I remember my gf had some art classes, the professors would make her buy up to 50 materials but would end up using 15....
Thank god she had the receipt to return all that crap :lol

Tell me about it. I did one semester and then started the second, and just dropped it. I was getting annoyed that the bulk of my income was going towards this useless ****. I dropped it and just went to work full time. Anyone I was close to in High School that went to college aren't doing any better than I am.

College is all kinds of freedom. For the first time in your 18 yr old life no one is telling you what to do, when to do it, when to sleep, when to eat, where to go, what to study, when to watch tv, bathe. It's the first time for many people that that have adult autonomy in their lives. Not only that, you surrounded by 1000s of people your own age who are experiencing the same thing. And youre all likely a thousand miles away from anyone who would interfere in your decisions. IMO college is a life experience beyond just studying and degrees. The social componet is unmatched imo.

At least one thing Mr. Green don't like is those Physics or even Calculus class. It's a community college for beginners. He get those professor who always put one crazy hard problem that very few, maybe 1-2, would get. You would have to get everything else perfectly right to get an "A" from 90 score, lol. And that include getting the extra credit right. He would take out points from missing marks/symbol even though the answer is right, at the end. Take a day class at the second campus and Mr. Green got an "A" easy. Sure he have to still use all equation and think but achievable. These professor think these students are going to be future NASA engineer or something, lol. A huge majority of these student who take and pass this class won't even get to use it.

College has always been a place to engage in intellectual exploration. Thats why they let you make your own choices- like classes and a major. And in that exploration you can decide for yourself what you like and dont like. It's still very much about the pursuit of knowledge. The subject of that knowledge is a different subject.

It's not meant to be a place to learn about hvac repair or operating a crane. Thats why those choices are not available in traditional colleges, but they are offered elsewhere. Conversely, you wont study Descartes or the cold war in trade school.

But i could see some colleges offering tech classes in the name of the pursuing knowledge. Again, it's a choice.

I wrote a whole post and then disagreed with myself haha so I'll try again. I'm not anti-education, I hold advanced degrees and I certainly agree that college is a great place to expand your learning base but over $250k to do so isn't a wise decision, you'll never make your money back.

Having art classes, drama, etc are great to build up a base but you're better off learning on your own or going to a specialty school instead of paying $65k+ per year for four years.

Must be great being rich.

Amazing, no responsibility, live in a dorm, study philosophy, eat anything while daddy takes care of everything.

Dont forget the 1 year the 18 year old takes off to travel europe with his friends. What a great life

Yeah i was living it up. With my mother working as a telephone operator (back when there was such a thing) the sky was the limit. And the gravey train really got to rolling when she worked holidays and the graveyard shift.

But i didnt have to take out any loans. No sir. Not one. Thank God because it would have taken me 12 years to pay off. No loans at all. Not with mom bringing in the big bucks. As a telephone operator.

I had to learn the hard way that my gender studies degree was pointless :lol

That's the problem right there.....no enough talk on entry to college about what degrees are actually useful.

If you goto college for a useful degree you will get a job and have cash to pay those enormous student loans....

If you study art, music , philosophy, sociology or any other non essential degree, well you screwed and someone should have told you those are BS (Bull****) degrees.

Again , engineering, medical , legal, accounting will all find you with a decent job post grad if you worked hard.

Self-discovery comes with socializing with your peers, and allowing yourself to grow as you experience new things in life. You don't necessarily have to go to college to have that, just don't lead a boring, routine life, and you'll have a lot of stories to tell.

scholarships, cash, work study, and loans.

I worked freshman yr in the cafeteria mopping floors, cleaning tables, making sandwiches. Along with about 1,000 other kids. Turns out not everyone in college is rich! Who knew?

After fresh yr I got a job in the library.

I took out a what I now know to be a moderate sum in loans. Took me 12 yrs to repay.

Trades are for the unlazy respectable crowd. People who seek trades know what they want out of life, make good money, and are the backbone of society. Without trades there wouldnt be colleges around for lazy, self entitled, debt collecting, garbage personality, man and women babies to squander their lives in. Only a small percentage of intelligent people who make the correct moves use college to their advantage and get a proper career from it. Buck the **** up and get your hands dirty and stop being such ******* gambling on easy street. I swear most people dont even have callouses on their hands anymore.

College is a place for you to get a degree, which will hopefully, make you more employable in your future. Trade schools are generally marketed as a cheap option to people in the workforce who're looking for changes in their careers. It's also marketed to high school kids, and college dropouts who never managed well academically.

And it's a damn shame they are marketed that way. Skilled tradesman make just as much if not more than many college graduates with associate and bachelor degrees.

It really is. Some people are just better with hands-on, practical applications, than sitting in a classroom. A college degree in a STEM science will make people more marketable, but it's not a guarantee that they'll see those higher wages. I'm a mechanical engineer, and I'm still searching for a higher paying job :lol. Granted, I'm a lot better off than I was a few years ago, and at least I'm not struggling to pay the bills now.

Taken from the bureau of labor statistics for 2016 if you believe it:

HS only- $692 wk., unemployment rate 5.2%
college only- $1156 wk., 2.7%
Professional degree- $1745 wk., 1.6%

Quick google search supports the findings that college grads almost always make more than non college grads. Thats just math.

That's not to say one is a better person than the other, or who's a harder worker, or who is more patriotic, or loves their kids more.

I haven't read through all of the posts here, but I will say this:

From elementary school to middle school to high school to college, I hated them all. The only thing you really learn is that at least 60% of your peers are douches. :lecture

That's it for me, bye-bye. :wave

I hated college and unfortunately time has not made me look back on it differently. And I think I would be even less capable of studying now than I was then. Just reading a course prospectus either puts me to sleep or fills me with dread :(

I'm speaking specifically of tradesman. I think you would see those numbers tighten considerably. And I am also talking about associates and bachelors degrees, not masters.
