The Pens obviously have more firepower, but the Flyers just seem to be getting every break and have everything going their way right now. Should be an interesting series.
The only thing I worry about concerning the Pittsburgh Penguins and their competition, the Philadelphia Flyers is depth and toughness. Yes my Penguins have arguably two of the best forwards in the league. Definitely in the center position. Then they have another elite talent in late season pick-up Marian Hossa, but having said that, the Pens don't have the toughness that the Flyers exude. Outside of your Laraques, Gills, and Roberts, and perhaps to a certain extent even your Malones, that Flyers team has plenty more muscle.
I would also give the Flyers the upper hand in terms of scoring depth. When 100 percent healthy they are led by dominate two-way pivot Mike Richards, Simon Gagne, Jeff Carter, Daniel Briere, Mike Knuble, R.J. Umberger, Scott Hartnell, Joffrey Lupul, Scotty Upshall, and Steve Downie. Trust me, Downie is an underrated and unknown scorer to the general public right now, but when this kid logs good minutes one day he'll tear it up. He averaged over 2 points-per-game in the OHL, and close to a PPG average in the AHL before making his way up to the bigs.
Their defence is solid. So our guys are great at getting up in the rush, ala your Gonchars, Whitneys, and Letangs, but what scares me is that those guys aren't exactly great in their own end. Rob Scuderi has done well, and Brooks Orpik is a guy I like. Hal Gill has even surprized. Goaltending is a wash. Martin Biron while as good as he's been this season, is clearly not the dominating goalie when compared to Marc-Andre Fleury. Remember, MA has the best numbers of any goalie in the NHL in the past 25 games, regular season and playoffs combined. He has been solid, and while I am not completely won over yet, he has been holding the forte diligently and successfully. Minus that third period in Game 5 against the Rangers.
In order for my Pens team to beat this Flyers squad, they can't shy down or back off when Philly pushes them. They'll try and dominate them with their physical game. The Pens will have to play every bit as tough. Guys like Crosby, Malkin, and Hossa will have to get a bit dirty... Definitely those three will have to elevate their A game for this series match up as it will be the toughest one they'll be in yet.
On a final note I expect to see some of the smaller depth guys on Pittsburgh like your Staals, Kennedys, Dupuis', and Talbots become unsung hereos. Jordan Staal, you were such a treat as a special teams player last season with an 06/07 NHL best 7 short handed goals. We need to see you light the lamp up on the penalty kill again!
