I've known nurses who work in psych. wards, nursing homes, primary care offices, and emergency rooms. All had ____ty jobs. They work like dogs. As for why you're doing it, I guess a guy can get up in the morning and feel great about picking up garbage or being a janitor or whatever, but it's still a ____ty job IMO.

Interesting. Do they consider their jobs ____ty, or do you as an outsider consider it ____ty? I've met very few nurses that didn't love their jobs.

Even though I've had lots of collegiate education, I never considered myself superior to those who don't or whatever, nor do my peers with similar education levels that I talk to or work with. Do I expect more money for an entry level position, seeing as how I have a specialized skill set and have invested a fair amount of time and money into achieving my degree? Sure, but you would probably feel the same if you had all the opportunity costs incurred alongside spending 10 years or so in college. But some of these posts read to me like folks who have a chip on their shoulder. Not that it matters to me. If you get off on trying to humiliate college grads and "putting them in their place," good for you.

I considered it ____ty :lol Some of them did like it, but I guess I don't have the interest or personality required to get into that field. In fact, I know I don't. I hate whiny _____ patients.

If your in any sort of technical field, you'll hit a ceiling/salary cap real soon without a degree.

Thats very true, half of my friends went to college, the other half did not. Hell my best friend didn't, I still love him, but he's not doing well no matter how happy he pretends to be.

The half that did are all getting really good jobs right now, in long term relationships, have their own place etc.

The ones that didn't at 25, have reached the highest posistions they can get to in their jobs and have no where to go and nothing to look forward to for the rest of their careers there, have trac phones, collect unemployment, or live with the successful ones and are always late on rent.

You don't need college to be successful in life, unless the job you want requires it. There are many jobs that don't require it and pay well. The thing is most people who drop out of school are lazy and don't want to do different things. There is always opportunity, the difference is whether you have the drive to try something new. Maybe it's hard to find jobs in the US, but there are lots of great paying jobs here in Canada that lead to careers even without a diploma, of course it will hold you back in many fields, but you won't be a bum if you don't want to be, and if you play your cards right you can still make more then someone with a college education.

well i guess i'm screwed then. you guys missed my point. i wasn't ragging on education. i was trying to say that a degree is not a special card that will lead you to the big bucks. i see too many people drop thousands on college and never find a job cuz they have no ambition or skills. i was just trying to use myself as an example that if you work hard you can make it without a piece of paper signed by a dean. don't just try to take courses cuz you want $$$. if it was that easy everybody would be doctors and lawyers. but what do i know right.

Paid way too much for my BFA which I do not use and am paying for years later.

Back in school for an AS, which I know I will use as I have found my passion. And I'm lucky or fortunate to be heading into a field which is growing and offers substantial compensation.

I'm so stoked to finally be on my way to a profession in which I have the potential to help many people.

Do what you love. Absolutely! :D

That is a good point. Unfortunately, lots of basic, entry level jobs require a college education nowadays, but once you're there, it's really an equal playing field. But some jobs (engineering, medical technology, and yes, nursing being some examples) require specific collegiate degrees and are in such demand that it really doesn't take much more than getting the right degree. But some out there (self included) didn't go to college for the "right" reasons, and ended up with degrees in literature, philosophy, the social sciences, etc., and unless you get a Masters or Ph.D. in those fields you're just gonna be competing with every other shlub out there for some lame, generic job. And even if you do get a post-graduate degree, it might not help you too much. :lol But there are more reasons for going to college than just trying to get paid vast sums of money.

BFA in photography. :wave

Live and learn. I have a great eye, but you've got to be extremely gregarious and self-promoting to make it there.

Sadly, doing what you love doesn't always pay the bills or feed your family. Trades always seem to pay well. I was going to suggest welding, too. Had dinner last night with a couple whose son is almost a journeyman welder at 19 years old. They said he will probably be making six figures in a few years. I don't know what your situation is, but maybe learn a trade, then try to take a contract in the middle east for a short time. I can imagine leaving family/kids would be very difficult, but desperate times call for desperate measures, or so they say.
Good luck!

(My dad is an electrician for an oil refinery, I think he makes more than $70k).

Your photo of Liberace has kept me going for the past two years. :lol

I haven't the slightest clue what you're talking about. :dunno

Irony is, this is completely relevant to the thread because someone already has a music degree. :monkey3

we have fresh college grads that come into our workplace all the time. they think they know everything and are better than everybody else. in actuality they are about as dumb as a pile of rocks. i love correcting their errors and reminding them that they have an expensive college degree and i don't. that really gets them flustered.

We have older people at my workspace that may or may not have gone to college but they have been their so long they think they know everything and are better than everyone else because they have been stuck at the same job their whole life. I love correcting their errors and reminding them that my starting salary is what they are making currently.

I wonder how many of them know how to capitalize. :lol

LMAO :rotfl:lol

sweet i struck a nerve.:yess:

i knew everyone would get on my case about not capitalizing sentences. they always do. next i'll get the slams about the figures in my avatar and sig. go ahead. i can take it.

it is what it is. i just live my life. people put too much stock in education and salary levels.

We like to call those people "successful"
