Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Put it this way: I think the likeness on this is closer to RotS Kenobi than the likeness on the ANH figure is to ANH Kenobi.

Mer 2019 gonna be much more expansive than 2018, I thought I was done with 2018, gradually slowing down and now these PT vortex...

I've seen people criticizing ANH Leia sculpt, so no surprises anymore.

Pretty sure some people have worrying levels of being finicky about sculpts.

Ordered the deluxe, Probably wont get Anakin and will wait for Dooku or Grievous to pair up with this guy. Hope the puffiness gets fixed before release, otherwise im happy

You think so? I thought the general consensus was that the likeness on the ANH Kenobi wasn’t all that good. Do people think the likeness on the proto sculpt for this is in the same class as the ANH sculpt? :lol

This would look great with some clone troopers. Maybe that will be on HT list later.......must....resist.....

He’d look great with some clone armor on him too

When I first started reading comments about the ANH Kenobi sculpt being bad, I thought it had to be sarcasm. Apparently, this is actually a popular sentiment - and not sarcasm. Okay. Could someone clue me in on what should have been done better to improve the likeness? Here's a side-by-side of Alec Guinness and the HT Kenobi. I think the facial features match up pretty well, so I'm really curious as to what I'm not seeing.

The only thing that bothered me about the sculpt is the Greek-statue-type beard. So I took a casting of the HT head and sanded off the beard, repainted the head (poorly), and added real hair to the beard. If you ignore my bad paint job, I think the underlying sculpt presents a very good likeness of Sir Alec Guinness as Kenobi.

I think Hot Toys did an outstanding job on both of their Kenobi figures. This new prequel one is a stronger likeness, yes, but I'm hoping to understand why the ANH one is starting to be discussed as if it looks nothing like Obi-Wan. I've even read comments about how it's in the same category as the ANH Han and Luke sculpts in terms of missing the mark on conveying the actor's likeness. That blows my mind. Please help me understand.

I suspect to see many kitbashes of HT Obi and SS Mythos Obi.

It's the eyes, something's not quite right with them, and no matter how much of the rest of the sculpt is on point, eyes are the most important facial feature and I think those saying it doesn't look like Guinness are saying so because the eyes jump out and don't look like him.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

You can clearly see that it's not him. It's not convincing at all. Eyes are wrong 100%.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

To answer your question, ajp4mgs, I concur with MF that for me, it’s the eyes that throw it off the most. To me, they look like they’re too squinted and slightly sloped too much at a downward angle. I also agree with you that the beard throws it off as well (though not as much as the eyes), and I also agree with you that the facial features in general are pretty good. It’s not a poor sculpt, but it still does miss the mark. I’d personally say at the moment that it’s the weakest sculpt in the ANH line in my opinion, narrowly beating out Luke for that position. They’re both pretty close though.

The proto sculpt to me on this RotS figure is a better portrait of RotS Kenobi than the ANH sculpt is of ANH Kenobi.

Great job on the beard redo on your sculpt. :clap

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

I think the ANH sculpt is good. It doesn't appear as if it's someone else. I look at it and see Alec Guinness.

I agree. Looking at him on the shelf he's 100% unmistakable. Sure HT has advanced their art since then, and maybe we'd get a Tarkin accuracy these days, but for me he's great and definitely an awesome figure.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

For me it’s some subtle differences in the eyes and mouth that kinda kill his expression. The figure lacks that wise, friendly look about him.

Re: Hot Toys - MMS477 / MMS478 - Star Wars Episode III: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Std & Dlx)

Thank you to everyone who provided their point of view on the ANH Kenobi. I guess for those who find it lacking, it comes down to mostly being about the eyes. I agree that the sculpt would have benefited from more open eyes (and rounded eyebrows) to portray a less pensive Obi-Wan, but I still see plenty of Guinness in it. And the more serious/pensive look can work fairly well for the Vader duel poses, IMO. While I'm firmly in the camp of those who think HT did a good job of portraying Guinness's Kenobi (just with a less-than-typical Guinness expression), at least you all have made it clearer to me what the objections/criticisms are based on. Thanks again!

As for this Ep3 McGregor Kenobi: congrats to everyone who will be adding him to your collections. The likeness is outstanding. My hope is that HT can keep the momentum going with more OT releases.
