To be fair, MGS was the first game with real voice acting which could stand up to movies. And he did give Snake character, any actor can make or break a character in any game/movie. And the writing can be quite bad in MetalGear, its just that theres alot true genius in there too.

for those curious he replicates his MGS1 voice at around 59 minute mark

I must say, in this Hayter interview, he seems to be doing a decent Snake voice still. It doesn’t sound as gravely as the MGS4 and PW voice.

I think I just heard him doing his MGS1 voice... :horror he can do it, I'm glad he is willing to come back aswell, I wouldn't expect anything less of him :clap

He likes PW, that's intresting, I think I'll play that game again a finish some missions I never completed

Thats true, but Snake always had two voice actors, and the character is very popular in Japan as well which makes me think the writing and design for Snake is just as important. The man is a legend in the industry no doubt, but I always found him to have a bit of an ego. Most professionals pass their roles on gracefully, something Hayter isn’t doing, it makes it a bit hard for me to sympathize with his removal from the series when he acts like that.

I think I'd be bitter if I created and was the voice of Snake, and they replaced me after 10+ years with someone who wasn't definitely better than I was at the role

I can see why he is upset

He didn't create Snake though. The character Snake existed years before Hayter played him, and those games were great without him. MGS1 was awesome, he was awesome in it, it's
My favorite game of all time, but I would still love that game just as much if I was playing the Japanese version.

Hayter being "better" than Kiefer is subjective, but there are a lot of fans out there who feel his acting and voice wouldn't have fit with what Kojima is trying to create in MGSV.

But he created the voice and portrayed the words on the papers. Snakes voice and personality came out through Hayter, through his performance of kojima's writing.

There's not been that many more iconic VA than Hayter as Snake in the gaming world, really. Solid Snake is voted one of the best video game characters ever created. Hayter is one big part of that creation

That's like saying an actor doesn't make the character they play. You could write something brilliant and with bad casting ruin a great character.

Without the right person to bring out the character, it's wasted and it's pretty obvious Hayters voice for Snake became iconic, and for a good reason. Something Kiefers will never be

It all stands to reason as why he's still probably feeling slightly bitter

Thats true, he did portray the lines written for him very well, but unlike voice actors, actors don’t also have a different actor for different countries. Snake is very popular in Japan also, some people even think the Japanse voice actor does a better job than Hayter, and has much more range, which is why he can voice multiple Snakes in a single game. The character Snake is a legend out in Japan as well, are you telling me thats because of David Hayter? The character is just cool, he has an awesome design, and that sort of 80’s and early 90’s cliche that resonated with most us. I think Kiefer is perfect for what Kojima wants, I think he did a fine job, GZ sold very well, and TPP is a highly anticipated title coming next year, the character Snake is bigger than David Hayter.

I hope Hayter does come back as Solid Snake, but if he doesn’t, I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be excited to get my hands on the MG remakes if they got made.

It’s also unfair to say Kiefer’s voice won’t be Iconic to Big Boss, it very well could be, especially if TPP turns out as good as most of us think it could be. Both Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger’s Jokers are iconic, I don’t see why the same can’t happen with Hayter and Big Boss. Not everything has to be so black and white.

Nah I'm talking strictly for the English speaking countries, were MGS is actually the most popular

Snake is bigger than Hayter, but not his voice, not after over 10 years of doing it, that's all. It wasn't a cool move. It's a pretty unanimous decision all round on that I believe

It's not that I hate kiefers voice for Snake, infact it could be far worse. He wasn't the right choice but he isn't bad either, let's not confuse that with iconic though, it's not the nearly the right tone and it's to Jack Baur overall. Just like Hayter, he already has a defining role. Kiefers voice as Snake just doesn't have the impact to make it iconic

I'll even add I'm not trying to imply Hayters would be 'perfect' for the role for the tone of MGSV either

This is all my opinion of course, just incase I have to throw that out there

Well, of course Hayter is popular as Snake in English speaking countries, because he has no one to compare to in that role, now he does with KS voicing BB.

When Heath Ledger got casted as the Joker is was unanimous at that time that he was a terrible choice, until people saw the film. If you want to talk about unanimous, almost every review said Kiefer did a really good job as Big Boss with the limited amount of voice work he had in GZ. TPP will be his true showcase, but a lot of fans have already warmed up to the transition. Also, he’s not only a voice anymore, he will be bringing Big Boss to life with actual acting.

You might not think it’s a right fit, but most of the reviewers did, and a fair amount of members on here do as well. Time will tell if Kiefer can make Big Boss his own.

Kiefer will do a near perfect Big Boss imho :lecture he shouldn't be judged just by his voice, unlike Hayter, he is doing a full performance

Its a shame David won't play MGSV, I understand why he can't do it, Snake was a big part of his life

It’s also a character that needed to be distinguished, Kiefer can now make him a totally separate character to Solid Snake.

In that regard Kojima succeeded, I can no longer see Snake and BB as the same person, Kiefer brought it's own personality to BB and it fits him like a glove.

Agreed :lecture. And in order to understand the fan sentiments about David Hayter, someone would have to be following the series for years instead of simply watching YouTube playthroughs of MGS from several months ago. But, I won't say more on the matter here :rotfl. Fair weather fans gonna fair weather...

I just can't get used it, and the problem with Kief's voice is that it's too iconic for another character. My parents came over to my place yesterday, and when I was playing GZ to show them (my dad is a big MGS fan as well), my mom asked me, "why does Snake talk like Jack Bauer?" :rotfl.

I guess his voice might sound "fresh" if you've never seen all 191 episodes of 24. For me, I love Kiefer, but only in his movies and 24.

Yup I agree, which is why I think it was smart on Kojima’s part to release GZ before TPP because most of us played that, “demo” so much, by the time TPP comes, all of us will be very familiar with his voice as BB. Even for the people who gave Konami their money after protesting against it but I won’t get into that now :lol

:lol I could never bring myself to watch a single episode.

But I've watched videos, he manages to give a different personality to Bauer and BB.

Side note: It's so freaking cool that your parents are MGS fans :lol awesome.

Well, for me, there are just way too many parallels between Big Boss and Bauer for me to digest well :lol. You should really watch 24 when you get the chance!!! Jack Bauer is the greatest American hero who has ever lived (that is, if he were real). That cannot be stated enough. I'm still trying to convince this guy to watch it:

And thanks! :rotfl. My dad got into the series after he had his copy of MGS 4 signed in 2008. He doesn't play video games, but he watched me play through the series from start to finish. It took him a while to figure out that BB and SS were not the same person, though.

I'll start watching it this spring break, on your recommendation :duff:

It speaks lengths of the franchise that your dad got into the series, older fellows are usually a tougher crowd, my dad rarely says he really likes something, he always says "meh it was ok" :lol cause he can see right through the BS writing, but I bet he would like MGS too, I'll try to get him to like it next time I have a chat with him. :lol
