If Garfield can come off as less emo/obnoxious in this film, he might be able to own this character. As much as I would like to pretend 3 never happened, Tobey did end his tenure badly so Garfield has a shot. At least he'd make a decent HT figure with the new costume.

awkward is a word to apply to both.
But, IMO, Garfield's was intentional and "acted". Maguire's was an attribute of himself as a person.

Most of the greats have roles like that. Eastwood, Nicholson, Pacino, Redford, etc., have all made careers out of it and won awards for it.
