Thanks for the info. I have the jedi master version so will play around with that a bit. My hope was to place the awake sculpt on the sideshow and use the eyes wide shut head on the hot toys. Still almost 3 weeks until I get him.

I just can't do it. I would be settling on this like I did ANH Luke, Han, and Obi. I am not happy with the sculpts at all. The force one is better but still doesn't look like Yoda to me. Looks like his chubby cousin or something. Not happy with the paint wash, the clean robes, the underscaled accessories and finally the price.

I love Yoda. I love Star Wars. I am growing to loathe Hot Toys. I could accept the cost if it was the greatest Yoda figure ever, but it is not. Too many things I don't like, very little that I do.

I ended up putting in an order and I hate myself for it. I agree, so many of these HT Star Wars figures have been so disappointing compared to a lot of their other lines. Star Wars will always be my main love, but none of my SW figures are nearly as accurate and impressive as any of my Marvel figures. I never picked up Luke, Leia, young Han, or Chewie since I wasn't happy with how they turned out and know there will be at least a couple more versions of each. I've even considered selling my Rey/BB-8 set since really the face and body doesn't look much like Daisy Ridley either, but I'd probably be lucky to get even half my money back for it since they made so darn many.

I'm looking at this like I did with Obi-Wan, where it's very likely the only version that will be available for a number of years to come. Obi grew on me once I got him, mainly on the strength of the clothing and paint apps. So we'll see how I feel about this Yoda once I have him for a bit.

Quoted FYI:

In looking at the HT vs. SSC heads, I would say that the SSC size looks more accurate. The HT head feels about 20% bigger overall, and sculpt-wise it just seems fatter somehow, like Yoda is a bit overweight. The HT sculpt detail and paint is astoundingly good (other than that red dirt wash) and is a MASSIVE improvement over SSC's soft detail and unsubtle lime-like green paint but the HT head does seem a bit too large for Yoda - and maybe a bit too big for the ears the head has (like proportionately, the ears should be a bit bigger or the head itself a bit smaller.)

I did manage to get the glued-on hair to a point where it looks okay in terms of the Yoda "messy hair" look, but it still isn't 100% due to the too-straight hairs (a bit of the "finger in power socket" look.) Will post pics later.

I also swapped the robe to a modded (hoodless) SSC Jedi master robe because it seems a better match and doesn't have the bathrobe look the HT one has. Out of all the 1/6 Yoda robes I've had (Medi, HT, SSC Mentor/ESB, SSC Master/Prequel, Hasbro) I think the SSC Master/Prequel one is the best fabric and drape, but you have to cut off the hood and mend it.

Sooooo, the hair is in fact glued on. I kept noticing video reviewers all saying 'rooted hair'.....when it clearly looks glued on to me. Unless there actually is a rooted hair/glued on hair versions (which I'd prefer well done rooted hair). But I'm quite sure they just have a case of dumbass syndrome.

They should have left the hair sculpted. Watch that stuff start falling off in a couple of years

Yeah i would have been fine with just the sculpted hair...as was originally intended. The glued on hair looks like a 'lazy after thought' of an excuse for not executing it right in the first place..

Unlike the last few posters I love the classic Star Wars line. I have Luke, Han, Leia, and Obiwan with no regrets. I also have DX Bespin Luke and love him too. Yoda was a no brainer for me all along but suddenly I had doubts after seeing the final version. I have mixed feelings on the hair but that's not keeping me from ordering. I think the weight of the face and the sculpt is fine, but the dark green puppy nose is REALLY bothering me. It changes the whole look. I want to hope that it doesn't stand out as much in person as it does in pics but I haven't been convinced enough to order yet. Still looking to see more pictures that might change my mind.

There's no doubt this Yoda is not a bullseye figure. The closed-eyes sculpt is the better one, but both have that slight chubbiness, and a slight oversize (and as I said, head looking too big for the ears.) But, like with all the HT figs you mention, it is elevated greatly by the extreme level of sculpt detail and the amazing paint apps. It's such a huge leap forward over the SSC efforts.

