Yes, and as you can see if you look the proportions compared to his shoulder width, the mask/helmet still is 'big'.

True, but that's not really a good argument considering that helmet was scratch-made after ANH. It's completely different than the ANH version.

Re: Vader has left the building!!

Man, I hope SS gives us a ESB 1/6th Vader so we don't have to deal with this big head/little head crap!!!!

The PF Vader looks awesome.

Re: Vader has left the building!!

And at some point you have to ask - "Is more accurate really what you want?" If the head is smaller on the PF, it just might have been done for aesthetic reasons. The bigger head could very well look a bit silly. You could argue that it's more "iconic" even if less accurate (and I'm not yet convinced it is).

Re: Vader has left the building!!

As far as size goes, here are some excellent comparisons of the real ANH suit:

Note the guy working on Vader's hands and head compared to the helmet. The helmet is HUGE:

Promotional photo comparison of ANH Vader helmet to his body. Somebody knocked the dome out of place. LOL

Big head Vader walking down the hallway. Note all the diminished cape size compared to the SS version:

Finally, this last one is just for fun simply because I LOVE how it looks. This is an up close shot of the ANH helmet from the Tantive. It's a different helmet than the one from the duel, but the imperfections/weathering on it are so cool. That's what the OT is about to me. The Stormtroopers, Vader, the lightsabers, etc. were all old and beaten up. It's a shame that all the statues and replicas are so bright and shiny unlike the originals. No additional comments are needed on this beauty:

Re: Vader has left the building!!

Looks like in that promotional shot the helmet doesn't have the widow's peak. So a few of the ANH helmets did look like that?

Re: Vader has left the building!!

Elwood the guy working on that Vader helmet is like 6' and the guy who played Vader was like what 6'10. Not a good example IMO.

I actually would trust CK's judgment on Vader much more than anything coming out of Lucas's mouth. Do you think Lucas knows the difference between the ANH, ESB, and ROTJ helmets? Hell no! Based on CK's posts here and on the RPF, I'm quite confident that he knows more about the Vader helmet than Lucas himself. Most of the original people who worked on Vader have long since left ILM (one of them posts on the RPF as a matter of fact). The people who "made the movie" aren't even there anymore.

Do you know if Lucas does or doesn't? Hell NO! I'll go with Lucas over any fan and that's no shot at CK at all. He seems to know what he is talking about.

As shown in previous screen grabs, the ANH version is just as large.

If you think about it, the large size makes perfect sense and is not silly at all. Imagine the size of your head. Now imagine placing a padded armored mask and dome helmet over it. Of course, the overall 'head' is going to appear larger than your body! Infact, it makes you wonder about the small Sideshow Vader head. How would a human adult sized head ever fit in there? Sure, Anakin's hair and skin were burned off. But his head didn't shrink!

That's a keenly perceptive observation, elwood49.

One of the elements that made Star Wars unique in it's time was its cobbled together, wear-and-tear approach to art and set direction.

Re: Vader has left the building!!

While I know the helmet is not perfect, I think a big problem is with the cape (as Cking mentioned earlier).

It's just too big or not positioned correctly in most pics I have seen.

Once I receive mine, I will try and display it so it's not so big and distracting.

The helmet looks fairly big in this shot:

Re: Vader has left the building!!

Huzzah!! My Vader status has been updated to "shipping soon" in my account! Maybe I did manage to squeak into the first wave after all. Soon he will be mine--in all of his helmeted glory!!!

Re: Vader has left the building!!

I trust Sideshow to have made the best of efforts to get this being the best figure of Vader around. So I can't wait to get mine and make my own mind up! :banana

Psycho

Re: Vader has left the building!!

Oh, also, are these figures numbered?

I've only owned the LoTRs polystone statues and I'm not sure what to expect from these.

The redline indicates where I measured, straight around.

Dave, I've measured my full size helmet casting around the red line as you've indicated on your photo. The measurement I get is 32.5 inches.
This works out to be 8.125 inches at 1/4 scale.

He's 6'7" actually. If that guy is if fact 6', then he perfectly illustrates my example. Harrison Ford is 6'1", which is the comparison we've been making this entire time (Han 1/4 head/hand size vs. Vader 1/4 head/hand size).

Han should compare favorably to the man in the photograph.

I agree!

I'm wondering, of the people who ordered the PF Vader, who will end up letting Vader's helmet bother them so much that they won't be able to look at it? Will they put it away and then have the helmet call to them like the "Tell-Tale Heart"?

I'm thinking that once most people have this thing in their homes and are able to look at it in person all of the stupid debate about helmet size, bulky cape, etc. will cease. Hopefully people will just admire the statue for what it is......a beautiful piece of Star Wars memorabila.

That seems to be the case as we speak. Many who have received their statue are more than happy with it, and the online pics have convinced many to try and get this piece at any cost. A handful of people, who have never even seen this piece in person, won't change the great reception this piece has had. The item is still sold out, it is now arriving and people want it BAD!! It's just too cool to pass up. I sincerely hope that those who wanted one get one or at least able to obtain one in the future.

As for the whole cking/Lucas "who's knows more" debate, WHO CARES! I don't take either's word as gospel, and, ultimately, will always go with what I like.

tomandshell, that is good that you've been charged from your 2/19 order. Mine was place on the 18th, so I may have been charged as well. I just hope that my case arrives before or close to when my definitive Vader does. :)

I'm even thinking of having a small get-together for the arrival of this piece. How sad is that!! ;) :D
