Over the strenuous objections of the president; the Democrats had to trade telecoms immunity for it. And in any event Chertoff has said point blank warrantless spying on US citizens will resume by the end of the year no matter what Congress has to say about it.

I take it you won't mind if we just delete the Bill of Rights?

Answering my question with a question doesnt take the spotlight off your assertion that you presently do not enjoy all the promises of the Bill of Rights.

Again sir, an example from your life that conveys the hardship that you endure due to the Patriot Act.

Trust me, the hate comes from all walks of political life... It has no bias of party preference.

Ok, no disrespect intended to you. Maybe if you are all covered in tatoos and long hair and a conservative has no knowledge of you being a vet they may judge you. But no Republican I know of who knows someone is a Vet will treat them with anything but respect. Some of your far left leaning Liberals will though.

I travel extensively for work and pleasure and indeed lived overseas for two years (I returned in February 2002 in part because of 9/11 and the international response to our response). I can assure you the US has lost considerable respect and friendship as a direct consequence of how Bush handled the response to 9/11 and the decision to invade Iraq. You have to understand that to much of the world, the Iraq invasion was essentially unprovoked and unjustified. The response to my being American is completely different today than it was prior to 9/11.

Americans should care, why?

Sir, please step aside Im interrogating the defendent.
I'll be with you shortly.

Are you really asking me how the elimination of habeas corpus and unrestricted domestic spying has impacted my life? I don't even know how to take that question seriously.

The govt still has to go before a federal magistrate to get a tap.
So yeah we're really asking.
How does the patriot act actually adversely affect you, your friends and extended family.
If you were a member of a terrorist cell then Im glad your upset.
But if not Id like real world example of your rights being infringed upon with out the typical hyperbole.

I'll wait.

do you not understand that we no longer have a Republic anymore? the Bush regime has gotten rid of the Bill of Rights... all of our law and due process of law is based on habeas corpus. All of the constitutional links that made us literally a Republic have been done away with...

I have yet to see evidence of the Patriot Act being used for something other than terrorist surveillance.

It is a violation of personal sovereignty when acted upon, but for those guilty of the acts which it's attempting to prosecute, who gives a damn. For the most part, terrorist surveillance deals with foreign nationals, and the last I checked, the Constitution doesn't apply to them.

In the final analysis, payroll withholding and mandatory financial reporting are equally egregious violations of people's rights, and that is a crime inflicted expressly upon American citizens. When I hear Patriot Act/warrantless surveillance critics start to complain about that, then I might begin to take them seriously.

It would seem that some cannot continue this thread without resulting to insults. I'm sorry that this forum isn't mature enough for this kind of discussion.

I intended to lock the thread - but given the next 3 months are going to be filled with this kind of discussion, it would be disingenuous to try and keep it off here.

Jokes are fine, but I'm going to be less tolerant of joking abuse in these kinds of threads as it only polarizes the participants and can be misconstrued.

Because of the growing attitude change in Russia

if you want countries to hold your missile defence system then you have to be nice to them

So we should bend over backwards and kiss ass?

Isn't that like giving your lunch money to the kid you already beat up in homeroom?

no but in any kinda deal both parties have to get something & be happy

why do think America have no dealt with China and they nuclear weapons testing or Russia and they invasion of Georgia (a country that America said they had they're back when breaking away from the USSR and forming a democracy)

They world politics are changing are some countries are beginning to realise they have power

As a nation you can't afford to isolate yourself
