I'm sorry but the MGR was too linear in story and absurd. Throwing a ray is jumping the shark. They missed a real opportunity with a character who had real interesting back story. I felt like it was devil may cry when it could be more tenchu.

But, that was the whole idea behind MGR. I think most MGS fans missed that point, because they were expecting a "serious" story, for a game that never intended to have one. Funny thing is, none of the MGS games have ever delivered a serious plot (despite Kojima's dismal attempts to include one), and they're all filled with nonsensical rubbish.

As for Raiden, he already has a backstory that was thoroughly explained in MGS 2 and MGS 4. "Rising" touched upon his upbringing as a child soldier, and it was more about him reconciling with his Jack the Ripper nature. Psychologically, he becomes a "whole" person at the end of the game since he finally accepts himself for who he is. He's essentially taken the mantle from Solid Snake in MGS 2 - becoming the wise soldier that forges his own path forward.

:lecture:lecture perfectly put.

It was meant to be a high flying exciting experience that didn't take it self so seriously. I'll take this watered down straightforward plot that was never meant to be anything more... over V's "deep" plot that was literally 90% of audio tapes. Most plot points of which were never explained, or were just supposed to suspend disbelief and just go with the flow since it doesn't resemble the continuity we were told for 30 years.

I'm sorry man. I can tell you really like the game. It really didn't do it for me. But as a bigger game than portable ops without kojima I didn't have much hope. I like the deep anti war sentiment and real world observations. In the metal gear games. Especially MGS2, for example. I supposed I missed the point. I didn't like the music and character designs. I suppose I wanted to see his past and replay that part of his history.

I really don't know what you expected. We got everything you'd want to know about Raiden in MGS2. And frankly, we know more about his past than Snake's.

This is the best way to put it, honestly. And it's not even that out of place for Raiden, considering he used a sword at the end of MGS 2, and became a cyborg in MGS 4 with the skills we see he has in MGR. Don't forget that blades were apparently a huge part of his child soldier days. It's clearly a different kind of game - it wasn't even labeled a stealth game. MGR is certainly not without its flaws, but people don't seem to realize what the game was meant to be, and what it's about. And yeah, the plots are pretty much rubbish at points, though Kojima did help out a lot with MGR, so he still had some input, the point of Kojima not being in this doesn't mean a thing.

Also the game is made by the creator of DMC and Bayonetta, so yeah :lol really I'm still convinced the reason people take so much offense to the story (Which isn't even that bad on its own) is that it points out everything with the series narrative as a whole, which they take personal offense to.

Wait, you didn't like the music....? :cuckoo: How can you not like MGR's OST?!!?

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes

My expectation was a different experience. As much as I like Japanese games, these type of games don't generally appeal to me. I understand Raiden would overpower guys with guns and vehicles so the enemy needs step up. The title says it all, being a action game. I get you guys like it. It felt generic to me. And sorry, the music too.

I honestly had more fun playing MGR than MGS4 and MGS5. I couldn't even finish 5. It was the only one I couldn't bring myself to finish cause it was so boring. MGR was filled with CRAZY action and I loved it.

I tried playing Rising again recently and for me it's lost it's shine

I thought it was pretty good back when it was released, maybe I'm less easily pleased than i was 3 years ago :dunno

I still think it's great. But like with all the Metal Gears I really like, they've become somewhat bland since I've played them to death and I need to be in the mood to play one. I'm surprised I even would ever play MGR again after how grueling that Platinum was.

Whatever you may think of the franchise's narrative, as stealth games go, there are no better stealth games, Hitman comes close though.

Anyway, what's up with that EX edition of the game? What do you guys think it is? There's no significant DLC to compile into a new edition or anything.

Three things cross my mind when I saw that.

1 Why did we never get a second version of MGS4? There were tons of things they could have done with that but instead they just released that patch that made it the way it should have been at launch.

2 why no "sistence" name?

3 it will literally just have Ground Zeroes in it and the online DLC. That's it.

Are you talking about V? If so, I wasn't even aware of it. For such an ambitious MGS, the amount of replay extras is next to nil. It's mostly just the run of the mill Bandana and Stealth we've gotten almost a dozen times.

It's a crime we never got a second release. I would of bought it alone for just more Solid Snake skins. We could of had an online REX vs RAY mode, or just a Metal Gear battle game that had everything up to that point.

Kojima Productions had the funding cut and the project shutdown before they could finish Chapter 3 and so the final and real ending of the game was left out. The ending also setup the tie-in between The Phantom Pain and the first Metal Gear Solid.

Absolutely. F- Konami. Only 80 mil, world tours, a TV show, personalized and lavish LA and Tokyo offices and a mere 5 years development time? WTF were they thinking doing that to Lord Koji!

So it's still speculation at this point?

Needless to say, after all we've talked, praised and mostly complained, if it turns out to be the chapter 3 stuff, we're all gonna buy it.

We're suckers like that. :monkey2:

I honestly don't think Chapter 3 would have added much to the main point of the game anyway. I mean, Liquid gets cured by Mantis and rides erm floats off into the sunset, having 21 years of his relationship with Mantis unaccounted for when they could have taken over the world. In MGS1, both of them never came off as knowing each other that long anyway.

Yeah it's an obvious retcon. I don't mind the retcons of MGSV since it actually ties together many iffy plot points, but if it actually got the story full circle, that'd be something.

:lol this is exactly what I've been saying. The budget obviously ran out... and face it, it's a budget for a reason. You have x amount of funds to complete it. And look at the final product? They should of just reused the MGS4 engine and it would of looked good on all consoles. Sutherland wasn't cheap, and this had the largest viral marketing of any previous game in the series to date (which I frankly hated, especially the bandage mask nonsense)

I don't either. We saw where they were taking it with the bonus disc and it wasn't anything that would of drew me back into it. I'm just glad we won't have to see anymore shoehorned MGS1 troupes by him ever again. We didn't need anything to link to MGS1... we needed it to link to MG1 and we only got one scene of that. I assume that could have been chapter 3, but I dunno.

There's a fine line between reasonable retcons with just throwing in characters we know already just to pad the cast... but the whole Liquid and Mantis being in this thing alone just irritated the hell out of me. I may be inclined to slightly change my tune if we got a chapter 3 with Venom being killed by Snake and he was voiced by Hayter, but fat chance of that happening.
