Here is a currious question. I wonder how many of the members of the " mace won 'cause he's a bad ass" side of the equation are saying so becuase mace is Samuel L. Jackson? Alot of people Are real big fans of his, and his "hero status" as an actor possibly holds some sway in this regaurd.

I voted him by what I saw in the movie. A defeated Sidous at the feet of Mace.

What's next, are people going to start saying the Terminator let Sarah Connor crush him?

Do we know for a fact Yoda > Mace? I always considered them about equal (Mace's size and strength making up for any Force deficiencies)

Since Yoda had been practicing being a Jedi for about 800 years longer than Mace, I would say, Yes, Yoda was definitely stronger than Mace.

I think it comes down to this, Mace won the duel. I can concede to that point. HOWEVER, Palpatine still won the war. It was clearly a duel to the death, and Palpatine was the one who walked away. Mace won, but it's an empty victory.
Even then, I don't think Palpatine WANTED to Kill Mace. I think it was allways his intent to get anakin to do it, or atleast help.
Killing, or assisting in killing one of the senior members of the jedi council would seem, to anakin to be a terrible action. One that could mean his death at the hands of his jedi order. Especialy if Mace was about to kill Palpatine for simply BEING a sith lord, as opposed to bringing him to justice in the courts.

Lets assume for a moment that Palpatine is Stronger than Mace ( We already know he is, but for those of you who choose to ignore this, just pretend a moment) Just becuase Mace is not stronger, does not mean he can't win in a fair fight. Think David and Golliath.
I have not read the noveliseation of ROTS, but from what I'm reading, it seems to back that up. " he was looking for palpatines shatterpoint, and could not find it" statement. If mace needed to look for a week point to strike, Then it's a safe bet that he was having trouble with his opponent.
Were he the stronger fighter, the fight would of lasted nowhere near as long as it did.
That's all I've got for now, the drugs and the flu are kicking the hell out of me for me to make too much more sense...

But on a final note:

Vapaad is non-cannon.

Forget the shatterpoint stuff. Palpatine had intended on killing the Jedi that came for him. He wanted Anakin to see the bodies and convince him they were finished and his only chance would be to join him. The only way for him to save Padme.
On the other hand, had Anakin stayed away Mace would have finished Palpatine, Anakin's life would have stabilized and he could have found his true potential. Eventually leading the council and balancing the Force without the bloodshed.

IMO.

Lucas confirmed that Yoda and Palpatine are the most powerful Force user in an interview to Empire Magazine.

That would never happen. The prophecy says Anakin will bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith. If Mace kills Palpatine then the prophecy is false and we know it is not.

We never read a prophecy, we only heard descriptions of it. The Jedi interpreted it to mean destroying the Sith.
Remember in TPM the Jedi thought the Sith were extinct.

The Force was going to use Anakin to balance the Force, it didn't say how. It could have been peacefully or violently like the films.
