For that just watch Iron Man 2 :dunno

I don't know anything about Iron Man comics etc but I think it would be more interesting to see the story 'move on' rather than the same armoured dude vs. armoured dude thing.

I thought Iron Man 2's final battle was just a rehash of Iron Man, just with War Machine thrown in

Nah, I loved that part. I remember seeing it and thinking I could watch a whole hour of Iron Man and War Machine trashing things. Like that other guy said... I hope we get more of that.

Shane Black discredited the Mandarin almost right after he was announced. I guess his mind could be changed but I wouldn't count on him being anything than maybe a veiled reference given they are following a retailored Extremis storyline.

I know they think that The Mandarin would come across as racially stereotyped, but are they completely ignoring the hint at the Makluan Rings from the first film?

Yup, that was Favreau's path. Black and Downey to some extent are doing their own thing.

Yes, both Marvel and Shane Black pretty much discredited the character but I could see them changing the character to sort of appease that. Realistically most people thought that Kingsley was the Mandarin despite what they are saying and the Iron Man stable isn't that vast, it's possible just not that probable.

Well we know that Shane Black was against using The Mandarin because of the racial stereotype angle however its seemed that when Favreau was directing he intended to use Mandarin in his third film and maybe that's the way Marvel wanted to go, they have certainly been dropping references to him in the last two films.

Do Marvel have enough control over the story to say to Shane Black we want you to use the Mandarin?

Favreau was leading up the Mandarin but even himself said they had no clue how to address him and that they were probably going to use tech, where a lot of the cartoon's inspiration came from. Favreau has even said that the Mandarin might have been just a puppetmaster from the beginning and never actually be seen like CLAW from Inspector Gadget (I believe that was his parallel).

Shane Black said he didn't want to use armor vs armor and is conducting a story more similar to a Tom Clancy novel without the inclusion of the Mandarin.

Marvel could shoehorn the Mandarin into it but the last time they got involved in the process we got Spider-Man 3 with Venom pushed in by Avi Arad. Kevin Feige knows he has a good thing running and has it because initially he let directors do their own thing keeping within established parameters of moving towards The Avengers. Now that The Avengers is done and there isn't anything but a basic outline for The Avengers 2, I would imagine they won't be messing with Shane Black too much and if he includes anything it'd be on his own call.

Wasn't it Sony and not Marvel who wanted to shoehorn in Venom? I'm fine with the Mandarin being a shadowy power player in this film, I just want him introduced. If they went the route of him being a big player in business like he was sometimes portrayed in the comics, I'd be cool with that. He doesn't have to be all Fu-Manchu stereotype.

It'd be cool if his company developed the tech for the rings or something - new, even more miniaturized powerhouses to compete with Stark.

Following reports that Chinese actor-singer Andy Lau had landed a Scientist role in Marvel Studios' next outing post-The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Hong-Kong-based newspaper Apple Daily has confirmed the role, in addition to more production details. Praising the amount of screen time Andy will supposedly have, the report adds that Chinese actresses Fan Bingbing and Yang Mi are joining the Shane Black-directed threequel as as Andy’s wife and assistant respectively. What's rather more interesting in the report (transcribed via AndyLauSounds) says:

The film will have location shooting in Beijing and Shanghai, it will narrates that the daughter of Robert Downey Jr.’s friend was kidnapped and brought to China, in order to save his friend’s daughter, he flew over from America to China to seek help from Andy to strengthen his abilities to fight The Mandarin. You will see Iron Man fly over The Great Wall of China, National Palace Museum & other landmarks in Shanghai May 2013

Although veteran actor Ben Kinglsey's role has yet to be disclosed, the report lists The Mandarin. Suggesting why the villain won't be of Chinese descent, a la his source material, the reports explains:

In order not to hurt the feelings of Western and Chinese audience, the story will not focus so much on the villain’s background as not to display the Chinese as evil. [The production] had already got approval from the State Administration of Radio Film and Television in order to be shot, all contents that harms Chinese image had been “removed”, this explains why the villain will be a bit different from the original comic.

Iron Man 3, a "technological, crisis thriller" set in the world of "international war, arms and terror," is loosely based on the six-issue "Extremis" story arc written by Warren Ellis. Starring Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian), Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, and James Badge Dale (Eric Savin), Shane Black directs IM3 into theaters on May 3, 2013!

People are already freaking out that this is going to have too many elements (using Iron Man 2 as the example of when that goes wrong... not sure I TOTALLY agree there) but actually I can see this working very simply if the latest rumor is true:

Iron Man 3 might be the Extremis story arc, just with some twists. Instead of the (fairly generic) bad guy in Extremis, they might be using a variation of Coldblood-7. My guess is they'll use his background as a soldier but not the fairly lame code name. He'll be the main bad guy that Iron Man actually fights, while Kingsley's Mandarin is more of a the man behind the scenes, possibly with some sort of big confrontation at the end. That's not too overstuffed.

I'm guessing they'll be doing what Iron Man 2 did with Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo by combining various elements into one villain and story line. I do wonder what role Jim Rhodes/War Machine will have in the new film, though.

I just hope it doesn't turn out to be Iron Man goes to China, just for the sake of pandering to Chinese audiences.

It seems like if Iron Man wants to film in China, the studio "has to play ball" and add "popular" Chinese actors to the movie.

If the story leads there fine, but hope the entire movie isn't a played out "fish out of water" formula.

If Iron Man is in China and Mandarin isn't anywhere to be found, I would be highly disappointed....especially if Coldblood is the bad guy......what a waste of a villain.
