This is a report from Sky News
Owners of PS3 consoles are tweeting they can't play PS3 Originals and that the Play Station online network is down.

Some users are reporting they cannot load games with "Trophies" or play Premium Themes. Others are reporting their Trophy data and high scores have been wiped.

When they attempt to log-on, gamers are reporting the following error: "8001050F - Hardware failure. Cannot update Firmware or connect to internet".

Some users also claim they are unable to pay games previously downloaded from the network.

8001050F - Hardware failure. Cannot update Firmware or connect to internet

- a crashed Sony PS3
Since offline systems are affected, it is suggested a firmware error could be to blame rather than a network error.

There are rumours it has been caused by a leap-year miscalculation, as the fault emerged overnight as February rolled into March.

Many PS3 owners are reporting their console clocks have reset to December 31, 1999 or January 1, 2000.

If this is the reason, it will be embarrassing for Sony, though they should be able to solve the problem by releasing a 'patch'.

It's not yet clear how many users have been affected. Though with 33 million users worldwide, the number is likely to be significant.

Sony is keeping users updated via Twitter. They advise: "We're narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them. Stay tuned".

but if you can't connect then how can u download the patch?

ps. just been on store and home..everything running ok with fat ps3

I'm not sure if a patch can solve the problem, but if it can, then I guess Sony will have to send out a disc to all owners without Internet.

Latest info on PlayStation Network Status

Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
* Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

They are waiting for the day to pass to see if on March 2nd the problem goes away itself

ohh yeaa !
they are watting for the 24hrs to go by.

they better hope it's fixed or they are going to have some major problems for such a stupid mistake.

Just happened on mine and my brothers while loading heavy rain all trophies gone and game won't load.

It's funny that they're asking everyone not to turn on their PS3s today.

Also, my PS3's clock is always 15 minutes faster than real time. I hope whatever fix they implement resolves that issue.

Guess I can't watch any movies tonight. :tap

Just read this. Mine was fine last night about 21:45 UK time. Just switched it on to see if mine is ok as it is a 1st gen US model. The clock and date are all wrong and can not play any games even though I have not attempted to sign in. Also most of my trophies have gone. Luckily I got the the main menu of MW2 before it shut down, and all the completion percentages of spec ops, campaign and online are still the same.

Hopefully it will be a simple download of 3.16 to my PC in a day or two to fix it.

if yours isnt affected yet, I would hope you could disconnect your internet, turn on your PS3 and change the settings and then turn it on offline and watch your movies

I don't think everyone has to worry too much. This problem should be painlessly patched soon. It's possible that they're also waiting for it to 'fix' itself once today is over so just wait for any news that develops.

PS3 will be fine.

but if you can't connect then how can u download the patch?

You can download latest firmware for the PS3 and PSP from Sony's home site. Just put it on a thumb drive or burn it on a DVD. However, I'm not sure how this'll work for the non- technically abled people out there. (ie, my parents and grandparents)
