$84.8 weekend is the bad news. An A Cinemascore is the good news.
Really thought it would hit 100 million, but that's better than any of the LOTR films and the best December opening. So not a bad start.

Only in this day and age is $85 million over a weekend 'bad news.' I don't give a hoot about the first weekend. Let's see if this plays over weekend 2, 3, etc. Legs - its about the stamina than the initial weekend pissing contest where studios want to declare it 'the biggest deal since bread' kinda headlines

You know, I doubt even that will do it.
We need a poll to see if The Hobbit is going to be the most hated on movie of the year. Can it beat TDKR?
I've already run into a ton of people who have their noses turned up so high at this movie that you can see little pearly gates in their nostrils.
Figures. Everyone is miserable about everything. Not much fun to be had on Sideshow Freaks.
If you want to compare this to LotR, you have to go with the Fellowship totals since both were part ones and Fellowship opening weekend was $47 million whereas The Hobbit made $37 million on Friday alone. This is domestically in the US totals right now.
We have to wait till part three to compare it to RotK.
It's just way too early to predict anything.
Fellowship was in theaters for 34 weeks! I don't think they keep movies in theaters that long anymore. They want to cash in on the DVD sales now. The Avengers was in for 22 weeks which I think nowadays is pretty long.
"Fundamentally flawed" is the most overused phrase around here. When exactly did it become so popular.
It annoys me.
That is all.
My point was that it was bad news within the context of what this thread is asking. I personally think $85 is a good opening.
I'd care about box office totals for The Hobbit if,
A. I got a cut of the dough (I'm not)
B. Potential sequels depended on box office success (sequels are coming anyway unlike poor Dredd)
So I say, who gives a ****?
Avengers and TDKR are old news now that they've come out on blu ray and dvd.
Apparently box office is the method by which some fandom groups compare their wiener sizes.

Titanic fans don't have wieners.
Sequels are the only reason to root for Box Office intake.
Which is why Dredd pains me so much.
