FINALLY.
I knew it was only a matter of time before Lucas caved, which was why I never bought the SE Trilogy. While some of the small additions were improvements to the movies, it will be quite nice to watch the movies I grew up enjoying instead of the revisionist bull he threw at us just because he was having too much fun experimenting with his special effects.
I have to admit though, him playing around with the OT was what made the Prequels possible...
But I guess for some that wasn't necessarily a good thing.:D
Now does this mean Sideshow will come out with a figure to commemorate this? (I doubt it, but I'm trying to keep on-topic...)

Well, with this new version, we'll have both. I'm very undecided, this may be something I ask for Christmas.

I am very excited about these being FINALLY released on DVD.
:fireworks :banana :chew :elefant :fireworks

Like most I was real stoked to see the SE in the theatres back in the day, but I had no idea that these craptastic revisions would be the "official" and only versions released. Its been too long of a wait. I do wonder if with this release Lucasfilm is making and extremely "original" edition, and then will later release a re-mastered set, a la the 90's THX versions?

My only concern is that these will be really horrendous picture and sound quality, but I would have a hard time seeing Lucasfilm releasing something like that on DVD? Also on the plus side for me, I'd refused to buy the 2004 SE, so now I can cave and get the version I really want and the SE as an added bonus!!! :rotfl

AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

It figures!! I just broke down and bought the DVD set last week. :monkey2

Curse you George Lucas!!! :emperor

I know he's only doing this to get even more $ but I have given into the fact that I am George's Bit*h. I will pretty much buy any version he releases of these films.

I found this link on slashdot. This is the news story I remember reading. If you think George is really listening to the fans, you need to read this.

The best part,

The special edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I’m not going to spend the, we’re talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore. It’s like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I’m sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for it. I’m the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they’re going to throw rocks at me, they’re going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

Jeez, just leave the man alone. He created movies we all love and made a fortune doing it. Bully for him. THen he re-made them, and most of us love those, too. Then, for whatever reason, he is releasing the originals on DVD like we all wanted. Why all this negativity? Did you think you should get them for free? Complain complain complain. Yes, you have a right, but that doesn;t make it less annoying.

For me that would be two reasons NOT to buy these...

My only two reasons to buy are "Han shoots first" & "No Jabba in Ep. IV".

That's all, everything else works great for me!

Agree, the new celebration song and other planets at the end of Jedi are much much better.

Exactly what I was thinking Mikey. People have been bitching about not getting the originaly versions and here they are. Now that they got what they've been asking for, it's a ploy by Lucas to get more money. Get a life people. You're never happy.

I will probably pass. I like the 5.1 sound and better picture quality of the current SE's. While I am far from crazy about all the "added" or changed footage the sound and picture quality have me sticking with the SE's. I just don't want to go back to 2.0 sound.

I don't think there's anyone who thinks Lucas is releasing these purely because the fans want them. He's obviously listened to fans and knows there's a market for the original versions. There's no reason to be angry about it unless you don't like the fact that Lucas knows how to make money.

You can always stick it to him by not buying the new DVDs when they come out.

I'm in the camp that likes the SE better. In fact, I hope that he updates them again with more Ewoks and species that were introduced in the prequels..and add more to the battles of Hoth, Yavin, Endor ect...

But the important thing is...since he's giving this version of the movies on dvd that he said he wouldn't do....maybe he'll give us episodes 7, 8 and 9 one day...Then we'll all have crusted up dry teats...:lol

Right there with you Kit. I'll most likely wait until the HD DVD era to get my next version. I can always just watch the VHS if I want to see the regular version again.

You mean to tell me that Greedo didnt shoot first???? :google

I know this is sarcasm but to tell you the truth there are people out there that have actually asked me this question. I sh!t you not.

I think part of the reason some people are being rubbed the wrong way is that he just re-released the special editions minus the extras disc. Now he is releasing the originals.

I assume since Blu-Ray and HDDVD are coming out soon somebody must have told him to cash in on these before the format switches to the new technology.

What gets me is that he blatantly B.S.ed fans saying that the originals were gone forever. Dude, don't insult our intelligence by making these statements like that. We all know that if you are planning on further retooling the saga you are going to need the originals. He must think we are stupid.

HD will be coming as well as a super duper deluxe box set off the whole saga with changes made for sure to Ep 1 and 2 as far as visuals and Yoda is concerned. And no doubt there a prolly thousands of hours of extras alone that could be released.

There are 3 guarantees in life: death, taxes and Star Wars merchandise to buy.

I'm glad of this because I want the originals as artifacts of my childhood, but whenever I go back and watch them I'll probably watch the SEs. Aside from Greedo shooting first, I have no real problems with any of the other changes and enjoy most of them. While I miss yub yub, I think the galaxy celebrating sequence is a better way to end the film.

But I really like having them as extras on a new set- although I might wait for the Blu-ray versions.

"He must think we are stupid."

Aren't we? Isn't he going to sell another million copies of this trilogy? And then a few months later, we'll be salivating for the HD version!
