Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

Not a fan of the SSC sculpt. to dated and the paint is just all around bad. tho a awesome paint app could make it all come together tho. The new Hot toys sculpt in my opinion is vastly superior. just needs to be tweaked to make him look a bit older.

Nail on the head....and a great picture to back it up!

The issue for me is that it seems you can pick one up for $100-120 but you then have to do a repaint and a few other tweaks (new body, hands etc.) and so it's a $300 custom figure anyway. The SSC is great for those who already have it from years ago and have already done the fixes, but for someone starting out it's not that great.

I do agree the SSC sculpt, while dead-on Guiness, is lacking in detail (in addition to the oversize issue,) making it look a bit outdated unless you get a silentsurfer (master) level repaint that really brings life to the head (then you're talking $$$.)

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

:clapYep... but... $$$. And, well... potential repainter issues like a year+ wait and never seeing your head or you money again.

And... still quite oversized, but I guess the hood hides that, and he's more stand-alone and with Vader, so not as big of an isue than say Luke.

lejuan that looks awesome! night and day Difference. but what is the cost of getting someone talented to paint that?

I'm guessing silentsurfer is around $250-300+?

Not sure with Small Studios and others, probably a bit less than that.

The other thing is the wait - which can be months to years to never getting anything back (yes, it happens, even with bigger names.)

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

If the sculpt turns out good, I'll probably hunt one of those down. If not ohs well.

Yeah, like Talibane said, good paints aren't cheap and the wait... if I had the Sideshow version for MSRP I doubt I'd 'upgrade' to the HT figure, I'd spend the money on a paint up. Stock HT paint is clearly better than stock SS paint - but sculpt for sculpt, the SSC looks like Obi Wan and the HT looks sort of like Obi Wan.

As good as it looks, if that was what was in the HT proto pics you can be assured people would be tearing it apart regardless.

Which doesn't negate the criticisms being dished out to this.

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

There's a trade off, sure HT offers more realism and finer detail in their sculpts, but what good is that if it doesn't look like the person it's supposed to be. Sideshow's is instantly recognized as Guinness for likeness, Hot Toys' is only recognizable in the general Obi-Wan traits, beard, hairdo, the specific face details look as much like McGreggor as Guinness.

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

I don't have the SS ANH Obi Wan so I really was hoping HT would pull this off, but so far, other than the Stormtroopers I feel their figures are not making the grade. Unless I see better pic's I'll wait and see if the Version 2 of each character hits the mark when there made.

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

HT's version looks more like Ep III Obi-Wan + 18 years, so from that aspect it's more accurate than Guinness himself. It's not HT that needs to change, it's Ep IV! Maybe we'll get an Extra Special Edition...

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

Your post implied that folks are inclined to rag on HT just 'cause it's HT. My point was that any ragging on this sculpt is because it's not there yet in terms of a great likeness, and nought to do with manufacturer fanboyism. Maybe I drew the wrong inference. But clearly this is not a case of 'haters gon' hate'.

Re: Hot Toys Obi-Wan Kenobi Sixth Scale Figure

I'll wait for in hand pics, no more preordering for me. I was looking forward to upgrading a couple of figures, Han especially but these aren't getting me excited.
