Just saw the film. It’s actually an amazing Deadpool movie. Stands out like a sore thumb in amongst the MCU. Especially of late. It’s truly a spectacular experience. As entertained as I’ve been from beginning to end in an MCU film for quite some time. However I’m still sitting here a few hours after seeing it wondering how on earth Feige can claim that this was an 8 out of 10 in terms of impact for the MCU… when he said endgame was a 10 in comparison… um… no. But don’t let that diminish how good this movie is…
The music is excellent, omg the music is excellent. I ordered the vinyl straight away. The fight choreography is as good as I’ve seen in the MCU, obviously having the allowance to go full violent helps a lot… DP and Wolvie fight twice and it’s nerdgasm good (and Deadpool says as much lol). They really don’t hold back. The whole thing is genuinely hilarious too. There are some truly laugh out loud funny moments in the script. Hugh Jackman is as incredible as he’s always been as Wolverine. He carries some serious baggage and brings so much gravitas to the role. He IS Wolverine. My God he can act. Reynolds is as good as he’s ever been as Wade too. It’s amazing how equally they made the movie between the two characters in the title. Both get their moments and both shine throughout. Also the way they handle the ending of Logan was done in a way that shouldn’t work… but somehow does without actually undoing any of the legacy of that flawless film. And they make that whole thing so gloriously entertaining… Honestly, the opening credits are soooo good. The villain(s) are stock standard unfortunately… lazily wanting to take over the world for pretty selfish reasons… I thought we’d moved past one note villains like this, but alas here we are. Poor Emma Corrin did their best with thin material.
Now to the cameos… no spoilers obviously… but there is some genuine jaw dropping fan service and some completely unexpected players that play key roles. My cinema was hollering a few times. Lady Deadpool appears for about 4 minutes. She doesn’t remove her mask and I had to check the end credits to see whether it was who I thought it was from the voice. Head pool and Kidpool are in for less time… and babypool has even less time… it’s actually insane how little time the Deadpool variants have actually. But wow what an unbelievably great scene they have together in what must be the most violent, bloody moment in MCU history. Dogpool was under-utilised too… but alas I’m sneaking into spoiler territory. It is a strange choice to have them as accessories is all I’m saying…
Post credits scene was just a callback to an earlier part of the film… it worked well but it was a gag… not anything that will shape the future. Speaking of the future… as I mentioned at the top… I’m unsure of where we go from here…
Also… Jackman wears that jacket featured in that new figure for literally 30 seconds late late late in the film… bizarre choice for a figure.