Glued on in two rows - one toward the top of sculpted hair and one toward bottom (so it does look a bit more layered/natural.) It does look better in-hand than it appears in the close-up pics. It almost feels like very fine fiberglass strands, a touch thicker and more rigid than that fuzzy pillow-filler people sometimes use for 1/6 grey hair.

What's weird is that Yoda's hair onscreen in ESB is actually a 50/50 split of black and white (so Yoda had a full head of dark hair a long time ago?:lol) - so he's salt-n-pepper, not all-white as most people think. But it may be a bit like how Yoda's teeth actually show a lot of the time in ESB but you'd never include that on an open-mouth Yoda sculpt because people would say "he has teeth?"

I was one of the first to point out the puppy nose, but don't notice on the figure at all. Maybe I just lucked out - not sure. It's also possible it's one of those things that leaps out at you in pics (like the gloss on Jnix sculpts,) but isn't anywhere near as noticeable in hand.

Shouldn't it be though? Jedi Mentor Yoda was $60-$70 when released and Jedi Master Yoda was $90-$100. I'm not even sure making a comparison to the SS version fair. This one is $200. Double the price of Sideshow's last effort which came with just as many accessories.

It sucks because I think a lot of collectors feel trapped. If you have been collecting most of the Hot Toys OT line or have a DX07 Luke, Yoda is a bit of a necessity. He is from arguably one of the best Star Wars movies in some of the franchises most iconic scenes. On top of that, another 1/6 ESB/ROTJ Yoda is not likely to happen again for years, if ever. So what do you do? Settle for a ho hum figure? Wait for an inevitable $150 + custom sculpt for a figure you already paid $200 for? Have a glaring omission from your collection?

I think the inevitable conclusions are totally fair in my opinion. Look at the $30-40 increase just between the two SSC versions. And going by their recent releases ($240 for Maul etc) you can believe SSC would be charging around the same as HT now. The price ce difference is just they way the hobby has gone now, so comparing to previous releases is totally normal.

You are right though, not much choice right now. There's always faults that can be picked, but I am still hoping to love this Yoda when it arrives.

It's not the price that's the only unfair comparison. The SS figures are old and were by far the best around at the time. The only competition was the cheap toy Hasbro 12" figures. The SS version blew them away, and some still look pretty good today for the prices they charged back then.

Look at the 1st Hot Toys Iron Man release, the original MKIII at about $160 back then. It looks like a bad toy next to the newer Iron Man HT figures. It's not a fair comparison as they have progressed in quality by leaps and bounds. And many collectors still aren't happy with the quality of some figures today, as they should be due to the overly high price points.

When you buy a new figure you pay at least a 20-30% premium. It's like buying a new car and driving it off the lot...not quite but you get the point.

I wait and get most figures a few months or even years down the line for way better
prices. It usually works out if you are patient.

Even so I went ahead and ordered this. I think it looks great despite some minor flaws. I got a sideshow version as well for $80 so I'll end up with 2 Yodas for $140 each.

I really don't get all the negativity. The cheeks are big but yoda does puff up his cheeks from time to time and does look like that. The hair is good enough and you could remove it if you don't like it. The nose is a minor nit at best.

I wonder if some of you get any enjoyment out of collecting at all or just like to *****.

I am amazed at how complacent people are with Yoda. You go into the Darth Vader threads and people are nitpicking every little detail and doing full on heavy mods. Yoda is "meh, good enough" :lol

Possibly because Yoda's helmet doesn't change much, nor his chest box and gloves... :wink1:

But I agree. This Yoda isn't perfect but the nits to pick are significantly smaller (not due to figures size...)

I think the issue is that people care more about Vader. He's one of the most iconic characters in film history, period. Beloved though Yoda may be, he ain't that.

There's also been multiple Vader figures, so there's that sense of, how are they still not getting this right!? And then specific armor pieces are easier to compare for accuracy vs a mouth or face that changes from scene to scene.
