Only in this day and age is $85 million over a weekend 'bad news.' I don't give a hoot about the first weekend. Let's see if this plays over weekend 2, 3, etc. Legs - its about the stamina than the initial weekend pissing contest where studios want to declare it 'the biggest deal since bread' kinda headlines

Alot of people I know are going to see it over Christmas since they don't care for other movies that are out then.

Comparing it to FOTR is fundamentally flawed

FOTR was the first time this world was introduced on film, it's only captive audience was fans of the books and fans of Peter Jackson

This time the captive audience is everyone who ever saw the LOTR trilogy

Massive difference

But comparing it to RotK isn't any better.

Thing is its starting off better than any of them money wise and with a strong word of mouth based on the cinema score it should be ok as far as matching ROTK at worst. We'll know more just money wise after next weekend.

Just saw this today. To answer the op question, I would think hell no. All 3 of the Lotr movies were FAR better IMO. This movie is kind of a snoozer at a couple parts.

Always keep in mind some of the best grossing movies of all times didn't have mega opening weekends.

Yea, well, I can't say I would tell anyone this is a must see like avengers and tdkr. That's what it comes down to for me,

I'd care about box office totals for The Hobbit if,

A. I got a cut of the dough (I'm not)

B. Potential sequels depended on box office success (sequels are coming anyway unlike poor Dredd)

So I say, who gives a ****?

I agree. WB has already invested $600 million into the Hobbit trilogy, the Dark Knight series is over with The Avengers guaranteed to be a Disney cash cow for a long time coming. I'd love to see Avatar and Titanic knocked out of the top spots but couldn't care less about who comes out on top between The Avengers, TDKR, and The Hobbit.

So far Hobbit made over 220 million worldwide...not too shabby for opening weekend!

That's a good start. As one of the articles said December movies tend to stay stronger longer because of the Holidays. Now, The Hobbit has nothing against it this week but does have Les Mes (which I'm looking forward to) and Django (which I'm looking forward to) coming up.

:lol :lecture

I think The Hobbit will play out like a Twillight movie. Big opening and then 50%+ drops a week ending it's run with between $250-300 mill.

:cuckoo:

The general public love talking trolls and wizards with bird **** running down their face. This pushes past the $600 mil domestic mark with ease.

You sure that was bird ****? :lol

I don't see it getting anywhere near that level. $300 mill tops.
