Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

With Japanese-written video game narratives and characters, an amount of cheese should be expected. That said, a lot of the dialogue in the trailer wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

I imagine that Kojima sits at his desk, spending a lot time and effort cherry-picking lines he thinks sounds cool, but the effect maybe doesn't translate as well as he'd hoped.

I think you're right. Japanese humor isn't all that great. These are the same people that sell panties out of vending machines and put lizards on girls heads while their body is binded. I don't think I ever laughed playing any MGS game.

Yeah that kind of stuff is slightly amusing in a "Japan is weird" kind of way, but when it comes to actual clever or funny writing, Japanese writing is rarely that funny to me.

Still, it can be emotionally involving, but that's usually easier to do than humor (not to mention it translates better).

I'm on the fence about how the writing in MGS5 will turn out. Kojima's not exactly on top of his game anymore, and people kind of expect the latest to be the most mature of the bunch. I'm not seeing it. So much pandering still.

You're right on the money. The only games in the franchise that made me emotionally involved was MGS1 and MGS3. The others were very vanilla to me in that aspect.

The writing seems very flat, and I don't think Kiefer's voice fits Big Boss at all. It sounds to unnatural coming out of his mouth.

I still don't know why they ****ed up Ocelot's likeness so bad.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Red Dead Redemption? Cause it has like 30 seconds of horseback riding? :dunno And someone said Uncharted? WTF? lol

Good trailer, not overly exciting but it did show everything that is trademark of a true MGS game, plus the gameplay mechanics look impressive, redefining stealth as usual, no biggie.

Loving Sutherland's Snake voice, I can definitely feel how much Big Boss has been through just by his new voice, it was a good choice after all, poorly handled but good.

And the pony tail's ok, I've always loved Snake but I was never crazy about the mullet, I mean.... it's a mullet, the least respected haircut ever created.

Except in MGS4, the mullet works with his mustache for the porn actor look.

What's wrong with Ocelot's face? He's always had those angulated features and effeminate eyes, they only gave him long hair, what's missing is the moustache, I think that's why you guys think it looks weird...

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Yeah, Ocelot's looking weird, not just aged. That boy has that very Japanese feathered hairstyle. Hate that.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

But is MGS1 really cheesy? I think the characters were new and inventive. I think everything tried to top that Fox-hound unit so eventually the games are riddled with cheese.

The B&B unit was very cheesy, might be the worst.

Yeah, sure was. Mind you, that doesn't translate to not cool or I don't like it. Just take a step back and think of it from the outside in.

A modern ex-Spetznaz current USSOF trooper dressed in western attire and using single-action revolvers in a modern battlefield.

A giant shaman who has living tattoos.

Johnny.

A "mind control" specialist in gimp gear.

Codenames Solid and Liquid Snake. Liquid Snake running around Alaska shirtless and in a trench coat.

The whole clone thing.

There are more I'm sure. MGS is more akin to something like GIJoe than real life. Crazy characters and situations based around a realistic world and events.

I always wondered what Kojima's target audience is? Like some said in here, there's Japanese humor/themes that just doesn't translate to the majority of the world (mostly western).

It's no secret that Kojima thinks he knows western culture more than he actually does. I'm not putting down the guy, but that's just the truth.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I can't get over how good Sutherland's voice sounds, it's grounded again, sounds so natural.

By MGS 4 and PW, Hayter's voice already sounded way too forced, like Bale's Batman by TDRK.

I think they hit the nail, just wish Kojima didn't handle it as disrespectfully as he did.

I don't understand why he looks older than Big Boss when he's supposed to be 10 years younger, at least.

Wasn't he 20 in Snake Eater? And Naked Snake was 29?

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I wonder if we will see Naomi (origins)?

When it came to the general audience, last game I thought he got it right was mgs3, after that....

I doubt it, I don't think Frank Yeager is making an appearance in these games. Unless it's a big secret.

The whole Null thing was ridiculous.

MGS3 was the last good game of the franchise.

It was very 80's stereotypical like the A-Team or something, but I think it still worked. At least none had a cheesy specialty. Maybe Decoy Octopus was a bit cliche.

It's just got cornier with the latest installments. MGSPW tried to be too ridiculous for it's own good.

I loved the game, but I always thought the Cobras were ridiculous.

Really, a lot of it seems silly when you step back, but at the same time, it's all that stuff, the good and bad/silly, that makes MGS what it is. Otherwise, it would be a strict "real life" or historical type military game.

The Cobras, aside from the Boss were horrendous. I agree. MGS3 as a game is up there with MGS1 still even with that flaw.

:exactly: :goodpost:

Even if most of it's "jokes" don't even make me laugh, if still find the whole atmosphere of the franchise so pleasant.

Also, I didn't like so much the fact that PW's bosses were all machines, it didn't give me enough motivation to fight them, not as much as other MGS bosses.

Although this new game doesn't even feel in the same universe as the older games. Even MGS4 felt like it was still in the same realm at the previous four games.

You think? It does to me, I have the whole MGS feeling all over this game.

The setting in the trailer does look different, mainly cause it's an open world, but I get nothing but MGS vibes from this.

For sure. There was just so many powerful moments in that game. I haven't been as into a MGS title since then. Hoping that this one will return it to that type of game.
