@ Dracula,
Just like you say "humans arent born racist, this and that" and that they learn to do those things because of society and their circunstances (perhaps economically).
However the same way the learn to hate or learn a faith, they ALSO are taught (and i am sure in almost 99% of the homes around the world they teach this) that KILLING someone is completely wrong and one of the worst things one can do. Despite knowing this, they let their emotions, lack of judgement, stupidity, etc etc etc, get in the way and take them to commit this atrocious act.
There is absolutely NO reason why a killer should not be punished by death. That is a "killer" and not a "mentally ill" person.
The difference betwen the two is that, for obvious reasons, a mentally Ill person sometimes cant really control what is going on with them, for example a person with severe OCD; they have this intrusive thoughts and they must do the rituals to feel better or for that matter the riturals become automatic compulsions. The person suffering from this disorder can start suffering from depression, anger and think his or her life is a living hell because of that "demon" doing shiet with their head.
So a person with such a condition, must be understood that might not be in their right state of mind because they cant even control their own thoughts that are driving them insane.
But for someone who purposedly killed people or whom did illegal drugs and was under the influence and killed people, it is still an act that deserves the most harsh punishment. If you take a life, your life is the only thing that can equal to what you have done.
And trust me, that bullcrap about "oh but i didnt know what i was doing cuz i had too much beer or drugs" well guess what, there is a reason why the drugs are illegal, you MADE the desicion to incurr in those activities and must take responsibility.
So basically for me the only real way to forgive these murderors is if mental ilness is 100% proven with very carefull observation and studies done to the offender.

Setting aside the whole barbarism argument (which, as was said before, seems to be the only thing people can take to heart and respond to nowadays), Dracula's other main point is that killing this guy won't bring peace to the families of the victims. To that I ask one question: who are you to say what will bring peace to them and what won't? I didn't realize we had a psychic on this board.

Now I'm really out. :)

Swift justice and punishment.

Humane treament for whom???

Not the people who were shot down in cold blood. Their lives are nil. Yet, the man who rendered them as such can continue with his own.

Bull____. Fat sacks of it.

No matter how awful this man's crimes he still has basic Constitutional rights including a right to a fair trial by jury and freedom from cruel and unusual punishment.

Reasonable people debate the whether the later includes the death penalty. I tend to have mixed feelings on the subject but am not condemning people for supporting that option. But some of you sound exactly like a lynch mob.

Harris is a respected author, known most for his works on atheism. He is not some huckster selling self-help books or asking you to join some group. His talks are just like any non-fiction author promoting their work, not "jedi mind trick".

I am not an atheist, but I consider him a reasonable and intelligent person whose sometimes provocative opinion is worth considering. That does not mean you have to agree with him, but your attack on him is simply infantile.

if you take a life,

consciously take a life, knowingly, maliciously take a life

you don't deserve to live

and your life should be taken away as well,
is simple,

There is no justification for it, and by trying to it only makes it seem like you sympathize with them.

So I read the quotes you provided. They are not "justifications", merely attempts to explain of how a person becomes a murderer. I disagree with those explanations, but it is unfair to characterise them as a defence of the killer.

Whether they could be interpreted as such is one thing but I really don't think Dracula intended them as a defence of the killer. He stated that that wasn't his intention and I see no reason to call him a liar. We're all on the same team here, we only disagree as to what should happen to the killer now.

Why? Because of the Bill of Rights.

Are you saying you oppose the 5th, 6th and 8th Amendments?

They don't like baby killers in prison. He might not have much more life to live regardless of what sentence is given.

no but i am saying if the crime is murder and it is obvious that the persons is guilty, then there shouldnt be any rights for that person.
because of our "system" many guilty people have walked out and innocents have been locked in. something must be done.
