It is possible. But we shall see.
Figures. Everyone is miserable about everything. Not much fun to be had on Sideshow Freaks.
Only in this day and age is $85 million over a weekend 'bad news.' I don't give a hoot about the first weekend. Let's see if this plays over weekend 2, 3, etc. Legs - its about the stamina than the initial weekend pissing contest where studios want to declare it 'the biggest deal since bread' kinda headlines
Comparing it to FOTR is fundamentally flawed
FOTR was the first time this world was introduced on film, it's only captive audience was fans of the books and fans of Peter Jackson
This time the captive audience is everyone who ever saw the LOTR trilogy
Massive difference
But comparing it to RotK isn't any better.
I'd care about box office totals for The Hobbit if,
A. I got a cut of the dough (I'm not)
B. Potential sequels depended on box office success (sequels are coming anyway unlike poor Dredd)
So I say, who gives a ****?
Apparently box office is the method by which some fandom groups compare their wiener sizes.
So far Hobbit made over 220 million worldwide...not too shabby for opening weekend!

I think The Hobbit will play out like a Twillight movie. Big opening and then 50%+ drops a week ending it's run with between $250-300 mill.
The general public love talking trolls and wizards with bird **** running down their face. This pushes past the $600 mil domestic mark with ease.
You sure that was bird ****?
I don't see it getting anywhere near that level. $300 mill tops.
Icy water frostbite
Check the batteries on your sarcasm detector, sir.
