Hmm, have been reading Spidey since the '70s. :/ How many figures have HT made, though, considering how popular you believe the franchise to be? Wow, a whole 4 of 'em (er, including the up-coming ASM and 'New Goblin' *pukes*).

If you've really been reading Spider-Man since the 70's, then you should know how popular the character and comic is. Your reasoning that he's not as popular as Batman or the Avengers because one action figure company makes more of those characters than they do of Spidey is, well...:dunno

It's obvious why Hot Toys makes more figures of characters from those film franchises. It's because they are characters from ridiculously successful movies, and a lot of 1/6 collectors collect characters from movies. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Hot Toys Batman owners have never picked up a Batman comic in their life. Same goes with the Avengers figures. I think the person that said Spider-Man is consistently more popular was making the point that while the Avengers and Batman are hot topics now, Spider-Man is Marvel's flagship character, and has been for a very long time.

Like the raw photo's of the original Garfield suit, it seems to need some movie magic, but I'm really liking the mask :D

The whole point of it is that they went out on a limb to be different with the ASM costume didn't they, to differentiate themselves from the Raimi trilogy...yes?

So why not stick with the difference, that was foisted onto us I should add, and at least have the courage of your own convictions? This reversion back to a more classic design shows that the ASM change was nothing more than 'change for the sake of change' after all, it was not an artistic statement at all. It is a reverse step in the framework and continuity of the new sequence.

Sadly with directors been forced into the back seat by the money men, who all want only 'overly safe product' ie one that will generate a return on investment at minimum risk...but in the worst and most originality-stifling way possible, real creativity and artistic growth is never going to come out of Hollywood.

:exactly: well said

Hate how people say that spiderman is an afterthought. People were begging spiderman to be in the avengers. If marvel had the rights he'd be in the movie faster than you could blink. As for batman the third movie was horrible IMO .

If HT release this without fixing the inaccuracies now, with the seemingly new costume in the next movie, that would be a shame. Might be the only time HT visit anything similar to the original Garfield suit.

I hated the last Batman movie, too. I get annoyed by how seriously those movies take themselves. I'm also amazed by how they've convinced some people that Batman isn't a superhero, he's a detective who wears a tactical uniform. :rotfl

Spider-Man is far from an afterthought. He wouldn't be as relevant as he is now, over 50 years since his first appearance, if he were simply an afterthought. Like I was saying, the Nolan Batman films try SO hard to convince people that they aren't superhero movies, but rather, realistic detective/mystery movies. I honestly think that's why they are so popular. Lots of average movie goers wouldn't be caught dead with a comic book in their hands, because they are too "childish", but they go to the midnight showing of every Nolan Batman film because they are "epic" and "cool".

Not to say that Batman on the whole is a fad. Of course not. But it's obvious why Hot Toys makes 50 Batman figures for every Spidey one. It's simply because it's what movie collectible fans want.

Who said they were not always going to go USM for the first and more classic for the second? :dunno

Because the entire set up for the first movie was about grounding it in an urban reality? Explaining why he did this and that. Skateboarding, street cool, edgier than what went before.

This new suit is from a different reality and basically undoes everything that was good about the last movie. A fresh reboot.
I don't hate this new suit (although those on set pics look worrying) but I do think tonally it's completely wrong for what this reboot has already started to reboot?

Ah..lets start again..again..again...

Street cool and reality does not equate to red satin perfection with beautifully raised rubber spiderwebs, varnish screenprinted highlights, large white cartoon eyes and satin booties.
In Raimi's movies it was a perfect fit, not in this. At least not with what they were trying to do with the first one.

:dunno

I pretty clearly meant an afterthought for HT (Batman, Avengers and Iron Man all being bigger priorities -- presumably they go for where the market is, no?), not in all of pop culture.

I agree with this. As I said, there's nothing I've seen to indicate that they're not going with a progression of Spidey maturing from an 'edgy' outfit to something more classic.

Quite a big leap from your first paragraph to your second! Would love to understand the inbetween?

No need to be condescending with 'let's start again again again' just because I am not going to read pages and pages of people whining about the new costume.

Fact is, you, me and no one here knows whether this development was always the natural plan.

People hate it. People love it. As a forum we are as divided as ever. But there is no need for the haters of this to ***** on the lovers and tell them how 'wrong' they are. (not pointing fingers here, just summarising).

Then again, this is SSF after all. :lol

Surpised you could take any offence at my post man. There was nothing in there which was intended as condescending towards anyone. Nor was I forcing my opinion on anyone, thats all it is..my opinion.

..and it is starting again and again? That's pretty much fact at this point. They went down a design route in the first movie which was intentionally polar opposite to the Raimi movies. They needed to tell the audience "Forget about the Raimi movies" this is a new take. They have back peddled because of the very mixed reaction to the first movie. Nothing shown to us thus far (including a lengthly new origin storyline) would lead us back to the look of the Raimi movies. The whole point of ASM was to set up a different world. And now what are they doing?

Whatever the studio's reasons for the total swing around, who knows?
Personally I believe they feel like they need to appeal to a broader audience than the first one pulled in, so they are playing it safe. They know the previous incarnation of the suit works and is liked.

It's typical hollywood. Make everything as packageable and safe as possible. But I suppose with movies this expensive, who can blame them.

Sorry man. I misread your 'starting again and aain' as post response to people not getting the new suit. Can see you meant the studio now changes the entire tone. :duff
