly don't remember anyone thinking it was Han Solo that was "the other", despite the fact that it wasn't officially revealed that Luke and Leia were related. You can't say back in 1980 NOBODY knew -- because I was there and I did.

That was one of the disappointments of "Jedi" -- Luke and Leia being brother and sister came as no great surprise to anyone I knew.

There was speculation. I remember there were stories comparing SW to Greek mythology and how it would be consistent with classic storytelling.

I just thought it was a lame way to resolve a love triangle. "Hmm, I don't want Luke's fans to think Leia is a ***** for choosing Han. I know! I'll make them brother and sister!"

Splinter of the Mind's Eye was published in 78 or 79, and It became known later that it had been the "Plan B" for a SW sequel if Harrison Ford didn't return. Anyone who's read that book knows the choice to make them siblings came later.

Also if the original had bombed. GL's reasoning was that it would't cost much to depict a mist-shrounded planet in a low-budget sequel.

That explains everything. :monkey4

Lucas just didn't want to give it away in that terrible book. I believe the idea was an early one for him. As opposed to many others.

In any event, you may have been surprised, but not everyone was back then. The "father" bit was the only one that truly worked. Because it went directly against what was said in ANH.

I didn't read the whole debate about the PT between its fans and its critics, but I did see people mention a cut that combines all three into one movie. I've watched this. It is good:

Any cut of the prequels will be limited by the source material to edit. So is this the best the prequels could have been? Probably not. But I did find it much more satisfying all around.

The funny thing about that is "vater" is german for "father", so if you were german the whole thing was a big "duh!"

That's true... and what a strange coincidence because I'm a firm believer that the 'father' bit came after the creation of "Dark/Death Invader's" name. But on that I could be wrong. But I think Lucas just got lucky with that one.

Don't worry, my money is on him dying in TFA.

I wouldn't mind a "special edition" of the PT that tightened up some of the editing, restored some of the better deleted scenes, and maybe even ditched some scenes like AOTC's droid foundry sequence, which Lucas admitted was an afterthought. So long as the original intent was still there I'd be fine with it.

My theory is that Solo is killed by Kylo Ren, who I am guessing is his son. Episode 8 I could see Luke/Leia sacrificing themselves to save Rey. Then come Episode 9 it is Brother vs Sister, Rey vs Kylo as the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance.

Then comes Episodes 10-12. :lol
