Recommended PARTS so far to BUILD GIMLI:

TOYBIZ clothed figure Gimli (soft figure):

*head sculpt with removeable helmet
*gauntlets
*plastic double-sided ax
*chainmail matches the maile used on Boromir (but may be too short on DiD fig)

DiD Gimli figure:
*ALL clothing -- underclothes, robe, pants, belts, boots, real wood and metal weapons (5 axes) -- possibly even chainmail with repaint.

TOYBIZ Rotocast Gimli (hard figure):
*head sculpt with removeable helmet (slightly smaller than the clothed figure by ToyBiz)
*gauntlets (must be cut from figure - may also be smaller)
*hard shoulder armor (must be cut from figure)
*rear pouches (must be cut from figure)

DML Chainmail:
*Timeline knights

Below is the specific instructions from Dwing on what he used and did:

Sure thing.
TB parts:
Head sculpt
Gauntlets
Neck ball and socket
-pull out of TB neck, may need heat and some prying
-hold SMALL end with plyers and cut off at the LARGE ball
DID:
Body
-cut off about 1/4" of arms above wrist line(arms are to long)
----TB gauntlets should fit snug/you can also pull out TB ball and socket and drill hole in DID arm
Clothes
----if you use the shoulder armour it can come out of the clothing
----there are two straps conecting them, one goes on eash side of the Body
Boots and gaters
Extra if available
Toybiz ROTOCAST:
shoulder armour
-hold at bottom of arm and cut around armour
-cut at bottom of armour
-you will need to dremel/cut out top inside of armour
-cut slice of inside of armour to fit over arm

*I will edit later at home and add pictues*

Wow. That seller has yet anther DiD Gilmi up, but she's raised the price by another dollar.

I got the rotocast Gimli not the Toybiz doll one. It's got the same helmet, headsculpt and arm gauntlets that the 12" doll has, which is all the good stuff from Toybiz, plus it's got the good shoulder armor as well as the rubber belt pouches and he comes with a small handled axe that the DiD doesn't.

head, helmet, gauntlets - either Toybiz Gimli
shoulder armor, pouches, small axe - rotocast Gimli
body, clothes, weapons, boots (I'm still not satisfied with them) - DiD Gimli
arm chainmail - Timeline knight

Rotocast has the same HS but is slightly smaller. I think the gaunlets are smaller to. If you can get the TOYBIZ cloth figure for 10-15$ it would be worth it.

How can we tell which TB Gimli is rotocast in which is soft?

I think I am right here, but I could be wrong

"soft"

"roto"

Are you serious? :)

Yea, King has it right -- the "soft" meaning clothed and the roto is the "hard" plastic figure (basically a 1/6th tall version of the small figure).

Also an IMPORTANT note from Dwing ---

Roto = smaller sculpt than clothed figure.

Thanks for that, Dwing, now i don't feel so bad about not getting the roto. :)

I think he meant how we could tell from a picture (like on an auction). It shouldn't be hard to tell if you had them in front of you.

I ended up buying the rotoscope version since I didn't realize there were two different ones.

Yeah, I guess it can be confusing.

Rotocast version comes in an open front box, always blue.

The clothed 12" Gimli comes in a flap-front box, either green or blue.

Had an idea. If you wanted you could shorten the bottom(below belt) by 1/4" then shorten the body by 1/4". Now the one thing to remember is if we shorten the body he may be to close in height to the Hobbits.

Pardon the slight deviation from topic, but I said I'd post some refs of Dragon's armoured figures for anyone who doesn't already have 'em. Sorry for the quality of the pics, they were taken in bad light. Anyway, from left to right, they are Lord Arnaut and De Kere (from Timeline), and Olaf the Viking.

De Kere's armour is the simplest of the two knights, however, Lord Arnaut comes with lots of mail pieces and would be the better choice of the two, imo. He's got two mail coifs and mail leggings, in addition to the coat and arm sleeves. He has plate pauldrons and his gauntlets also have fingers, whereas De Kere has the mitten-type gauntlets. His plate armour is also more "generic-looking" than De Kere's, and could be useful for a Gondorian soldier or even a Ringwraith custom.

Olaf's coat of mail is roomier than the others and laces up the back. The only downside is the attached sleeves, which severely restrict shoulder movement. Those could be removed, of course. He also comes with a mail coif and helmet that could be used for a Rohirrim soldier custom.

Thanks, I got one. The seller has sold 18 of these in the last couple of weeks. Interestingly the price started at $15.95 and crept up to $19.95.

So which Gimli is the better buy? Or do we need both?

Pro and cons I suppose. They both have the same sculpt, helmet and gauntlets. Unique to the Rototcast one is the good shoulder armor that can be hollowed out as well as the small axe. The cloth one has apparently a slightly larger sculpt.
